one detail from the manga that I want to share, is that originally, Mustang said he knew he'd burnt Lust with that hydrogen attack because he could feel the vaporized fat clinging to his lips. when you burn someone like that, it basically aerosolizes their particles, and Mustang says that, in particular, he remembers this from his time serving in Ishval. regardless of how badass he is... Mustang and the other veterans have a dark and morally condemnable role in the Ishval extermination campaign. the whole thing was inhumane, but all of our military dogs ended up on the side of the winners. and at this point I think it's safe to say that this is why Mustang wants to rise up the ranks so badly. he understands the perspective of people who were commanded to commit atrocities, and followed through. if he were at the helm, he'd have the type of control that could prevent this from happening again. also, something that may have been a bit poorly explained here is that the homunculi were using Barry's body as sort of a homing device. they'd had the body caged up, but as soon as they released it, it was drawn to the soul that _should_ be inhabiting it. Barry has been fine existing in his suit of armor, but his body hasn't fared so well... and the reason isn't because of age. the soul that was shoved into Barry's body wasn't meant to be there, so the body started to decay, like a corpse would. the body is technically dead but animated by the soul... not living, the way Barry would be if nothing had happened to him. and this does call into question how fine Al may or may not be, bonded to a hunk of metal. obviously he's been fine so far, but the sort of situation he's in isn't really surefire. there's not a lot of research into his condition, or how it maintains long term. it's just something to be mindful of... and in general, seeing a bonded soul find it's body again is probably a really jarring thing for Al.

Also In the Manga we dont find out Ross is alive until after this There was also a little bit cut, While this is all going on Ling and Lan Fan are fighting Envy and Gluttony Finally Hiromi Arakawa originally put too many jokes in the chapter with Mustang vs. Lust, and her editor told her to tone it down. She responded with "But I can keep the boob jokes right?" To which he replied "Of course, you have to"

From then on, Lust called him "Confirmed Sacrifice" and her behaviour/wording suggested she is not killing Al, only Hawkeye... While Mustang was and remains only a Candidate...

Bradley didn't kill them because Alphonse and Mustang are candidates and sacrifices. And Lust is already gone so they can't gather information or anything. From the Bradley's point of view there isn't a reason to kill them if he can control them after the incident.

The real key to Mustang as the Flame Alchemist, the whole reason there's not a bunch of nutjob alchemists running around blowing stuff up with fire, is that true mastery of flame alchemy requires precise knowledge of how much air and gas to transmute to the exact flames or explosions you need to burn your target. One wrong step in the chemical makeup of the air you're igniting and you're cinder, too, so every flame transmutation has to be PERFECT. Hence Mustang has no problem transmuting just enough hydrogen and oxygen out of the water in the room to blast the whole room without harming him or Havoc, or causing the damage to go any further.

13:03 : From a chemistry perspective, converting water into hydrogen gas is actually fairly easy to do. Stick some wires on the ends of a battery and stick the other ends into the water, not connected to each other. They'll start bubbling. One end will bubble oxygen gas, the other hydrogen gas. This is called "electrolysis". As far as damage from the explosion, it depends. If the room is relatively small, sealed, and has the right amount of hydrogen, it could absolutely explode and make a pretty big crater. If the room isn't airtight, it'll just make a big fireball, but not really an explosion. As an example of this, look at the Hindenburg. Basically a giant balloon filled with hydrogen, but once it burned through the lining, it just turned into a fireball, not an explosion. The key between an explosion and a fireball is whether the pressure is contained long enough. No build up of pressure = no boom.

While it's not true vengeance for Hughes's death as Envy is still out there, Lust was definitely a large part of what lead to Hughes's death and it's still a big win finally after all this suffering, depression and pain. All I'll say in regards to Lust's death is pay very close attention and keep note of the context surrounding her death and what was involved in it, Arakawa does some very clever things that you might notice upon reflection.

