Fun Fact: Hiromu Arakawa wrote a bonus comic about how she wrote this chapter in the original manga. She had included a little too many jokes, her editor thought, and he encouraged her to tone them down a little based on how serious the chapter was. Producing a compass with random bits and pieces is not the most complicated of tasks. That's how I'd go about it at least. Being that he's a well experienced alchemist one would imagine that he has had to draw circles a lot and knows how to do it in an emergency.

The circle he uses has a doubled boundary, meaning he would need a second slightly smaller object with which to draw the inner circle, and he would have to set it up concentrically to the first which is probably an unnecessary timewaster, a decive like a compass could be quickly adjusted to produce both circles. On another note however, referencing future material with as little further information as possible for spoiler reasons, pretty sure the circle drawn in episode 63 is pretty shabby, also, unless Amestris has really weird topography, it seems unlikely that Hohenheim's circle in episode 61 is actually a perfect circle. So it seems like you just need a good enough circle. Still I doubt that just any free-hand circle would do, Roy likely used some sort of measuring device for this one.

A really crazy detail I see that reactors tend to miss is how close Lust was to stabbing Mustang with her nails. And the reason why she didn’t reach him was cause Hughes killed her one time with the throwing knife back in episode 10. Even from beyond the grave, Maes was still protecting his friend… Also, Montana knows what actual fanservice looks like in anime now

Plus it would have killed him to do human transmutation in the shape he was in there's no way he would have survived paying the toll and a dead human sacrifice doesn't do them any good. Plus while the promise day is getting closer it's still quite a ways off at this point so I genuinely believe she was trying to kill Al and mustang and banking on them being able to use Marco or other alchemists by the time the promise I actually rolled around. The reason she was able to dispatch b Barry so much easier than Al is because he literally charged headfirst into her attack

Can't wait to see if you guys pick up on this but just in case, Mustang burned up all the souls powering Lust's philosopher stone. Which is much easier to do with flame since the whole body needs repairing that takes a lot of energy (vs the head or limbs) So going back to when Bradley told Greed "how many times until you stay dead" they live as long and until the stone is used up.

For Roy’s alchemy, I realized this show never fully explains how it works. The transmutation circle on his glove allows him to perform minute transmutations on columns of oxygen in contact with the circle; not fire. The gloves are made of specialized material that creates a spark when it’s rubbed together. He snaps his fingers to make a spark, like with flint and steel, and uses his alchemy to concentrate the oxygen in the air around that spark, toward his target in a line, and into a condensed bubble at his target’s position. Oxygen is everywhere, so if he touches any with his transmutation circle, he can manipulate oxygen at a great distance, and set it alight at will with a snap of his fingers. It’s terrifying how powerful flame alchemy is, and all it entails is reshaping clouds of oxygen at will.

Fun fact: The animation of Lust burning against Mustang's fire was animated by legendary animator Yoshimichi Kameda. He is famous for using heavy ink brush strokes in his animation cuts. 17:18 Gonna come down on this hard; the location of the Oruboros tattoo has no relation to the location of the Philosopher's Stone within the Homunculus' body. If you remember, Bradley repeatedly cut off Greed's hands, whose tattoo was on the back of his hand, and Greed regenerated from his body, not from his hand. The Stone is always at their core. Also, Ed has said earlier that a Philosopher's Stone is "perfect material", as they are supposed to be conventionally indestructible. The only way to destroy a Stone is to burn up all the energy of the souls contained within it. Even if Riza had shot the Stone, it wouldn't have worked.

One interesting change from the manga; originally, the revelation of the previous episode (that Mustang had faked Ross’s death) came *after* the events of this episode. This is, in fact, the chronological order of things, since the trip across the desert took quite a while. I’m glad the anime changed the ordering. Another cool fact about this episode: Arakawa has said she made Jean Havoc a smoker specifically so he would have a lighter on hand for the events of this episode.

In the manga, when assuring Havoc that Lust had been blown to ashes, Roy explains that when a body is burned, the fat deposits disperse into the air, and it makes it lips get sticky from it, which is his tell that the person has been completely incinerated. Ishval left him with some pretty macabre knowledge.

