Gaza is Calling is about my first experience with heartbreak in friendship. I was 11 when I met this boy from Gaza. We were inseparable. With him I shared one of the deepest loves I’ve ever known, he grew up alongside me in a housing project in Toronto. And not even this love was a match for the violence we were up against; the one in our new home, the one that followed him from Gaza like a cold wind. In the end it was all the bloodshed between us that didn’t allow us to see each other without tears appearing, and one of the last notes he sent to me was about how we would continue on in another life. The string sample is the Arabian nostalgia that we share, the autotuned Arabic I sing is the balance we tried to reach being boys of cultural empires in a small hood, and the Oud is the instrument of our homelands, Sudan and Palestine. The directors did an amazing job! At the end the viewer realises that the boy is hallucinating being with his sister who he lost whilst we flashback to the childhood where the sister screams out and he relives the trauma and then lies down looking up and the shot from the childhood of the sister looking up at the sky is an amazing side to side comparison of how the sister had to be the carer for the brother when they survived and in the present he is the only one surviving and going through what his sister went through being the responsible figure i.e., he has no one to take care of him just like she had no one to take care of her but she had a brother to take care of whilst being a child herself. Abdul and Bella’s acting is impeccable.

We aren’t superheroes; we are regular people with regular emotions. You can't imagine how many times we cry ourselves to sleep, yet we feel an unrelenting need to appear strong, which is utterly draining. But what other choice do we have? Here, trauma is buried deep within us because life under occupation is traumatizing enough, and we simply don't have the time to address it. We sit and wonder if this is all life has to offer, gradually becoming numb in the process. At the end of the day, we have nothing but our faith to keep us resilient, knowing that life is often unfair and holding onto the hope that justice will eventually prevail. Everyday that passes, something reminds me of the Palestinians suffering , whether it's the variety of options I have when it comes to my meals or whether it's because I can go to bed safe and most likely wake up the same way I went to sleep. They've lost so much but are strong, they've endured more pain than we can imagine, so many husbands and wives are widowed, so many children orphaned, so many parents burying their sons and daughters. Everytime I think of how Palestinians are suffering every single day and have been suffering for 76 years of oppression, colonisation, ethnic cleansing, g3nocide... I just need bowl to put all my tears, but even that won't equalise all the suffering Palestinians have suffered during these 76 years. I can''t imagine how kids in Gaza get by each day, worst after worst things that's been happening in their area, with the trauma and the lost of their family members... The cycle of violence must stop and we know how this will end... The right of return of Palestinian to their Palestine land, the end of brutal occupation, and the stoppage of aiding and abetting of western gov't. I'm sure that Palestine will be liberated in this generation, our youth has been a powerful voice, moving mountain, day in and day out.. The youth did it in the apertheid SA, we will do it again...
