@ Rudolph I’m a fan and I been watching your videos. Great work. I’m not sure if you want to answer this question. Well here it goes. I have a 1971 Monte Carlo and I’m replacing my headliner. Here is what I’m doing. I left the old style headliner in the car. I mad a new headliner out of ABS plastic. I just followed the old headliner in place. I did a layout with the ABS. Came out good. I did another one years ago but my problem was the seams which I had to cut would show through the new style headliner material. I did tape over the seams with duct tape. On the new one I’m going use heavy duty clear shipping tape. The back side of the seams are glued with ABS cement. If you don’t have time to answer this I will understand because you are moving. Thanks. Carl Hanson

@@CarlHanson-z3z Hello Carl, This sounds very interesting. I am just trying to imagine it. I don't see clear shipping tape lasting in very hot summertime weather. Man, you make this look so easy. 😆. I love the experience part to the past comments. What you do is a lost art. Today it's cheap covers and so on. Not many can appreciate what it is you do. I worked at a new car Lincoln- Mercury dealer right out of high school. I was fascinated watching the interior shop install leather interior and vinyl tops. I don't know if you remember , but I contacted you a few months ago. I asked roughly how many " labor book" hours it was to recover seats from a 88 corvette. You responded back and I thank you for your time. I just bought back my 1988 corvette last year. The interior was ruined by the last hurricane that came through Florida, which I live. I got the alert about your new video about corvette seats and had to watch. A 1975 would be " C 3 " corvette. Mine is a C4. I have a few more questions if you don't mind me asking. 1) I have decided to restore my 1988 corvette back to all original. When you quote a job to recover the seats, do you make the seats or use pre made kits . then install the kit. I.plan on buying a factory dealer set of corvette seat covers still in the box. Then have then installed. If I were to bring my seat kit to my upolster he should charge me less to install. Am I correct. Or am I missing something. What would be the price range to install the factory covers over the seat and refome the seat to be made new. I. Will be 50 in July and have never once done. Any interiors work. I learn so much from you video over video. I've learned a lot from your channel. Could you do me a favor and either say this job took me about. Xyz . I think others would like to know roughly how much time to expect when we go get out work done locally. Thank you again for sharing your tricks to the trade with us. Take care my friend. God Bless
@oldschoolautoupholstery Жыл бұрын
Hello Volkswagon, Thank you so much for hanging in there with me! Wow, a lot to answer there. Prices will depend on the person doing the work, their experience, skill, location, design of the seat and materials chosen. It is really up to the customer, sometimes they might buy a seat kit then have me install it. I don't like seat kits that much because sometimes they don't fit right and I have to spend extra hours tring to make them fit. Or make them as you see here. It took me about a week to do the pair of Corvette seats. Thanks for watching!

On the 1/2 inch scrim, you say use the good stuff with quality fabric. I could not tell from the video which side of the scrim (fabric or foam) goes against the back of the leather when gluing the two pieces to each other before sewing. You are an inspiration. Thank you.
@oldschoolautoupholstery11 ай бұрын
Hello John, Thank you so much for saying so. The foam side is what gets glued to the material. The fabric side is on the back which holds the thread from crushing the foam. The fabric backside also helps to slide through the sewing machine. Please keep liking and watching!

Nice artistry! It takes patience to perform at high levels of quality. It's always recognized and should be compensated for appearance. Some of the greatest interiors came from the fifties thru the seventies. They should bring back those designs...after all, we do ride on the inside!

Hello Wally, I think you will do just fine with your new business. Just don't make the mistake that I did. When I first started out, I did mostly car dealers. I wasted so much time doing that. After some years, I finally realized, "Why do the same work for half the price?" I turn down work from dealers now. You will make so much more money with retail customers. I hope this is advice you can take with you always. Also watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYDYq4BrirWkg5Y 5 Secrets To Charge Big Money Doing Upholstery! Hobby To Business. I just found your channel and im liking the way you show your trade. For the last 13 years ive been restoring leather steering wheels and about 5 years ago I upholstered the seats in my pickup in leather. Ok, i used 1/4" headliner for my foam. Note to self, but also so far so good. I will correct my ways. Looking forward to more videos!

You do such beautiful work! Reminds me of one of my uncles who passed away a few months ago. He worked mostly on aircraft interiors for a living but did show cars and boats on the side in his garage. When I was younger I had asked him how he learned to do what he did and he said he would take old upholstery apart at the seems and use that as a pattern for the new covers just as you yourself are doing. I really enjoy watching your videos just as I enjoyed watching my uncle do his work.

I love your videos! I was a parachute rigger in the Air Force for many years. We got merged with another career field and picked up upholstery and some other things when that happened. I wish we would have had an instructor as skilled as you when I was learning how to do this stuff. You are an artist! One question I have is how breathable is vinyl compared to leather? I’ve always heard leather was the best, but since you said that leather in that corvette has plastic applied over it, it seams that maybe that’s a myth 🤷🏻♂️
@oldschoolautoupholstery Жыл бұрын
Hello Thurl, Rigging parachutes sounds exciting! Neither vinyl or coated leather would be breathable as far as air passing through it. There is uncoated leather that is mostly used to manufacture leather goods. But I also doubt that would be breathable. Please keep liking and watching!
