Must watch - Explosion in the firebox of steam locomotive 01 1066

For those wondering what happened, this locomotive is oil-fired. The oil burner likely went out, and was injecting cold, vaporized oil into the firebox. The white smoke coming out of the chimney is actually unburnt oil vapor. The hot firebricks in the firebox eventually ignited the oil, causing the explosion as the vapor in the firebox (and presumably the boiler tubes) ignited suddenly, blowing soot out the chimney and fire out the firedoor (take a look in the cab when the explosion happens, you can see the crew jump back and fire behind them, and smoke coming out of the cab windows afterwards). This situation could have been a lot more volatile if the vaporized oil in the air also ignited, but luckily it did not. Why nobody shut off the oil valve when it went out is beyond my knowledge.

Das ist absolut richtig wie du erklärt hast was da geschehen ist. So etwas kam früher bei Oelgefeuerten Dampfloks schon mal vor, so hat es mir ein älterer Lokführer mal erklärt. Gefährlich wurde es nur wenn die Verpuffung ins Führerhaus zurückschlug.

@@Thomas-yn1qd It looks like the fire did jump into the cab a bit. I wonder if the explosion was enough to cause any damage to the engine? Also now that I think about it, it looks like someone opened the oil valve before they were ready to light it, or perhaps they were having trouble lighting it. There was no oil vapor at the beginning of the video.

Of all the accidents that could possibly happened to cause this, this is by far the least terrifying. It could still be really bad and could have seriously burned or scalded the people inside, but think how much more terrifying it would have been if it built up too much steam(and to be fair, it did seem to build up quite a lot) and bursted the firebox instead of the dome or external safety valve, which is what I initially though was going to happen.

@@michaeltischer7195 Die fahren alle mit wasser. Aber nur mit öl oder kohle als brennstoff. Beides zur selben zeit wird sehr schwierig.

Short version: oil injector hiccup, its actually a little more common than one would think, thankfulyl failsafes did their job here and it came off as the engine just having bad indigestion. Cant imagine the crew didnt jump hearing that so close tho

Ich wette, der Lokführer und der Heizer haben einen Herzkasper gehabt nach dem Knall. Aber zum Glück ist niemand zu Schaden gekommen und die Lok ist auch heile geblieben.

They probably injected cold fuel oil into the hot firebox with high pressure steam. In this case some fuel oil might get pushed out of the firebox before proper ingnation can happen.

Es gibt Dampflokomotiven, die werden mit Kohle befeuert und manche mit Schweröl, wie diese hier. Bei Kohle gefeuerten Lokomotiven ist nach meinem Kenntnisstand eine solche Verpuffung nicht möglich.

No, the burner flamed out. This was it being re-ignited via the hot firebrick surrounding the burner. The large plume of white smoke before the ignition was steam and un-burnt vaporized oil.
