The Battle of Nicopolis took place on 25 September 1396 and resulted in the rout of an allied crusader army of Hungarian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Wallachian, French, English, Burgundian, German and assorted troops (assisted by the Venetian navy) at the hands of an Ottoman force, raising of the siege of the Danubian fortress of Nicopolis and leading to the end of the Second Bulgarian Empire. It is often referred to as the Crusade of Nicopolis as it was one of the last large-scale Crusades of the Middle Ages, together with the Crusade of Varna in 1443-1444.

Something quite significant here is that Stefan Lazarevic, the senior most Serbian noble and leader, fought shoulder to shoulder with the Ottomans against the Crusaders. His heavy Serbian cavalry played a significant part in the victory and had to do it all over again only 6 years later in the Battle of Ankara against the forces of Timur the Lame. Study history to understand how complex the world is so that it may encourage you to look beyond the surface and fall in the trap of the "obvious".

im not quite sure if everybody understood this scene, only if you are a romanian, because is a romanian film. what the director had in mind was that to show the arogance and childish of westerns crusaders. they traveled up to eastern europe just for glory, not defending the cristianity. they wanted to be them whom will beat the ottomans, and they didnt respected the plan, and because of this they lost the batle. romanians fought for indepence, defending the cristianity, but not the same the westerns crusaders. ottomans had in mind to counqer everithing what was in their way to rome. but they got stucked in balkans. the biggest empire at that time had been stoped by few small, non-significant countries, like wallachia, serbia, moldova.

He had to retreat, so much is correct. But not before he killed tens of thousands of Turks. Only the number of those he impaled during that campaign was 20 thousand. 14 years later he came back on the throne only to die in battle. The Turks cut his head from his corpse on the battlefield just to have a proof that he was dead. He definitely wasn't impaled.
