Pan Pastels are actually the cheaper option in the long run 😊 You can buy the basic set of 5 colours (red, yellow, blue, black and white) and mix any colour you need, just like paint! That is something you can't do easily with soft pastel sticks or pastel pencils (this is why people usually have hundreds of pastel sticks/pencils - which is way more expensive than buying 5 Pan Pastels) They're actually not that expensive when you compare how much pastel is in each pan Pan Pastels contain 40% more pastel than an average stick and have 4-5 times more coverage. They last a very long time in comparison to sticks I've had my full set of pan pastels for about 5 years and haven't run out of any colour yet, and I do a lot of artwork, and if you take care of the Sofft tools, they last a long time as well 😊 There are also many other benefits such as not having to touch the pastel (so it's less mess on your hands/artwork/desk etc), less excess dust in the air, as well as being able to control how much pastel you are applying to your surface which means you don't fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly - allowing for the addition of a few layers of pastel pencils/coloured pencils etc if you wish! You can also use the smaller Sofft tools or brushes to apply into smaller areas, which can be hard to to with a soft pastel stick I honestly recommend Pan Pastels over any other type of pastel because they are actually more cost effective (along with all the other benefits mentioned above) 😊

I bought the 10 primary set and is definitely not easy to mix the colors of the Pan pastels. I even got the blender. Maybe it's the paper you use, but definitely not easy. Also some colors are too transparent, such as the yellow.​So panpastels are good just as a base but definitely not worth it in my opinion.@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt

I blend on a separate piece of printer paper sometimes, then transfer the colour from that paper to my working surface, but most of the time, I just pick up a little bit of each colour from different pans, and apply it straight onto my Pastelmat (the only paper I recommend for pastel artwork). The colours blend together onto your paper as you work - I blend this way for every piece of pastel art that I create and have never had a problem blending numerous colours together! yesterday I shopped online and ordered a bunch of pastelsupplies which were on sale, i.e. pastelmat paper in different sizes and some panpastel-sofft-tools so I can use it more. pastelmat paper is the best paper indeed. it may be pricier but the results are worth it. I tried some canson mi-teintes paper but pastelmat is on a whole other level. thank you for supporting my love in pastel, kirsty :D Edit: For Blending you can use a color-shaper tool. it can have different tips of a mid-soft/hard rubber-material. the lovely colin bradley use this mostly, I use it sometimes, too :)

That's exciting! It is more expensive but there is nothing else like it, unfortunately! I actually purchased some of those because of Colin Bradley for that reason, but I still find cotton tips work for me 😊 The colour shapers are good for really tiny areas though!

For oil pastels, I am only interested in the water soluble ones, like Lyra rembrandt and neocolor 2. But for soft pastels, I am planning to get at least one professional pencil set, one studant grade pencil set, one small professional pastel Block set and one student grade one. Not into pan pastels for now, as I am a bit alergic to powder (will need gloves to work, but it's worth it). I need to save some money 😅🤣. Very nice video!!

Is there an alternative to those pastel mat papers? They are so so expensive and I cant afford them for practice. I am a complete beginner. How does the Acrylic pastel ground work on some watercolor paper? anything else paperwise you recommend?

Unfortunately, I have never come across any other paper that comes close to Pastelmat because it is a unique surface that is made with cellulose plant fibres, whereas most other pastel papers are sanded papers or cotton-based The paper makes a huge difference with pastels and you just won't be able to achieve the same results on other papers! Every other paper I have tried either produces a grainy-looking end result, the pastel doesn't "stick" to the paper so there is a lot of dust fall-off and/or it doesn't take enough layers of pastel When it comes to pastels, the only supply that I 100% recommend you purchase is Pastelmat. All of the other supplies (brand of pastels, blenders, pastel pencils etc) can be swapped to cheaper alternatives if you wish, but definitely not the paper as you just won't be able to achieve the same results If you are on a budget, I would still choose Pastelmat and maybe get a smaller set of pastels (you can blend them to make other colours) until you can afford to add more pastels to your set over time Although Pastelmat is a little more expensive than other papers, it's 100% worth it in my opinion 😊 If you compare it to the cost of purchasing a decent canvas for oil/acrylic for example, it is actually quite reasonable for the results you get with it

You're welcome 😊 I have these drawers from an Australian company called Officeworks kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJjWhmyrYqaAfZo But a lot of people in other countries are able to get wooden pastel drawers for a reasonable price when they're on sale instead! I wouldn't recommend storing them in a pencil case because they will move around too much and may cause breakage issues (pastel pencils are very soft)

Does Pan Pastel generate less pastel powder than soft pastels in sticks? I work in my bedroom and soft pastels are just not a good idea for me unfortunately - but they are amazing for backgrounds!