Two things I took from Barry's soul and body dying (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong); 1. Despite Barry cutting up his body, it somehow survived. So it seems no matter what happens to an empty body it'll survive as long as the soul still exists, which is also shown with Barry's body decaying but still able to move on its own. 2. Barry's body intentionally destroyed the seal to finally kill itself. Being alive but without its soul probably felt like torture for it.

Looking forward to the death of the Lust simp counter and the birth of the Mustang simp counter!! I think it's worth noting that in an interview the author of the manga this show is based on said she made Havoc a smoker for the sole purpose of giving Mustang access to a lighter during his encounter with Lust, cause that tiny detail was the only believable way she could have Mustang win. That is the level of attention to detail and long range planning that was put into this story, and on rewatch it REALLY shows.

Kenny has the idea of the philosopher's stone down pat. Philosopher's Stones are like batteries. A battery runs out when it loses charge. Philosopher's stones are powered by souls so it also runs out when it is out of souls to fuel the alchemy. So in essence, Philosopher's stone still follows the law of equivalent exchange. But you don't see the exchange because souls are being sacrificed to do the alchemy. So no matter how potent the philosopher's stone, it will eventually run out. Also if episode 19 is one of the best action and thriller episode, episode 20 is THE episode for lore, heart and thematic elements. Episode 20 is one of my most favorite episodes of the series. And believe it or not, both of these episodes WILL get outclassed by future episodes. That's just how good the writing is

I don't know if you remember from when Marco was talking about the stone but it's capable of changing its state making it more or less physically and vulnerable. You can't smash it. So even if mustang had tried to destroy the stone after he ripped it out of Lust's chest it wouldn't have worked because the stone can't be destroyed that way

The form of the philosopher's stone is a pointless detail, because the stone itself is made from human souls, the point being to destroy a philosopher's stone you'd need to break down the composition of a human soul. The only real way to theoretically destroy a philosopher's stone, any other way is just mistaking the philosopher's stone for an actual stone.

I've seen a few reactors think of destroying the Philosopher's Stone as a way to kill the homunculus, but miss the point. One thing to note is that to destroy something the material it's made of is what's important, i.e. adding a little carbon to iron will turn it to steel and make it stronger but adding too much carbon will just make it brittle and easier to destroy. The Philosopher's Stone can be in any form we only really see them as stones, and with just Marco as liquid too. But the point made is that the actual form of the Philosopher's Stone is a pointless detail as they are made of human souls, so standard destructive measures don't work. Supported under the idea that Philosopher's Stones are made of a perfect substance and are thus unbreakable. So in this case, exhausting the energy inside led to it's destruction. Theoretically, though, if you could break down the composition of a human soul, you could destroy the Philosopher's Stone.

This is a HUGE episode. So let’s get into it. Barry the Chopper was having the same primal instinct as his body was. Had he successfully killed his body, there’d be no where for the soul to belong/return to. And the body had decayed from malnourishment. So both would have died anyways. Because Barry was at the point of needing to be dead. And for him to be sorry he disobeyed Mustang’s orders, and completely put his allegiance to Mustang…that’s one hell of a turn for a psycho murderer. But, he ultimately didn’t deserve a 2nd chance for what he had done with no remorse. No remorse being the key factor. It’s good he did what he did ultimately, but he remained a monster. A philosopher’s stone actually more comes from damaged surface area. A soul can be used to replace body matter. That’s why guns will never kill a Homunculus. And the stone itself is perfect material and likely wouldn’t shatter even if shot. If you tear off an arm, that’s a whole arm that needs to be replaced. And that’s a lot of matter to replace. Which is why Mustang is literally perfect to fight Homunculus. And I love seeing you guys simp over Lust the whole show thus far, only for you to be horrified by her in death as she dies completely undesired. Talk about a good twist of your emotions there. Pretty sure Mustang makes the areas he hits hydrogen gas to ignite the air better when he snaps. So Lust DID give him materials he could work with for transmutation. Al makes the same pact as Ed because ultimately both aren’t trying to reverse their taboo for themselves but their brother. Al wants Ed to be back, and Ed wants Al back. (At least to a point.) And I love that Winry gives the same vibe as Al gave to Ed when Scar defeated them. Maybe accepting death is bad, but looking for a situation that can cause it is equally stupid. And Hohenheim has arrived. I’d say he is judging you, but let’s be honest. He already finished judging you. You have been judged.