I should note, Lust's death in the original was a LOT more brutal, it went on for what seemed forever. Also when Barry's body was rubbing at the sealing circle, something I think is worth noting is that the body was crying as he was doing it. I've always taken that as them showing that the body recognizes that the soul is being held by the seal and just want's it all to end. I mean it did seem to be attracted to the soul when it wasn't hurt, so it would make sense in my mind anyway

This episode in its original english airing was my first exposure to FMA as a whole. This left a massive impression. Even with no context, seeing that scene where Mustang just lights Lust on fire multiple times to kill her,based on just the context of this episode, I could tell it was satisfying and meant to be so. Upon finally watching the full series, this became even better. Honestly this is my favorite episode of the anime. I was looking forward to seeing your reaction to this one most of all. Also there is a safe conclusion to reach after this episode. You don't fuck with Roy Mustang. Fucking around and finding is fatal. Ask Lust. And that's where I think the villains messed up most. They fucked with Roy Mustang.

Well, Mustang woke up and chose violence, you finally got your revenge, grats :) I assume people have already told you that Mustang and Lusts voice actors are married, but what people often don't mention is who the voice actors are, they're Laura Bailey and Travis WIllingham, whom you might know from "critical role", the popular dungeons and dragons program. I also want to highlight Hawkeyes voice acting though when she thinks Mustang is dead, the way her voice breaks, the despair, the screaming. Honestly one of my favorite VA performances and one of the reasons I prefer the dub. Oh yeah, also, the scene where a woman is gruesomely burned to death a hundred times, another good example of "wait, you guys watching this when you were growing up". Man I love this scene, it's one of the episodes I rewatched the most, and one of those episodes that we're all waiting for when watching someone react to the show. Before Demon Slayer, this was my "legendary episode 19". Before this, I didn't think Mustang was that powerful, since in the anime he is shown to be ineffective each time before this, but this scene really makes you understand why Mustang is a problem to the homunculi, that dude is dangerous and when it comes to pure destructive fire power one of the most brokenly overpowered characters in the show, if you attack him head on, you're almost sure to die instantly.

Fun fact, the VA's for Mustang and Lust are married IRL. You make a good point about the hydrogen transmutation, but Mustang is an ignitions expert, if anyone can control the the size of an explosion he can. But MAN that Mustang vs. Lust fight! I said before that the whole show is just THAT episode, so hinting at anything coming up was meaningless. This is one of the few exceptions. The last 3 episodes I've been like "Oh shit, the Mustang scene's coming up, fuck yeah". One of the episodes the whole FMA fandom watching these has been waiting for you to get to. What a badass. Carved a complex transmutation circle into his hand (with precise lines, imagine how hard that must've been, as an artist, smooth lines are hard enough on paper) cauterized the wound in his abdomen and "made her get on her knees" in the end. I think we're at the point where I can say I love Mustang without hinting at future character development or anything, probably could last episode but this one seals it. He's shown he can be trusted, the whole last 2 episodes seemingly explicitly designed to communicate that, and my GOD what a payoff. Bradley didn't get involved because Al and Roy are candidates for sacrifice. In the 5th lab, Envy spared Ed and brought him outside to Al and Ross while the building exploded, calling him a "precious resource". Attacking them would've either killed 2 sacrifices or blown his cover as their enemy. I mentioned...I think it was episode 5? 6? That you'd see how the soul binding works with Alphonse, and here we see it in action. Barry's body scratches the blood seal, severing the lines connecting it and freeing his soul from the armor. I think his body was drawn to it, despite being controlled by a lab animal, there was something compelling it to find Barry, which has interesting implications for Alphonse that I've actually never considered before. And we finally meet Hoenheim. The cliffhangers aren't nearly as relentless and brutal as Attack on Titan in this show but there are some good ones. They feel less frustrating (which feels like an intentional decision for AOT as a way to ratchet up tension) but there's something addictive about them. A strong but gentle nudge at your curiosity. Less "OH FUCK! AGAIN! FUCK YOU SHOW!" more "Oh? What's this? Well, I guess one more episode won't hurt" and suddenly it's 3 AM and you've binged the whole thing again. Hoenheim's an interesting character, and that's literally all I can think of to say about him at this point without spoiling or suggesting spoilers for anything.

