I am from Brackenfell in South Africa. I have a BMW 523i E39 1998 model. It starts immediatly when it is cold as well as when at operating temperature. It does however not start in between. Otherwise it runs 100%. What could be the problem?

Recently fell for the $35 Amazon MAF. Had p0101 code. 3 starts, check engine light went off. That lasted three days and that car suddenly died, wouldn't start, barely run. Unplugged it and drove away. Looked inside the MAF and the sensor was bent and not centered... 12 month warranty, I'm trying the second one tomorrow, it's straight this time.

Xcelent run down Nathan, Thanks. I'm having that problem right now! And I've gotta hurry its starting to get HOT here in Arizona.. So i narrowed it down to 3 culprits, weak and unlevel fuel pump and need to replace seal cuz I smell gas, i.e.> tank must be pressurized. And I got to replace fuel filter, it has black sand in it. Plus my fuel rail is having a fast leak-down. Lastly I must check my idler control valve,...... Thanks again Nathan

Do you have any experience with rebuilt E39 engines that have the oversized Time-serts (M10 x 15 x 24.5mm) for the head bolts? I had that done since the new engines are not available and used are unreliable I am told. Seem good (no measureable oil loss/leak/consumption) after 11,000 miles.

Hard to find parts Oem, I did go Chinese on intake boots 😞 and CCV but luckily no driving problems for. Ayear so hopefully I’m in the clear. 125k hopefully I don’t have to change sensors for a while. The best note is the blister thing.

Good advice when I take my e46 out next spring going to follow your advice and check and replace a lot of the hoses etc that you are talking about. Can you get away with just cleaning the ICV or do they need to be replaced if they are a problem. Thanks

Hi hope you can help.... my e36 m52b single vanos 1998 starts runs for about 15 minutes then hiccups and then loses power and goes into a reduced power mode.... after stopping for 30 minutes or so the car starts normally and runs for another 15 or so minutes and then the stalling and loss of power kicks in again.... I replaced the maf sensor but no change.... the cam sensor is only about 50k kilometres old or 30k miles.... I'm from Australia by the way..... fuel pump is a Fuel Miser about the same age as the cam sensor and is making the right noises on start up.... any advice will be appreciated..... thanks for your time..... vids are illuminating..... great effort.....

Great video man. Thanks for the information. I have a challenge where my E39 with the -6 where after driving for a couple an hour or 2 the car will misfire and sometimes die. No codes present at that time. It makes me believe its the fuel pump however after seeing this video I wonder if my Cam/Crank sensor is having an issue. Should would like to fix it so I can rely on longer distance driving

Hello Nathans, I have the next problem with my e46 316i : I was driving the car and suddenly the engine was running very badly ( like it wasen't enough fuel coming to the engine) and at the first stop light, the engine died. Since than, the engine is not cranking anymore and also, when I turn the key on the 2nd position into ignition, the fuel pump doesn't engage ( I Don't hear the fuel pump working). I replaced the battery with a new one and it's the same. When I try to start de engine, the starter makes only click click click… Can you please help me with some ideas? Why my car doesn't get power at the starter and at the fuel pump? May a bad starter cut the power to the fuel pump also? Thank you for any advice.

Thanks for ALL your great videos Nathan. You da man!!! I've been chasing a rough idle at cold start for a couple of years now. No CEL or codes. It idles up and down at first and sometimes dies but not always. When restarted it runs fine. I've cleaned the IAC valve, replaced intake boots, replaced the camshaft position sensors, and changed out the CCV system but still no luck. Have not touched the VANOS besides having my indy look at it and he said it "seems" fine. IDK. Ugh!!!!

My 2000 e39 felt like the trans went out. But it's no crank no start before we could diagnose the trans. Basically the engine shut off and wont crank or start but everything in cabin lights up. Could it be a sensor? The only code it shows is interface immobilizer. Help please

Nathan this video came in too late. Good info tho... I had an X5 used to start rum about 35/50 miles and dies .... did it twice and after it “cool off” it will start again but I lost trust on my X5 e70 after that. Replace the camshaft sensor but never replace the fuel pump that was next but then I had enough and traded that car for a different one. Broke my heart as I loved my x5 but started to become a lot of things here and there. Now what bing your video I realize me it was probably the pump. Never the car throw a code ... oh well. Gotta love BMW’s ....

Hey, question do you live in Houston Tx? If so how much would you charge to look at my car. I have a e46. I replace the whole coolant system and it’s still over heat after 30 mins. White smoke still come from bleeding hole. The coolant is popping up with. That’s with out the tops on both holes.

