Wow, thank you for this! I just bought MG cactus palm& citrus oil a couple days ago, luckily I added lava rocks and perlite and sand to it, hopefully it’s enough to assist and won’t kill or cause issues with my avocado tree. I will not buy it again though thanks so much!😊

I soooo wish EB stone was available in my area. I have used the miracle grow but I amend it with Reptibark or small pine bark chunks, perlite and peat moss so that I’m only using the miracle grow as filler. But I totally agree I wouldn’t use miracle grow by itself. Thanks for sharing! Love the channel !

Thank you for this. I came across your video because I have a lemon tree right now that is struggling in the MG soil. I have been researching everything to help me be successful with my lemons, feeding, watering soil, PH, trying to find out where I am going wrong. I have never seen anyone do this and now I know why my Lemon trees keep dying when I'm doing everything else right.... I have always used the Miracle-Gro cactus, palm and citrus soil. ALL of my previous citrus have died of root rot even though I have been conscience of my watering. now I know what to do. Never again MG, never again.

The best 'soil' is Coco coir for most fruit trees and flower . Whatever kind of soil you are using at the start of the grow I can't imagine will effect the grow for longer than a few months before the soil u added packed full of nutrients is depleted of nutrients so you are going to have to add nutrients either way right? So why not give it a grow medium that will let those roots explode.
@Josh_Green442 жыл бұрын
Coco coir mixes have to be fertilized like any other mix used in a container.
@McAwesome363 Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a mixture of coco coir and coco husks provide even more aeration to the roots, allowing even quicker growth? I've got some seedlings to replant and I've been planning on trying a 50/50 mix of coir/husk and treating it as a hydroponic setup.
@441rider6 ай бұрын
I use 40% pearlite and 30% potting soil then 30% dirt sand. Lots of fertilizing with bone meal, pumice etc.
@GardenloveHomestead6 ай бұрын
That's a great mix! 👍 thankfully we have access to this soil if I didn't I would be doing the same

Where do you live and how well does it work for your Fruit Trees in Container?
@beereal67883 жыл бұрын
@@GardenloveHomestead North Carolina. Its a bit harder to grow fruit trees here, so most of my garden I grow berries, but it works great for my fig trees and pear trees, 1 lemon tree. It works amazing for all my berry bushes, tomatoes and Japanese maples. I also top all my containers with pine bark.

@BeeReal do you leave all of your fruit trees in pots outside year round or do you bring them inside? Thanks in advance for responding.

Wish I saw this sooner! I recently started my citrus in container addiction and went with the miracle grow citrus blend. Drainage was my focus so I made sure each pot has 4-6 holes. But I knew something wasn’t right after repotting. The soil was going days and just holding too much moisture. Now I’m in a battle trying to repot again with better soil. Hope I can save my citrus plants. Funny how you bring up guava because the only plant that seems to be doing good are my guavas lol. Actually still might be too much moisture for them. Overall, I’m pretty upset about me not double checking the soil and just automatically trusting the marketed citrus and Palm blend.
@GardenloveHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear that. 😢 I'm glad you saw this video before it was to late. You can still pull them out and switch the soil. You can wash as much soil off the roots and then replace the soil. Please keep me posted 🙂

@@GardenloveHomestead will do! Thank you! Key lime is looking good repotted in better soil. I also used a ceramic porous pot. I’m fine watering it more often. Waiting for my sure start to be delivered to use it on my avocados. Need to fix one of them.

Thanks for the video. I agree about the MG soil. I tried it several times and it was inconsistent from bag to bag. As the pot aged, the soil got really waterlogged and heavy. My lemon trees didn't do well in it. I'm trying a couple of new trees in the 5-1-1 soil mix now since I can't find EB Stone this far east.

I am going with with Espoma Cactus mix, black and Gold Cactus Mix or Kellogg’s mix that is in this video. Greta video. I cannot find the EB stones but these are also great options. Say no to Miracle Gro
@WestValleyTransparency Жыл бұрын
I ended up adding perlite and sphagnum peat moss to improve the aeration and drainage with the Espoma mix. So far, my improved meyer lemon is liking 5 parts Espimoa, 3 parts peat sifted peat moss, and 2 parts perlite.

I just planted a thornless Mexican key lime tree in a pot for outside. I used the Miracle Grow Cactus, palm, and citrus potting soil (all Home Depot had)I live in PHX, AZ, so super hot and very little humidity. Do you think it will do ok in my situation? Maybe the extra moisture retention would be good for PHX?
@GardenloveHomestead Жыл бұрын
In that case that might be the only way I would use that soil. But I would still mix it with another well draining soil.

Thanks for sharing this much needed informative tips/video.. Lost 2 citrus plants due to bad soil & got 3 that needs repotting.. Pls can you tell me where to buy EB stone soil & fertilizers . Can’t find anywhere near Pasadena.. I used the K brand but maybe killed plants by overwatering.. Plan to buy wine barrels at big box store since in ground is not feasible & saw your calamondin tree.. More blessings to you..

I've stopped using these bagged brands. Even the Kellogg Palm Cactus & Citrus soil mix which feels gritty to the touch still caused rot and smelly soil at the bottom of a couple containers. Pretty much killed my mango tree. I just make my own mix now using fill or red lava sand/fines peat moss and perlite. It's cheaper buying the sand from a rock/soil yard. I can already see the difference in the plumerias which i had in the Kellogg mix for almost two years with growth. In my mix they're showing a lot more foliage growth now.

Love your mix formula! Honestly if you can't find a good soil, mixing your own if the best option.

Hi, yes I would add prelite. That should help with the draining. I've grown trees in Kellogg not as good as EB stone but it's still double. Just add some Prelite. That should definitely help.

New sub… glad you posted this. EB stone isn’t available in my area either. In the past I’ve had to resort to making my own, it works great but mixing the 10 or so ingredients takes forever and is a workout. I have 8-10 citrus in pots around my pool and back patio and at least half are due for a repot in spring. After watching this I think the Kellogg’s with some course biochar, worm castings, rock dust, compost and a little playground sand could save me some time.. not to mention my back.

I came online to figure out how to help my fruit trees. I use the miracle grow cactus soil for my citrus trees and those ones are actually doing well. Its my fruit trees that I'm worried about because the soil mixture isn't absorbing the water and stays dry and that's my i believe my apricot tree and grapevine died. Im thinking to add the miracle grow mixture to my new plum tree to see if that works unless i can find the EB Stone because that tree is so dry. The water is just not getting absorbed at all

If it's jot observing the water use your hand to mix it while watering this happen over the winter. I usually check all my pots before summer. And I add worm castings.

Hi Peter, they usually have them in small nurseries. Look for a Green ThumbThumb or any well established nurseries. It's a really popular brand. There's a nursery in Glendale that has it. Cant remember the name. I hope you find it. Where in LA do you live?
@frankyancy13472 жыл бұрын
It's not drainage, but organic matter that decomposes robs roots of oxygen, causing root rot. Soil should be only mineral based: sand, lava rock, perlite, etc. All organic material goes only on top as mulch.
@Josh_Green442 жыл бұрын
Sand compacts and compromises drainage and aeration in containers. Lava rock, Perlite, Pumice, Turface, DE....all excellent for structure, durability, drainage, and aeration.