Mustang's flame alchemy works the other way around; he alters the oxygen concentration in the air, and then uses the spark gloves to ignite it. But since he was working with water, he could pull the oxygen from it and generate hydrogen.

They make a great duo, Havoc and Mustang. Mustang clearly cares a lot about his crew, and I love to see it. Having another friend risk their lives at the hands of a homonculus must make him restless. Knowing he's doing all this to "protect the ones he loves".

When I saw the title of this episode I WANTED to know what your reactions were going to be to Lust finally dying. That is definitely ONE of the best of MANY iconic scenes in Brotherhood. Shows how truly badass Mustang is.

Just wanted to clarify: a lot of people at this point think the philosopher's stone is the homonculi's weak spot. But as we see here, even ripping it out is not enough, and as stated in episode 1, the stone itself is supposed to be "the perfect substance". As long as it's still got power to spend, it will not break by any normal means. So in a way, it's the opposite of a weak spot.

The number of souls in a philosopher's stone is directly related to the energy it contains, which is used up by things like repairing their body, but it's far from 1 to 1. Last had WAY more than 20 souls used to make her gem.

21.21 - fmab is remake of the fma series from 2003. in ep 13 of the original series it explains that mustangs fire alchemy is a two stage proses. first is the circle he uses makes oxygen combustible witch is what he did with water. the second stage is the use of an ignition source witch is normally his gloves witch r made from a special from material that sparks when rub really hard. that y he cant use the when there wet , his fingers just slip n slide against each other and had to genes lighter here

This was the episode I realized Brotherhood was reaching for a higher level. Greed's death wasn't unexpected and it mattered a lot more in 03 with Ed trying to save him, but then Brotherhood killed freaking Lust! 🤯 By the way, best discussion break ever from you guys. 😂

Something important to note, you can't physically destroy the stone. It's a perfect material and can't be damaged by normal means which is why they can't just kill them by hitting it directly.

I don't think it really is, (SPOILERS AHEAD) because I don't think these stones of trapped souls are actually philosopher's stones. Philospher's stones are meant to be ways around equivelent exchange these stones just prepay the price with life force and souls. Also I think along those lines because I have read a lot of real life alchemical lore and there the philosopher's stone is a result of purifying one's own soul and reaching englightenment (actually becomming one with the agent intellect, or as plato would put it the form of knowledge/understanding), hence the name. And that is where the link between the philosopher's stone and perfect substance comes. The closest we get in the series is what father does during the promised day, but it's not relaly right either, the alchemist becomes part of the truth not the truth part of the alchemist. Absolute power but at the price of haivng become one with the universe and hence losing ones individual existance. What would have happened to Al if Ed had not bound his soul back to the mortal world is probably the closest.

Is it taken then and there together with the body, and a philosopher's stone is left in the place the body was, like in this show? When the soul becomes part of the ideal of knowledge (truth?), what does that mean for the people still living? Are alchemists just satisfied being "immortal" in this absolutely inconsequential way? So much for turning lead into gold.

@@NawidN There is a lot left out, and I don't understand quite how the stone relates to the perect sage. It seems that once you go deeper in the lore the stone is mentioned less and less and the perfect sage is mentioned more and more. Also immortaliy is not mentioned in the context of eartlhy immortality but in the concept of the soul living on after death and the whole turning lead into gols i really more about th soul becomming golden. I think it may just be a dichotomy about what the alchemists were really pursuing and what laypeople thought they were pursuing. But then on the other hand we have Flammel who suposedly created a stone so... The problem with the work of the real life alchemists is that it's all written not just in code but in allegory so it's pretty much impossible to tell what they actually meant. It possible the stone may have ben an allegory or a red herring in the original texts in the east while it was taken to be an actual object when the ideas transferred into reinassance europe.

Maybe it just hit me different but u can’t believe it took them all the way until now to get hooked with the show and start seeing how great it is. By ep 4 I already thought it was one of the best shows. No show could ever create an emotional response as strong as ep 4 gives in so little time. And its a story that haunts me to this day (and the characters until the very end).