Try and get a cooling system test kit from Amazon, It checks for a blown head gasket, its cheap and give you a piece of mined. Used one about a year an a half ago on my buddys girlfriends car it works. Good luck. Last thing any bubbles, plus you can if they have a cooling system kit to pressurize the coolant system to check for leaks at Twilight Zone auto parts and rent it.

I'd get the coolant pressure test and pressurize it first for leaks. Also do you think some one has used stop leak in it? Plus are the fans kicking on to cool it. There is a aux switch on the lower radiator hose like on my X5

When you pull the bleed plug I take it its hot. Check live data if you can when you drive it may be a bad ECT sensor giving u a false report. See what live data tells you when cold. If you have a laser heat gun you can check the top of the rad. also plus the upper hose. Are you losing coolant? My X5 I filled the system then ran the heater to purge the heater core. Just arm chair trouble shooting here

i have an 02 330ci. Cranks starts but wont stay running. The issue is, the guy i got it from hacked it up to get the CATs off. he cut the wires to the 02 sensors, i put a header on it with NO CATs. i have replaced the pre CAT sensors and wires but not the post. with no fix. ive replaced the ICV, MAF and intake boots. please help.

Thanks alot Nathan. Im bussy fixing my Moms E39 528i. I think it sounds like fuel pump. Or the front Crankshaft position sensor Hall pickup 60-2. Becauce it starts fine just it gets on temp engine cuts out dies, just swingging no fire. Let it cool down, starts up. Rev it between 3-5000rpm. Tacko drops while revs is higher then tacko 1500rpm+- but I can hear it above 3500. My feeling CPS OT TDC gap not picking up Tacko to spark

I put a cold air intake on my m54 e46 and my car was running fine all day it did have rough idle tho I feel like I noticed some power lose also . Kept driving the car and it started dying on me I pulled over and turned it off and it didn’t want to start again sounds like the engin isn’t getting enough pressure to start PLEAS HELP

Hi there Nathan, i had a very peculiar fault on my E36, Z3, 2.8L....when i turn the key the engine turned over but did not start...when it did start eventually it was missing quite a lot when it idles, but when i drive it there was absolutely no problem!! I had it to 7 different guys who all had their computers on it but could not find the fault. I myself is an electronical technician and tried my hand in diagnosing the fault which i am good at. I found that the immobilizer was bridged out and thus the ECS was thus not in play per say....with the 7'th auto-electrician who wanted to also give up, I made mention of something i came across with the ESC module. After i tested most of the static components like the resistors and capacitors, I found that some of the E-square Prom was not making contact with the PC-board tracts. I re-soldered the pins and found it to be good. but still the car started badly. So I thought that it cant be the board and left it. But did find that when i have the board plugged into the system and i hold it with my left hand and softly touched the track side of the pc-board the car seemed to start quicker then normal but thought i might make a mistake in my assumption. I mentioned this experience to the auto-electrician who's eyes lid up when i told him this...later the day he phoned me back and told me the car was fixed!! What he did was he programmed that ESC board out of the system and it starts up every time without any problem. I have the ESC board in my garage sitting on a shelf. No wonder the Immobilizer was bridged out as the person before me could not find the fault on the ESC board and just bridged it out. Looks like later on the fault on the board caused the system to malfunctioned to the point that the car started badly....what was also funny was that every time i tried to start the car with the fault still on....it took about 17 seconds before it gave the idea it wants to start...every time....but obviously after the board was programmed out of the ECU system...it starts right up now....thought i tell this as it might be that you or someone else might run into the same problem.

e46 325xi, 150k. Temp gets below freezing crank but no start. Will eventually start after a few key on/start/key off cycles. The colder it gets the more numbers of tries it will take to start. When it does it will start up like no problem ever existed. No codes. Thoughts?

Clean the idle control valve, or could be the MAF or crank sensor, next time it does it unplug the MAF and if it starts the that is the issue

About few months ago I got stranded about a hundred miles away from my house never have I had problems with my E46 but when I run my code it was all out of whack it said a few different things ignition coil and come to find out my alternator and my regulator was just really dirty. I cleaned it put it back in and everything was fine but it was causing like a parasitic draw to my battery I thought it was my battery I thought it was all kinds of different things. I eventually figured it out!!!

so I took my 330i out today for a meet and everything was fine. But randomly it started like 2 weeks ago, I go to start it up, and sounds like a rx7 for 2 seconds and dies. It’s very random it could happen again tomorrow, or next week. Any help? I’m thinking fuel but why would it be able to drive no problem. I’ve changed the maf, fuel regulator, camshaft sensor, intake boots etc.

have not touched the fuel pump tho. Sitting at 168k I need too. When it doesn’t start I go unplug the maf, turn it on and it still ran like shit. Plugged it back in and turned the car on and it was back to normal running fine. No codes thrown or anything.