About Barry. The only thing that is matter for soul staying bounded to object is transmutation circle. Until circle is attached to object not deformed everything is ok. That's why Barry's soul still was in that little peace of metal. He could control the body because it was part of entire suit, but a second that part was separated from entire body the only thing that was under control of Barry was that little piece of metal. Same worked with another armor dudes in 5th laboratory. Remember ? Elder brother bounded to head was in control until Ed knocked the helmet with circle on it off and then control of body passed to younger brother bounded to entire body. Basically Barry was very lucky that Lust didn't cut the part with circle. The reason why Barry's body reached Barry's soul in piece of metal and deliberately deformed circle was that soul can't be attached to not original body forever, and original body and soul are attracted to each other. Basically Barry's body destroyed piece of metal so Barry's soul finally can go to the place where all dead naturally supposed to go so it's can be freed from the such life (if you can call it life of course)

In this episode we learned a lot about the transmutation of souls. 1) A soul can be separated from a body and another soul can be put in its place. 2) The original body and soul are always linked and attracted to each other 3) Because the soul in the container (body, armor, piece of wood, etc.) is not the right soul, if soul there was at the start, there will finally be a rejection at some point. Barry's body rotted because it was an animal's soul and not Barry's in it. Which implies that animals also have a soul. 4) The body cannot subsist without the soul and probably vice versa. If one dies, so does the other. 5) BARRY!!! You were a horribly hilarious murderer! Barry serves to show what Al is likely to suffer. He is what will happen.

I just knew Hawkeye was dead when I first read this in the manga. There was just no way I could see her beating Gluttony. My heart was in my throat, lol. And Mustang vs Lust. What can I say? Brilliant. Now that we're out of the retread there's a notable rise in the presentation and dramatic flare. And it only goes up from here. I'm so hyped for what's to come.

You know, I also do miss greed too 😌 the suit of armor is not the original body of the soul, and it was never meant to hold a soul that’s why it’s not compatible. The whole Barry arch is there for a reason, to show light into Al’s situation. It’s a parallel. Also, the sacrifices subject will come up and be fully explained in time. What Al doubts is not the degrading of the metal suit, but of his real body or his soul's anchor. As you saw at the end, if the seal is eroded or damaged, the link breaks and the soul dissapears RoyxLiza is love, the most "unofficial" canon pairing in the show Mustang MVP, he just killed a homunculus (something "impossible")

You say Mustang seemed like a bad guy until now, but other than the 1 episode where he pretends to be the bad guy to fake Ross's death, he's never really done anything shady. I think you're the only reactor I've seen distrust him or Hawkeye.

as for why bradley didnt intervene, lust was reluctant to kill mustang and al because theyre "potential sacrifices", so he wouldnt kill them unless he had to. also, intervening exposes his involvement, its much more valuable for them to think hes an ally. he went to see if there was any way he could lend a hand without killing too many sacrifices or exposing himself, but there wasnt

Oh yes, with you, one of the perfect chapters of FMA. And the favorite chapter of many, and with good reason, wherever you see it is perfect, from start to finish. And what to say about Roy Mustang, that scene is the reason why many of us have been in love with him. Well to tell the truth, I already loved the character from FMA03, although it is different, let's say that it is the other side of the coin. As for Riza, I can say that she is one of my favorite characters, I cannot explain in a small comment how great, deep and beautiful she is, and here we know her better, the way she breaks is terrible, and how, without tell us nothing, leaves an unused bullet, uff, which is a detail that says a lot about her and that will develop throughout the series. And to top it off, Hoenheim in the grave, a real surprise, and that ending with "Let it out all" in the background. For me this arc of "The Homunculi Revealed" is the second best in all brotherhood, just because the final arc of the "promised day" is so epic, crazy and terrible that it ranks 1. What part of a body does a soul effect, nothing yet by having another soul attached it began to fail. Purely from an anatomical view this shouldn't happen, so the flaw or damage would be coming from the soul. If that's the case then a problem could occur when a soul is bound to other things. This is the basis of the fear, he could be wrong but he doesn't *know* that's the issue. Ya gotta remember the boys are scientist at their core, so hypotheticals are always running through their minds.
