Drove a 62 in PA for a few years, winter not so fun. We had one of these and a 69 VW van...6 of one etc..My G Grandmother actually won the 62 in a promotion, she drove it for 2 years and it sat for 20 because the fan belt kept popping off. Believe it or not after the 50th time that damn belt popped off, I drove it to a junk yard in perfect shape and sold it to them with 80,000 miles on it for 35 dollars.

I got a valve cover from the salvage yard and cut it in length wise, this is a service too so you can adjust the valves and slow down the oil splash when adjusting valves.

Wonderful project. You're doing a great job. The headliner is not that bad if you get on from Clark's. Should do the dash, windshield and headliner the same time. Usually lots of rust in the pinch weld, that can be repaired with the windshield removed.

Seeing some of the shots in the video showing the shape of the quarters and the body lines of the car makes me want to own one. I hope you go all the way and give that car what it deserves; a full body restoration. GM cars of that era were in my opinion the pinnacle of automotive beauty with the simplicity and flowing lines.

Enjoyed your video on the Corvair. My first two cars were Corvair back in the 60. Second one was and engine rebuild were the valve seat fell out of head. Great memories. Big error I made was not repacking rear wheel bearing before putting on highway for extended trip.
@andrewreece38613 жыл бұрын
Those graphite exhaust packings are kind of soft compared to the original (asbestos) donuts. When you install new packings, make sure the manifolds ports and head tubes are all clean, and after lining up the manifold and getting it loosely clamped on give the manifold a few raps with a dead blow hammer to seat everything. It’s very normal to need to tighten the bolts up again after getting some heat cycles in them, so if you’re using French locks on the clamp studs, leave them unbent until the second time you tighten them. Nice work on the rebuild. Subscribed.

I took notice of the comment you made about the amount of heat you got from the heater. Most likely you need thermostats. That's right! Thermostats. There is a flap on the underside of each side of the engine. If you look inside, you will see a rod that leads to a brass colored device that looks like a bellows. This is a thermostat. They control the air flow through the engine to regulate the engine temperature. When they fail, the flaps fall open and let uncontrolled air flow through the engine resulting in a cooler running engine, and the heat going out the rear of the car instead of through the heater.

I liked this series. It got me interested in your channel. I've heard that the Corvair could have become the American Porsche had Chevrolet stuck with it, and didn't worry so much about V8's. I think it would be great if you worked it to get more power, and maybe a 5-spd along with beefing up the suspension. Thanks! What's next?
@AutoAnatomy2 жыл бұрын
It would have been neat to see what another 50 years of engineering and advanced technology could have done to this car. As for plans, I have a few people interested in purchasing the car so it will likely be sold in the next few weeks. I'd love to find another one sometime (maybe a wagon or rampside truck) and keep it longer. Or...find another coupe and make a race car! What do you think?

It would probably be too tall to fit under the hood. If you were going to swap the engine, something like a Subaru engine would be more appropriate, since it’s a boxer configuration
