You are an excellent teacher. Your tip on taking a kayak for a test spin before choosing the equipment to attach is so important. Thank you!

Great video!! Save some money on the anchor pole by shopping at Lowes/Home Depot for an 8ft grape stake and top it off with a PVC pipe tee as the handle. Probably cost your $10 or less; compared to the ridiculous $$$ they charge for a manufactured one. Also, if you don't have an anchor trolley setup, I usually stake the pole in the scupper hole in front or behind me. Whatever is out of the way for the direction I'm fishing in.

careful with using the scupper hole as a way to hold you in place it will eventually lead to cracks in the hull

Nice set up man. Personally I’m a Hobie Outback guy but i get a lot of my DIY ideas from all different kinds of rigs like this.

Thanks Tony , I just got my yak and I'm installing a motor on it , the anchor pin is better than an anchor thanks .

I used an old grandfather clock weight for an anchor. Tapped a hole for a screw eye and tie on a line. It won’t hold in heavy current. It’s 5 pounds. I also got an old curtain rod that fit through the scupper holes for a stake out post. It’ll rot quickly but resale shops have lots.

Hey Tony great video... Where can I purchase the same model kayak you have?
@andyperryman47467 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony great video, I wonder if you ever find yourself wishing or needing you had a pedal kayak? I know there are pros and cons to both. Have you ever been in a inshore current where you needed the extra grunt of pedal power? I am thinking of the new wilderness Radar so I can upgrade to pedal later if I wish. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Great Video. Considering a native ultimate though for fishing the flats, would you suggest I find something else since they don't have those scupper holes, or do you think it's a viable option?
@tonyacevedo31498 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Chris! The Native Ultimate is a great kayak to fish from. It is very roomy. I would just suggest keeping a sponge or manual bilge with you in case you get any excess water inside. Don't let one thing keep you from choosing a kayak if the pros outweigh the cons.

Awesome recommendations. Quick question. I'm caught between purchasing a kayak like the prowler you have and something sleeker and faster. I know standing up is definitely an advantage but being able to cover more water in a faster kayak can get me to more spots. Is the prowler fast for it's size? What's your normal range on a day of fishing with the Prowler. I have a catch 120 and I really like the kayak but it's wide and not very fast. I'm finding that my range is about 2 miles, with fishing and casing an area. I'm looking at the next kayak and I like the Prowler but not sure of the range and speed. Is there such a thing as a wide, fast, kayak in the $1200 range?
@tonyacevedo31498 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Paul! The Catch 120 is a bath tub not gonna lie. If you're looking for something faster but stable enough to stand in take a look at the Ocean Kayak Trident series. They are very similar to the Prowler Big Game II that I have but a bit more narrower (I'm not disappointed with my prowler though, its traveled many many miles). I highly recommend trying out whichever kayak might interest you before purchasing. Most local kayak shops have demo days or will arrange a time for you to try out one that you like. When purchasing from chain stores (dicks, academy, bass pro, etc.) you don't have the ability to test them out.

More good insight. Am I assuming correctly that this is an OK Big Game model? If so, what length paddle do you use? I have a narrower kayak now but am considering this model. Thanks so much.

Great video Tony!! I'm in the market and eye balling the FeelFree Lure 13.5. Have you tried these?
@tonyacevedo31498 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gene! I have not personally tried the Lure 13.5. However I have had an experience with the Field and Stream Shadow Caster which is made by the same company and is almost identical to the Lure. It paddled like a raft made of logs but was super stable and had a lot of leg room and space on the floor in front of you which was nice. Definitely try a kayak out before you buy it if possible!

Hey tony, Question about your stake out pole. First, about half way down the pole there seems to be some type of stop to not allow the rope/leash from coming off, what exactly is that. And my second question is what type is the said leash. Thanks so much.
@mike333h8 жыл бұрын
I'm curious as to your leash set up on the stake out pole? What is your depth setter and leash
@tonyacevedo31498 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, I just use a 4ft rope attached to the anchor trolley. Gives me a nice quick stop. The rope should be loose on the anchor pin so that it slides and it will sit at water level. If it is too high and attached at the top it will pull the anchor pin over. To keep the rope from falling off the anchor pin, I have a rubber stopper on the pin itself to keep the rope from sliding off when I am not anchored,

I know this is quite a while ago, but why would one use the scupper plugs? I have a Pelican 120 NXT on the way... very excited to get on the water (lake action here in AZ). I have all the other gear, but the anchor or anchors.
@fornwith44117 жыл бұрын
Patrick Connors Scupper plugs let water out and not in. They have a lip that you can open to let the water out.

Good info, people watch these people who load their boats with everything but their kitchen sink. A good tip though would to talk about maybe some equipment that may need in emergency situation, first aid equipment, some form of lighting if you get caught after dark.

I'm looking to buy my first kayak and as of right now academy has the Heritage Angler 12 feet for $399.00 with free shipping. Does anyone knows if that's a good deal or that it's just a normal price? That's the most I can afford now and I don't want a sit in kayak.
@collinbrister80367 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert! The heritage angler isn’t a bad kayak and will get you on the water. I had one a few years back and bought mine for that price!

didnt even mentiom how important a rudder system is for tracking straight or paddling in current. and another i have a skinny kayak its much faster than a wider more stable kayak cause i paddle up to 6 miles so faster kayak is important
@ramboassgoblin8 жыл бұрын
nathan butler i agrre for me a little faster is better, i use a 29 which is plenty stable yet twice as fast as a 33
@nathanbutler82408 жыл бұрын
Required Shrimp lol i have cheapo pelican kayak 12ft does anything i want. the only benefit to getting a wide yak is to stand but mine is twice as fast and actually more stable in waves since its skinny and fast i can surf it if i want iv been in 6ft breakers and 9ft swells and it trucks right threw em its a little scary but it trucks right along lol
@ramboassgoblin8 жыл бұрын
nathan butler I've never experienced weather like that but in the spring and summer time dumb drunk teens like passing you by in their parents 30ft boats going full throttle and in the process making a 8ft to 10ft wake that I need to cutt through. Luckily I've never capsized but it might happen, I know for sure that with a wider yak it would've been a whole different story.
@nathanbutler82408 жыл бұрын
Required Shrimp yeah one of my favorite spots i fish is an island and it has a shipping channel right on the other side so cargo ships throw 6ft waves at you youre fiahing and all you hear is it roaring behind you lol but when i go to the beach if its flat i fish if its ruff i surf the yak

Is a 3meter kayak big enough for I shore ? Thanks
@Saltstrong2 жыл бұрын
Its less about length and more about stability. But most kayaks that length should be okay.
