Mutable Instruments Grids 2/2: Advanced Settings

The MI Grids produced three channels of drum (or other) triggers with manual and voltage control over the underlying rhythm pattern and how many hits per measure are produced per drum channel. This video describes each of its advanced settings, including control over clock in, triggers out, and even access to an alternative Euclidean sequencer mode. Great demo, the only real Tutorial for this very complex Module. after having and using it for almost 2 years in a very minimalistic way, , now i understand what i have :)

Just a curiosity about using OUT's accent use of GRIDS (around 2.40m). The out is routed to the EXT input of Roland SYSTEM-500 540 to control the emphasis's dynamics of the patch. I could do do the same thing on the LEVEL input of a Dual ADSR Intellijel? It would be interesting to explore alternative uses of the OUT accent. Thanks in advance for the tutorials. I follow you:)

I'm using the Accent to trigger a second envelope, and then mixing the two envelope outputs together. The Accent pulse may be too short to be useful as a CV for Level.

When using the Euclidean sequencer mode, does Grids allow the user to shift/rotate the beats within each channel/pattern?

No - I wish there was. That's an important feature if you want Euclidean sequences to truly match some world rhythm patterns. For what it's worth, Mutable Instruments describes Grids as a "plain vanilla" Euclidean sequencer, and it is a semi-hidden mode; I think you'd have to look at other modules for more flexibility there.

That's a very good idea. There are a lot of gate delays based on time; which ones will allow you to dial in a set number of beats? Using a shift register would certainly be one solution.

2hp Euclid does have shift. I wonder how Grids could be patched to shift, as I far prefer the size and ergonomics of Grids.

As I understand, it can generate only short triggers? And not suitable with adsr envelopes?

Correct. That's why I now have modules that can extend trigger times. In my gigging case I have the Erica Pico T->G (trigger to gate), and in my studio case I have a Doepfer dual trigger delay which also allows you to set the desired gate length.

What do the accent outs do when in Euclidean Mode?

The Grids manual says "In euclidean sequencer mode...The ACC outputs will spit a trigger on the first note of the pattern - that is to say, whenever the pattern completes a cycle." I've not tried it myself.