Yes, definitely! There is barely any dust fall off if you work with Pan Pastels and pastel pencils on Clairefontaine Pastelmat - the paper also makes a huge difference because it really grips the pastel 😊 I also tell people to tape their drawing to a drawing board that they can move around then take it to a bin to tap off the excess dust when needed (instead of blowing dust around the room)

You can definitely do that with soft pastels - I'm not too sure about acrylic paint but you could try it and see what happens! I think if there was a lot of charcoal on the canvas, the paint may not adhere to where the charcoal is, but again, I'm not sure as I've never done that! I know a lot of people use transfer paper to get there outline down under acrylic paintings so maybe look into that instead 😊

I am a total beginner at drawing with pastels of any type. I purchased the Susan Garden set of 10-pan pastels. The colors in that set are Diarylide Yellow, BT. Yellow Green, Orange, Permanent Red, Permanent Red Tint, Red Iron Oxide, Violet, Magenta, Titanium White, and Black. I have a few questions about the pan-pastels medium. What colors do I need to add to this collection to be able to mix any color? What are the different types of colors like Painting, Tint, and Shade used for? Are the different types of colors only used for blending from light to dark or mixing? What is a colorless blender and how is it used? Do you need a different sponge for every color or can they be washed in between colors? Can you use any of the pastel mediums in coloring books? There are different types of paper used in coloring books like Createspace (Amazon) paper which is extremely thin, toothy, and rough, card stock, watercolor, or the perfect thick high-quality paper with good tooth. Hi there, To mix any colour you like, it's good to start with the basic 5 colours (Hansa Yellow, Permanent Red, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, and Black) You can add other colours over time depending on which colours you feel like you are mixing more often etc (I would suggest a few neutral colours like browns, greens etc depending on the subject matter you like) I actually created a set of Pans with Pan Pastel which contains all the colours I recommend to create a variety of subjects, so you can always take a look at the list of colours and buy the individual colours you are missing (you don't need to buy the set because you will probably have overlap colours) www.kirstyrebeccafineart.com/new-panpastel-set Every colour has a tint, a shade, and an extra dark shade... for example if you take Hansa Yellow, there will be; Hansa Yellow Tint (which is just Hansa Yellow mixed with white) Hansa Yellow Hansa Yellow Shade (Hansa Yellow mixed with black) Hansa Yellow Ex Dark (Hansa Yellow mixed with more black) So if you have any of the base colours (which are any of the colours that don't have "tint" or "shade" next to the name) then you can create your own tints and shades using your black and white You can use the same sponge between colours - just wipe on a microfibre cloth in between (the sponge will look stained, but most of the colour will come off) - I generally use a clean sponge if I want a pure white though because it's hard to completely remove all colours from the sponge In terms of paper, it depends what you want to achieve! If you are aiming for similar results to my own artwork, then I only recommend using Clairefontaine Pastelmat because it is a unique surface and nothing else compares to it. I haven't found another paper that can achieve the same amount of layers but also create a soft end result (without graininess) You can technically use Pans on any paper, depending on what you want to achieve. I suspect colourinng book paper won't have enough tooth to allow multiple layers and it won't grip the pastel very well which means you will probably only be able to do one layer and it will definitely smudge onto the page next to it when you shut the book (I don't have much experience with colouring books, but I would recommend higher quality coloured pencils instead of Pan Pastels for those because they won't smudge) This tutorial is a beginner's Pan Pastel tutorial and I explain everything you need to know in a lot more depth kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJe4naeDjbV9rrM Hope that helps 😊

I got a set of pastels from an art class. I found they smudged a lot. Those pencils look so nice. Do you have to protect your drawings using them? And how do you do it? I'm in Calgary, Canada. I noticed a local Michael's had the pan pastels. Only 6-8 in the set.

