Hi Tim, I'm absolutely loving my new De-Googled GrapheneOS phone and your video was super informative as to some apps that I could download. Have you ever checked out a Matrix or XMPP client before? I've heard mixed messages regarding Telegram and Signal (albeit better than WhatsApp for privacy), but have heard wonders regarding XMPP. I'm a bit of a noob to the alternative tech world, as throughout my undergraduate engineering education we didn't use anything that didn't have Microsoft/Google associated with it somehow. (Edit "Microsoft/Google") Great videos! Looking forward to learning more :) -Dylan

I haven't used Matrix at all and XMPP very little. While they have their place, Session is likely the best from a privacy perspective as it uses onion routing, and is decentralized.

Session is more "polished" than XMPP, so it is easier for new users to figure it out, and that makes it easier for non-techies to use it. After all, you need people to communicate with on the various messengers.

Flashed ROMs for years and used lineageos too but there was always issues. Been using an s10 since it came out n with its forever locked bootloader, I gave up modding ROMs and made do. Been away from the modding scene and only just found out that grapheneos is now stable. Ordered a pixel 5 off evilbay and flashed her. They've done a brilliant job over at grapheneos. Its as much privacy as we're gonna get while connected but having Google almost completely wiped and 99% of apps working, is brilliant. With more updates to come, grapheme can only get better.

I was skeptical at first because it sounded like it might break more apps than Lineage and be too limiting, but GrapheneOS is definitely the way. I also installed it on a Pixel 5 and am extremely impressed with it. It's good that LineageOS is around for other devices besides Pixel phones, but if you have a Pixel then I'd say go with GrapheneOS if you want the best privacy and experience.

Coming from S10. Is the Pixel 5 where it's at? Or should we be looking at a different pixel 6 7, etc? Or a different phone altogether? Graphene, OS in mind.. Any firsthand experience that you could share would be terrific! Don't know much about pixel phones is there like a 5 and a 5 plus? Obviously want maximum ability for siloing! Like day-to-day stuff in comparison to S10 operating system interactions, Etc is just daily use for a daily driver. 😊 thx!

Good morning sir. “Here we go maps” sends data to google analytics, right? Organic Maps is a better option for privacy? Or do you recommend something else? Have a great holiday & thnx for all you do to educate on this topic.

Use Here We Go to download offline maps and then block network access to Here We Go and it won't send anything to anyone yet works well with high quality maps.

MyQ app does not work at all. I need that for my garage door openers. On the entertainment side Vudu, now Fandango at home does not work either.

Once Briar starts using Lokinet for its communication instead of Tor they can add calls to it. Calls won't work over Tor, but would work great over the Low Latency Anonymous Routing Protocol (LLARP) based Lokinet. Once the Oxen/Session/Lokinet Team gets LibLokinet ready, then Briar can use it, too!

Nothing is quite like Google Maps, not even Apple maps, but if you are fine using a proprietary product then Here We Go works very well.

@@hansj2355 Here We Go has offline maps of pretty much the entire world. You can download them to your device and use the navigator in airplane mode for added privacy

@@privacyproshop K9 used to be a good alternative, but has too many unfixed problems and never really kept up to date, so most users dumped it which is really sad as I used it on KitKat!

@@privacyproshop have tried K9 recently but a lot of people have reported that certain free email account providers such as yahoo simply cannot be set/installed under K9. Have tried yahoo myself and after 4 days of trying I've simply gave up on it. Have used Blue Mail apk for years on my older android phones but cannot say if is a safe app or not since I wasn't aware of apps spying on your data until recently and because of it, a few months back I decided to throw away all my old phones and have quicky purchased a brand new Pixel 8 and put Graphene OS on it from day 1. No regrets. What a great OS.

Good day sir. Thank you for your educational videos. Made the switch to Graphene - but can't get Open Maps to lock onto position. Same problem with Open Weather - neither app can "find" my location. Have gone thru and given permission(s) to allow while using the app, tried everything. Any suggestions?

Why aegis when you can do TOTP inside of keepassxc and bitwarden password managers? Why an extra separate app?

