initially they are the best warriors in the expansion of islamic sultanates. It's just like the best commandos in modern army. but after so long times, so wide areas, its starts corrupted. some explained its internal conspiracy by internal administration in the new territories. the central power loose control at the far territories. later it spread and become worsen and exploited by the enemies to weakened the sultanate power. at the end the sparks rebellion among young generations because this group control by certain group or clan, and starts independence movement among other muslim territories.

At that time, every family had many children and families gave their children voluntarily because they had more chances and duration of life in the Ottoman Empire.
@fanthony
@fanthony 29 күн бұрын
That sounds delulu. Balkan Christians to this day carry resentment and bitterness for the stealing of their children by Ottomans in order for them to be raised as Muslim warriors and return to oppress the very people that they hail from. I wonder if you would feel the same way if Israel took away Palestinian children and raised them as Jewish IDF soldiers, so that they can keep subjugating the Palestinians. Could we then characterize that as Palestinians having many children and so they donated some to the Israelis so the kids can have a better chance at life?

It can be said that Sokullu (Sokolovic) Mehmet Pasha is the most well-known and respected among the Ottoman grand viziers. He was a Janissary and was educated at the Palace school due to his superior intelligence and abilities. He served as grand vizier during the reigns of Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II and Murat III. He was married to the daughter of Selim II. One of his brothers was the high priest of the Serbian church. His father and other siblings became Muslims. They lived in Istanbul. He was one of the most influential and successful statesmen in the world of his time.

Keep in mind that Ottoman Empire was the only major empire where a slave boy could have the chance to raise to become even Grand Vizier, who is second in power only to the Sultan. When Christian boys are harvested, the most intelligent ones were being sent to Enderun school which was providing the highest quality of education in the world at that time. Upon graduation, they were accepting high profile roles in the empire, and could even become Grand Viziers. Therefore knowing this, many Christian families were actually sending their boys voluntarily to the Ottomans where they would have a much better chance, rather than rotting at the harsh farming fields, fighting with infectious diseases and enduring raids from neighouring villages and countries etc.. And those not selected for Enderun, were being sent to Janissary Corps to be trained as hard core combat units in the empire and would become 'Kapikulu', i.e a kind of personal guardians of the Sultan and was only answerable to the Sultan. They enjoyed many privileges which were not necessarily available to other subjects of the empire.

@@lonelywolf1480 The White slave owners had similarly good reasoning for separating Black children from their parents. Black children being 'harvested' by White slave owners for the betterment of the slaves, better food, they could even gain their own freedom and become slave owners themselves. What a magnificent future they must have looked to ! I hope others who read this can see the absurdity of your arguments when you argue like this
@lonelywolf1480
@lonelywolf1480 21 күн бұрын
Mate that is a poor analogy. We are not talking about just free foods and freedom here. Janissaries enjoyed privileges that were not enjoyed by other members of the empire. Also, were any black slaves given access to an excellent education system, and had a chance to become prime ministers (similar to Grand Visiers)? Janissaries had to power to even dethrone the Sultans. Any example of black slaves having the power to change the presidents?

I appreciate the attention given to the Ottoman Empire but, am concerned as many of your specific examples are vague and have no given supporting evidence. I love the work being done, but there seems to be quite a few inaccuracies. The biggest example of this is the claim that “Over the years, the fear of the Janissaries in Europe grew to such an extent that even the sight of their red uniforms was enough to make enemies retreat” followed by the claim that the “Germans” found themselves helpless against French attacks and supposedly asked for Ottoman assistance. This claim made me excited as it would have established one of the earliest contacts between the Ottomans and an early precursor to the German Empire. I could find to sources backing up your information in German, French, Turkish, or English. Moreover the map is horribly inaccurate depending on when in the 19th century you are referring to. There are too many mistakes to include them all here, but the biggest one is that the German Federation which is not synonymous with the German Confederation and the depicted Kingdom of France which I believe you meant the Empire of France (entirely different political entities) if you have sources proving me wrong, please provide them as I am extremely interested in finding the source of your information.

Yep, Janissaries were not the most prominent and heavy weight armed units in the Ottoman Empire. They were the 'Sipahis'. When Turks go to military service, it's ok, but another citizen of Ottoman Empire taken for service it is cruel? What logic is that? All those nations you mentioned were citizens of the empire and they served their country. Turkish kids or Arab kids were also taken for service in early ages. Nothing different.

what kind of propaganda is this? janissaries were the elite corps of the empire and highly privilaged, more than turks. bulgarians didnt rebel much until 19th century, and janissaries got dismantled by that point. and no, any empire that existed had more antihuman systems. devshirme actually made way for villagers and poor children to become pashas and elite officers, unlike arabs or kurds. and only one child was taken among 40 families.

Okay, where were those Janissaries when Tamerlane devastated ottomans in 1402 and took captive of their mini-sultan? If janisaritas were so cool, why ottoman kings never dared to face Timurid army until the 1450s and kept calling themselves Timurid vassals? Please, tame your "turkish fandom" and look at the facts without red-tinted glasses

Laughing is the only thing that u can do unfotunetly my friend. But my advise to you is to do it while u are all alone to avoid the shaming urself infront of people. Jannisaries were the first well orginized, perfectly trained regular standing army in Europian history. And the answer to your example is simple. The defeat from Timur in the battle of Ankara was cuz of the elephants which were chained to each other in charge against the Turkish army which was a brilliant tactic to be honest and must be honored. When it comes to a hand to hand, muscle to muscle pitch battle, sorry again but there was no unit or army can easily match against Janissaries especially between the 14th and 17th century. Pointing out your comment is one thing but a sarcastic and mocking way of pointing it out will only make us to think that you are not older then 12 or 13 years old. Either grow up and behave the way of your age demands or try to read and learn more.. And more important then all, don't say anything about a subject that you don't know about well. Cheers ;))