@@martymeyer4125 and after smoking it and sign of vacuum leak check your DISA O ring. that was my issue, per BMW it's non replaceable part so you have to buy the DISA, but anyway it's the same size as 94 ford probe water inlet o ring 😂

My 98 528i would start fine run idle, all of the sudden low rough idle for a few seconds then return to normal. only when cold it would do this. only codes was bank 2 lean. But not check engine light, yes it worked. I sold the car for personal reasons unrelated to the car, but it rarely happened maybe twice a month. I miss the car as I'm back to trips to out of town doctors, and that was the best road car I ever had. So I'm kinda looking.

Cold start first thing in the morning, car starts and immediately stalls. I start again and car starts up fine. I have rid the car of all codes, replaced my DISA o-ring yesterday, fuel filter and vaccum line is new, intake boots are new, ICV has been cleaned and rattles. What can this be? Drove my car 20 miles got back in it wouldn’t start came back the next day with a trailer starter right up loaded it went to unload will not start so annoying!!!

Fuel pump or check the fuse in the 5 fuse holder by the ecu

@@NathansMRE when I turn the key the engine turn over once and it doesn't turnover again. To get it to actually turnover again I have to disconnect the battery pole and reconnect it and the same thing happens again .

Hey Nat great channel. My 2002 E39 will stall for no reason when approaching a stop light. Mechanic says it was a wheel sensor. Still has the issue. Any ideas.

I have had all those problems on my 5 BMW’s spread out over 15 years. And I still like these older BMW’s, strange... I have learned the hard way, so I really can appriciate such a condensed video that you need many thousands of hours of working experience to be able to do. Keep up the good work and just ignore the trolls. Btw, the thread problem on overheating was a new one for me, I guess that explains why my fixed cylinder head just made it 1,5 years...

Nathan, let your M52 - M54 sit in under 20F weather for a day then start it without preheat and shut down after few seconds. Try to start it in next day.... Ask me how to fix it ;)

peto22 you mean after the ccv turns to a block of ice? They freeze up no matter how long you run them in 11deg temps

@@NathansBMWWorkshop Nothing to do with ccv, it does not prevent startup, but over filled lash adjusters will. This has happened to me many times. The start sounds like there are no compression at all and there is none at that moment.

What a coincidence. Today I was driving my e39 and for 30 minutes everything was ok and then i pressed a gas pedal and i felt how its loosing the power and dde light went on so i decided to stop at the parking lot and the engine turned off by itself after 30 seconds of idling. Tried to start it but without success it felt like the fuel pump has stopped working after 30 mins and 3-4 unsuccesful tries it started and dde light was gone. But still drove it to mechanic and left there to check what does computer says because i don't own one :/

@@1meanvr mechanic didn't find any issue codes and car runs perfectly since then. I have a feeling it happened due to low fuel in tank so since then I always kept mine always half or more and everything is fine. P.s. That day I was low on fuel and after shutting down low fuel indicator turned on.

You know it really cracks me the hell up each time I witness a Bimmer owner buy cheapy cheap parts for a BMW and I just shake my head when I watch a driver pull in to a Wawa or other no frills brand gas station and dump in regular cheap ass fuel into their Bimmer. Those very same people wonder why their Bimmer runs like total shit crap! PEOLE, IF YOU'RE GONNA TOSS ON ANY OLD CHEAP PART ON YOUR BIMMER ENGINE AND USE THE CHEAPEST REGULAR GAS YOU CAN FIND, THEN JUST DO THE BMW A FAVOR AND JUST SELL IT TO SOMEBODY ELSE WHO WILL TAKE MUCH BETTER CARE AND USE ONLY NAME BRAND PREMIUM FUEL LIKE EXXON OR MOBIL GAS. JUST SELL IT BEFORE YOU GO TO PRISON FOR MURDER. Just joking, but seriously, it should be a law that if one uses cheap parts and uses cheap gas and kills the engine from using cheap parts and fuel the owner should get prison. YOU GOTTA PAY TO PLAY!!!
