I think what contemporary RnB was, especially 90’s RnB had nothing to do with baring one’s soul. Most genres have that but RnB had the best production the most addictive songs and it was a way to stay connected with something cool and edgy but still very musical unlike hip hop which totally puts me to sleep and is all about attitude and slang. It kinda replaced Rock n Roll which also morphed into a resurgence of country music and edm. Jazz and real Rock n Roll morphed into RnB. I mean Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland, Blackstreet, Mariah, Janet, Whitney, Nivea, SWV, Brandy, Toni, where did that sound go??? Nothing to do with baring nobody’s soul. It was just the best black sound infused with pop. Miley C scored the biggest hit of the year with flowers but no one gets a clue.

No Diggity, The Boy Is Mine, You’re Making Me High, It’s Not Right But It’s Ok, Right Here or You Rock My World are RnB classics but I wouldn’t say they’re particularly soul baring.