Convenience. Aegis is, in my opinion, more convenient for TOTP than KeePassDX. Also, KeePassDX says this about security: "It is not recommended to store this secret key and the password of the same service in the same KeePass database. (It would be like having a door with 2 locks but putting the 2 keys on the same keychain.)"

You would have to add Google services and google pay if you want google pay. You can do that in a sandbox with GrapheneOS and it might work, but doing that kinda re-googles the phone as you will be giving info to Google about your purchases. It likely requires login to a Google account, which allows Google to track you. As far as what to use as an alternative? Use cash as much as you can. Or those Visa or MasterCard gift cards.

Open source mapping apps aren't nearly as complete or polished as Google Maps. If you must have good maps and you don't mind a proprietary app, Here We Go in Aurora Store is close to Google Maps.

A few things concern me about Fair Email. One is having to buy it from Google, which attaches your Google ID and uniquely identifies each App to a user. The other is App Permissions. Reading contacts is NOT OK, neither is FIND ACCOUNTS ON THE DEVICE. There is nothing about what "use fingerprint hardware" really means, is that just use the phone to unlock the program, or share the fingerprint data and store it elsewhere. The same for using biometric hardware. Then I have an issue with preventing the phone from sleeping and ignoring battery optimisation. Reading the contents of your shared storage needs to be defined more, it should only be for the upload or download of files by a user and from the program if required, there should be no access to anything else. View network connections, needs to be defined more, a list of what the phone can see and uses is NOT required by the developer unless location data is being passed to a third party. As with so many of these privacy programs, they are often not very private and do track most of what you do. I would give this one a miss unless you can audit the data leaving the phone and see what is being accessed and sent out.

You don''t have to buy Fair Email from Google. You don't even have to buy it at all unless you wish to support the project. They allow direct payment with crypto and other methods

Molly is operating at the mercy of Signal. They tolerate Molly but can block it if they want. F-Droid will not distribute Signal or any other Signal clients. See this for more info on the topic: forum.f-droid.org/t/signal-on-f-droid/13742/24

I feel like you spoke about "HERE WeGo" maps and how to add voice direction to it but can't find the video in which you talk about it. Are my memories wrong? Yes. install the app called "RHvoice" from F-Droid to get voice directions to work.

Sort of - you could go to Settings/Accessibility/Color and motion/Color correction. Turn on "Use color correction", then choose "Grayscale" from the list. It makes everything on the screen to shades of gray, including icons. You might want to also enable "Color correction shortcut" which allows instant changes between color and grayscale.

What do you think of BitWarden instead of KeePass?

I haven't used Bitwarden, but have heard and read good things about it. As I understand it, the cool thing about it is Bitwarden server that can be either self hosted or hosted by Bitwarden in the cloud and therefore you can synchronize your passwords across desktops & mobile devices. So far KeePass has done everything I need and I simply copy the file using Syncthing between my GrapheneOS device and my desktop.

Bitwarden is brilliant, I have used it for years and now use the paid version... It can be accessed via the web interface or locally on a phone or computer. One thing I would say NOT to do on Windows is use the browser extension and do not store passwords in any browser. Have the Bitwarden program running and just cut and paste easily in to sites. The paid version adds things like the ability to store attachments against entries, so you could attach a picture of your bank card if you really wanted, or maybe a copy of your last bank statement. I use it to keep receipts and documents for car breakdown cover for example, also car insurance. There is even a OTP feature, but I would avoid keeping this with your passwords in case the phone or computer ever got compromised. I used to run Authy, which was brilliant, but had privacy concerns as it was always sending data out about where I was, contacts, what my phone was doing etc, I never kept it long enough to run Wireshark on Win11. I use AEGIS AUTHENTICATOR for site codes. I back up the encrypted database to a USB stick and a ProtonDrive. KeePass is quite basic, but if you are more paranoid, you could use it knowing it would not connect to the Internet, then you only need to secure it on your device.

@@CodeOnBlocks NewPipe has to be updated each time youTUBE finds a way to block the way it works, it's not worth the trouble. On a phone I use youtube on Brave! Then I can still log in and comment if I need to. I also use Mullvad DNS over TLS.
