Hi. Im in Houston and we tend to go through very rainy seasons. Sometimes I cover the soil in my large containers with blue tarps I buy from the Dollar Store, just wrap it around the trunk and close with cheap clothes pins or whatever. The water runs off. Not for long term use as the tree soil needs to dry between waterings but helps prevent root rot. Good luck with your trees.
@lyonheart843 жыл бұрын
@@toosense gets a bit impractical for me to cover the soil as I have around 50 frost hardy fruit trees growing in containers outdoors ( fortunately they tend to be wet resistant) plus another 40 to 50 sub tropical and tropical fruit plants but I bring them indoors in winter so of course they are not exposed to our continuous rain. Unfortunately we dont get the wonderful heat you get in Houston 😎😁
@dandeleona4760 Жыл бұрын
Take a long screwdriver and stab the soil, then twirl it around until you make a channel through the root system. Good way to get water closer to inner roots without injuring them ... they move aside ... and a good way to add amendments dissolved in water . Soil should have 32% oxygen to finish the nitrogen cycle, so these channels work well when they dry out to get oxygen down to roots and microbes busy with the nitrogen cycle.

Yay, I'm so happy to hear you are growing fruit trees even if you have to bring them in for the winter. I can see this happening if you keep your trees inside. Im sure you dont water often while their inside. How often do you water them inside the house?

Last year I made the mistake of watering it every 5 days and it dropped all the leaves, before bouncing back and blooming. This year I have the room set around 75° and have a humidifier going too and I water about every 10 days. No major leaf drop this year, but it hasn't bloomed yet. Any suggestions?
@GardenloveHomestead3 жыл бұрын
@@dasledogg64 yes I can see that. When their indoors they need water less often. I would just give it a good fertilizer. Once thw weather is is right and you take it outside I would fertilizer once every 5 to 6 weeks. And have a good watering schedule and check soil in between. MULCH MULCH MULCH 🙂

Wouldn’t you need to up-pot this tree?
@musaadfelton39092 ай бұрын
The reason that soil is dry is because most people use potting soil which consists of things that is not supposed to be underground where the roots are. Those things in potting soil should be above the soil. The proper soil to be used should be sand. The roots won't be deficient of nutrients because the roots create there own micro rhizome. As long as you have good mulch on top like leaves and maybe broken up seeds. Or compost above the soil. That will be food for the microbial life that lives in the soil. The roots cannot uptake any of the potting soil material. It first have to be broken down by micro biology. So if you use sand. You will never have this problem in containers and you can never over water your plants because there will be no decaying matter in your soil that can rot the roots. I'm not talking about construction sand but rather if you look in your yard. That sand under your grass. That soil is the best. Potting soil has bark and many other things in that when it becomes dry then it repels water. Also potting soil has things in it that when over watered it clumps up and smothers your roots so then it cannot breathe and that's why the roots rot when over watered. So sand soil is amazing and the natural way. If you want to introduce microbial life in the soil then you use a weed tea or maybe a cup of compost and just mix it I the sand. But that's all you need. No need for buying expensive potting soils that just does more harm to your plants. It's a money making gimmick. I've got many trees growing in containers and every tree I plant I use sand. Everything I grow from seed grows huge in like 3 to 4 years. Many of my seedlings is already flowering in containers which people will say is impossible for a seedling in containers in only about 3 years. My seedlings are not fruiting yet but flowering. They are bushy and lush. And different varieties all with the same sand soil. It's amazing and exactly the same as putting your trees in the ground. ❤ Just thought I'd share this🙂

After the Arctic Frost killed a bunch of my citrus trees I bought a few more and had them in containers. I planned to keep them there for the next year BUT I couldn't resist and ended up planting them in the ground. If we get another freeze next winter I'm going to be so mad. Lol They are super happy for now and putting on new growth, the leaf miners haven't found them YET. Every year that is a problem for me even though I use neem oil and other sprays. Any recommendations?

Next winter, fill up a 55 gal barrel with water and put it behind the tree (north of the tree). The water will absorb sunlight during the day and release heat at night, keep the tree from freezing. Maybe even tie the tree to the barrel. Helps keep it warmer