Different types of pastels can smudge more than others (and it also depends on the paper you are using!) The only paper I recommend is Cairefontaine Pastelmat, and if you use Pan Pastels and pastel pencils in combination with that, there really isn't that much dust fall off/smudging Unfortunately, most fixatives cause more problems than they solve! Your artwork can end up being darkened/discoloured or the fixative doesn't actually "fix" anything Most pastel artists don't use fixatives for that reason If you use the techniques and supplies that I use, there's no reason you need to fix your pastel paintings because there's very little dust fall off, it's archival/lightfast without it, and if you store it correctly and/or frame it properly then you won't have any issues 😊 If your local art store stocks small sets of Pans, you can ask them to order larger sets as well! Otherwise there's a list of about 10 online stores that sell Pan Pastels in Canada here panpastel.com/online-retailers.html

I honestly have no idea (I have never worked with polymer clay) but if Pan Pastel is working for you, then I assume Faber Castell Pitt Pastel pencils or Stabilo Carbothello pastel pencil would also work because they are soft (chalk) pastels like Pan Pastels are - I'm not sure if that helps, but maybe it's best to ask someone who works with polymer clay 😊

Arteza are interesting because they claim that their supplies are lightfast, but I have yet to see proof that they used either of the two recognised methods. ASTM or Bluewool are the only two that most artists trust, so I don't trust that their supplies are actually lightfast until they provide proof Which basically means that a lot of "Fine Artists" won't use their products because they may discolour/fade quickly over time which is not ideal if you are selling your artwork So the short answer is no, I haven't tried their pastels and probably won't haha 😊

I haven't used them because it's very hard to get single pastel sticks! I have used the Conte sticks before which are great and I believe they are similar to those 😊

I wouldn't suggest it because charcoal is quite soft and crumbles easily so it can make the blades of your sharpener blunt, quite quickly which will make your pencils break often... I recommend learning to use a blade/knife to sharpen charcoal or pastel pencils, or sometimes I use a cheap handheld sharpener for charcoal (but keep in mind you will probably need to replace it regularly as it will go blunt quickly) 😊

I have so many different papers that I am going to test them all with the Pan Pastels, including Mixed Media. I'll still get PastelMat to use as well. I've been working in graphite, charcoal, and ink with white gouache recently.

Unfortunately, they are not the same as Sofft tools! These tools pick up the pastel from the pans and lay them down much better than makeup tools do because they are made from a different kind of material (even though they look similar) Some people use makeup sponges and brushes to apply Pan Pastel but they achieve a different result It also depends on the paper you are using because the makeup tools may work better on smooth papers, however, you can't get as many layers of pastel on smooth papers as you do on Pastelmat (which is the surface I choose) So basically, it depends on the materials you are working with and what result you are after, so makeup sponges don't work with my techniques, but there is no harm in trying them yourself :)

I know 😊 To tell you the truth, I used to keep all of my tins/boxes that the full sets came in for years, even though they were empty because I couldn't bring myself to throw them out! But it is a lot more functional to have all of my pencils within reach in one place now 😊

Yes you can use coloured pencil over Pan Pastel if you apply the Pans lightly - also providing you have the right paper choice (I use the Luxarchival Sanded Paper for this combination) You can also apply pans on top of watercolour as well 😊

I'd suggest the 20 set of the Pure/Painting colours :) You can mix the entire set of Pan Pastel colours using those base colours mixed with black or white, so you won't be missing any colours that you may need (for any subject!)

Some people join different artists each month (you can always cancel and rejoin at any time) so they can try out different artists teaching/techniques but only pay for one subscription each month. The other was someone who does more wildlife and I have never drawn animals or used pastel so thought I would go for that. I don't need help with graphite. Anyway I've found your pan pastel set on amazon and I'm going to buy that and sign up for yours next month. I have previously spent hundreds on polychromos and then realised I hate colour pencils. Too boring and monotonous for me. I think I can do well with pastel but we shall see. I jist feel like if I'm expanding into animals they can really benefit from colour

Honestly, I always recommend getting this paper and saving money on your other supplies (smaller sets of pastels etc) because you will not get the same results - there is no other paper like it! You won't be able to get the layers necessary or the smoothness with any other paper on the market 😊 So yes, even if you are a beginner, save your money by purchasing smaller sets of pastels and get the paper that will achieve the results you are looking for If you were a beginner in coloured pencil, graphite, charcoal, watercolour, acrylic (or any other medium) there are definitely cheaper surfaces you can choose from... but for pastels, I only recommend Clairefontaine Pastelmat if you want to achieve similar results to what I create in my tutorials 😊

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt yeah, it is a way to see it. But I like for example like to test my art supplies a little bit by swatching, trying to blend a bit, maybe layer. This with the knowledge that there is better paper with which I will get better results. I hab some clear gesso and primed some mm paper and it worked out great for that. I am always hesitant to use expensive paper for testing and sketching and always use it for the 'real' piece that is more than a sketch.
