I’m deathly allergic to bee stings, as in it can kill me in minutes. That said, my husband is a beekeeper and we have 13 hives. I have learned that the girls are busy and not interested in stinging me unless I’m in the hive taking honey. Also, sometimes there is a guard bee having a bad day and she lets me know I’m not welcome to get too close. I respect her warnings and move away. I don’t work the hives and I don’t get too close, but I’m not afraid to have them around. They are busy and docile overall. I love our bees and respect them.

Thank you for this information, as a newbie in homesteader. Bee keeping is on the list for raising animals, (chickens and goats the other two), this bees for pollinators for the garden.

This was an awesome Pantry Chat! Thanks so much to both of you for this timely conversation. I just joined my local bee club, but know I want to keep them feeder and chemical free, so this information is perfect. Keep up the great work. Much love from the Midwest US 💖

We just installed a NUC from the Langstroth into a Layens. We found a way to use a few boards to attach the frame to adapt to the Layens. They didn't seem to mind the two screws and adjusted quickly. So fun watching them fly in and out throughout the day! Thank you for the School of Trad Skills class on bee keeping!

My research lead me to Layens hives when I started in 2020. I have built 20 hives from 6 frame to 22 frame insulated. There are a lot of Layens hives in the USA now. Enjoy.

Just got 2 hives from my cousin who is elderly and retiring from Beekeeping. He has fed them sugar water I’m not sure if I want to continue that process! We couldn’t find a queen in 1 so we combined the 2 into one it is very strong hive! Looking forward to this episode!

Beekeeping starts in August getting the colony prepared for winter. Part of my operation is queen rearing to be sustainable. The bees are the only thing that has ever improved my general health, the reason for keeping the bees beyond all the pollinators for crops.. Insulated hives are super strong in the spring, worth the investment for a homestead.

the old saying goes We do not keep bees, bees keep us certainly is true. Back in the day just about every home had a hive. 10 hive count here.

My father had 4 horizontal hives and never had any equipment. No smoke either. Open the hive carefully and slowly. Smoke puts them in panic made and they can start ingesting honey to flee. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast with bees. But I wore the hat when I helped.

AMEN to your comment about keeping bees without sugar water, etc. Bees have been surviving for many more years than us humans...lets learn from them so they can continue their many gifts to us

If you’re building horizontal boxes, couldn’t you turn the Langstroth frame sideways so that it’s longer side is vertical?

I've tried the horizontal hive, and it failed in WI 2 winters in a row. I did use lang frames and will try again with Lay frames this year.

Who is this guest speaker? I think I missed that. Where in middle TN? I’m in that area and interested in starting a couple hives and making local connections.

I am a would be bee keeper, but because of my disabilities I thought a Switzerland bee house would be the best for me do you have any knowledge about this

I am in the process of taking his class at school of traditional skills and I can tell you that he advocates for Layens Style Horizontal hives. The Swiss Bee house is still a vertical style hive just that are housed in a shed. I don't know what your disability might be, but based on what I have learned in the class so far, I would say that I think the Layens horizontal hive set up would be even better for someone with a disability as you don't have to be able to lift more than one frame at a time. I highly recommend taking the class.
