Buy cheap the first time but buy the biggest set you can find. When things break or wear out, replace with the high end version. You're left with the tools you use the most being the best, but if you need something for a job you rarely do, chances are you'll have it. Best bit is you'll spend far less in the long run
@nomad-pq4yw8iy7v2 ай бұрын
That works sometimes but, other times the cheap will do damage not just break or wear out. So just be aware of that. No you don't need to buy all high end tools.

Until your cheap tool strips the thread on a suspension linkage bolt or something and it costs you 20x more replacing parts your tools have fucked up yeah...

Pretty solid list. Spoke key is a must as is Chain whip/cassette removal tool are a must. Can’t replace most rear spokes without pulling the cassette. Also you can remove your dork disk while you’re at it.

I have more tools than most bike shops, my favorites are my Bicycle Reseach nipple driver from 1980, Branson ultrasonic rig and DT Tensio 2. I would add those to a wish list. 👍🏻

I agree, buy quality tools, you have them for life. They work better, built better and last sooo much longer.
@andyarchitect2 ай бұрын
A good quality multitool such as the Topeak Hexus X is probably the first tool to get as it will do 80% of the jobs on your bike. Then follow it up with whatever is needed for maintenance tasks as they come up. Buy good tools if you think you will use them frequently, otherwise get something mid priced for occasional use. Avoid cheap tools that may end up harming your bike and costing you more than you saved.

GMBN Tool Club! 😁 This could be a cross discipline GCN channel! I'd sign up! 😁👍 I'm sure I go out to break my bikes, subconsciously, just so I can fix them! Can't beat a day on the tools with the bike hooked up to the stand! Great film Owen, I'm always amazed just how many seasoned riders, regardless of type of bike don't fix their own bikes! I couldn't imagine having someone else tighten the nuts and bolts on my bike before I go flying down a hill! My favourite tool? FSA threaded Bottom bracket removal tool(s)!!!

I do some work on my own car also. So I did have some tools, before I bought my E-Bike. But my favorite bike-specific tool must be "Topeak RATCHET ROCKET LITE NTX+". It have saved me 1 time this year, on one of my E-bike trips. Broken chain🙂

Cable stretcher tool is a game changer if you have brakes or derailleur(s) using cables. Park's is the BT-2, but there are cheaper knockoffs available too.

PSST........ little secret 'good tools are the cheaper ones in the long run. Sometimes even in the short term. Park is a great source as well as others brands including some that aren't bike specific. MY favorite tool is the right tool another words the one that made for job and not just something your using to get by!

An amateur’s tools IMHO should be primarily aligned with those consumable components: levers for the tubes, chain breaker for the chain, lock ring and chain whip for the cassette etc. Major rebuilds may require a trip to the bike shop. 😌

Great idea! And tools aren't actually an n+1 scenario. Well, sometimes of course as new tools emerge for new components, but your quality tools will last you a while so there's no need to replace for no reason

1:38 and, if you want to change a Shimano 135mm TX/MT Freehub: an 11mm _or_ a 12mm Hex 😂 Shimano won't let you know beforehand - they only say "use Hex wrench" in the manual 😂 and, when you're really, really lucky - the _very same_ part may come with either 11 or 12 😂 Why? because they don't care. They want you to buy a new hub - or, ideally a new wheel. Tough time finding an 11mm Hex? It's acutally easier to grind down a 12mm with a file.
