You have a few common misunderstandings. 1) GDP growth is neither infinitely possible nor necessary. The only reason why GDP growth is "good" is because inflation devalues the currency and a stable GDP actually means getting poorer. The reasons for inflations are that it helps the government paying back debt by stealing from the poor (low wage workers get a deflating currency which means their wages go DOWN every year). Therefore current GDP growth is not "good", it is a sign that we base our economies on a fundamentally broken and exploitative system. Look at history, stable economic systems without any inflations are the best for overall prosperity. In such a system, GDP growth can only be possible by technology increasing efficiency and population growth, which both are finite. With a stable currency and a stable population, GDP growth can only be minimal, because it is only driven by advances in technology. But that is not a bad thing because people can accumulate wealth instead of constantly getting poorer. 2) The reason for lower birth rates is not to a significant degree related to living costs. The strongest driver of declining birthrates are feminism/gynocentric societies (South Korea & Japan are prime examples), female education and women entering the workforce. The longer a woman spends in education or working, the less likely she is to ever have children. It's obvious. At 30, women have used up 90% of their eggs. So if you spend pursuing a masters degree until you're 28, you barely have time left. It's stupid and societal suicide to encourage women's education.

I don't think youth giving up is limited to China. I'm hearing about quiet quitting, giving up on life milestones, and not marrying / having kids around the world. The younger generations around the world feel that their dreams are out of reach and there's no hope for the future.
@davisutton1
@davisutton1 Ай бұрын
You are correct. In large part the Boomer generation grabbed the best of everything and now, across the world, younger generations are giving up en masse. It is too easy to say China bad, West good or vice versa but the effects described here are far more ubiquitous than many assume. We have become so tribal that "China bad" must entail "USA good" and it simply doesn't. This development involves a deep level of incoherence and ignores the more general social and economic malaise effecting younger generations.

@@davisutton1have you read what you wrote, you are blaming everyone else for your problems, the boomers look everything that was good, just that comment alone is ridiculous, at the start of the boomers generation we had high prices, low wages on everything, polio, whooping cough and quiet a few other diseases to content with, while the cold war loomed over us until glasnost happened to russia, the difference between the generations is we didn't blame the previous generation while bemoaning our fate, we just got on with it
@cho4d
@cho4d Ай бұрын
@@infidel202 you are taking it personally. it's nothing personal. it's a matter of history. boomers have absolutely gotten the golden ticket. your houses exploded 10x in value at a minimum. you could afford a house and support a family and have a great standard of living on a single income. now, for the first time in history, pensioners have more disposable income than the working age adults (at least in the UK, i don't know about other places). Boomers went through school/college/uni for free, then put their children in to life ruining debt because boomers vote in their own self interest (as do all people). This is just the stuff i can remember off the top of my head. If you care to (i am assuming you don't) do some research you will find a lot of information out there about this phenominon.

@@infidel202 there's a reason younger people feel that way. It's hard to get a job that pays well nowadays, either low wage one or be in debt to open up a business. Also even if they save up to buy a house in the cities, they will be in more debt (prolly until they die). So what they do? They do quiet quitting. And the older generation will see them as the lazy one. Also, I know some older generation who think the younger one are able to get a lot of money because the world already connected, but the reality is there's a lot of em struggle to pay the monthly rent.

As a Chinese international student studying in Hong Kong, I’d like to clarify the term "Bai lan. 摆烂" While it does suggest a sense of giving up to some extent, on the Chinese internet, it's often used in a more lighthearted or joking manner. Although the trend reflects the pressures that young people are facing, it doesn't carry the strong sense of rebellion that this video seems to suggest. The video portrays it almost as if it's part of an ongoing protest, implying that young people are truly giving up on life. In reality, it's more of a humorous way of saying that life is tough and we're jokingly 'giving up' on small things.

Taxes themselves can be used to lower housing costs, whenever enough people decide to use them better. Edit: There are more than two ways in which this is true, but two in particular are especially strong. A tax collected from the unimproved value of land-essentially “recycling” it-is a direct counterweight to housing prices. When land value is taxed, that taxation itself pressures the landowner to bring in enough revenue to at least make back what gets collected. At its fullest, the tax ensures profitable land can only be made profitable if it is fully tapped into without waste or inefficiency, effectively tying supply with demand. When people take notice of the widespread, expensive, and often fruitless or ridiculous government subsidization of certain companies to entire industries there’s a popular idea that we should be subsidizing _people_ more than corporations. This one isn’t quite what you’d call a tax at all (although it takes after the name of one it is the inverse of), but it does exactly that. The negative income tax, as proposed by Milton Friedman, would have replaced all other social welfare spending using income tax revenue to plug the gap between household incomes and the threshold for eligibility.

This entire story reminds me of the US's industrial age and the Great Depression, which was when factories became popularized, and then everyone fell into poverty. The story begins with tons of people gaining jobs in the US because of industrialization, thinking it was a good thing until they realized their wages were inadequate, and they couldn't afford anything. Rich people became too rich and wouldn't spend any of it, causing deflation of prices and factories losing money because nobody would buy their stuff. This led to factories laying off workers because they didn't want to lose money. Then, even fewer people bought stuff from the factories, causing more people to get laid off.
@firetreeman
@firetreeman 11 күн бұрын
That's not how the Great Depression happened. The Great Depression was caused by the stock market thriving that led people to borrow money they couldn't repay. So, when a minor recession occurred, investors started to panic and sold their shares, leading to a crash. This resulted in many people being unable to repay their loans. Subsequently, the banks failed as they didn't receive their loans back, causing people to lose their savings. Overproduction also was a major cause as factories and farms produced more goods than could be consumed, causing deflation and prices to drop.

This isn’t just in China. Young people around the world are losing hope. I left my parents, age 19. I worked hard, at min.wage job & hustled side job when I could. I paid for by first college degree, and got a better job. Then, I paid for 3 other college degrees and became an RN. I never had credit card debt, or spent my hard earned money on things I couldn't afford. I saved my money and paid cash fir 2 acres of land, & mortgaged a mobile home, and paid it off early in 5yrs. At age 35, and I was late to start this, but I started a oth IRA, best investment ever..... Anyway, just trying to help... Wish you all the best. It's really all up to You, which way your life goes.

It's more difficult to define in the US since the American dream is to buy a single family home, not an apartment (unless it's a big city life then maybe). Homes cost a lot more than apartments but one can start quoting apartment prices to skew results. Also most of America's newer cities are massive urban sprawls so the further out, the cheaper it gets usually. Southern california is notorious for this - cheaper homes in the desert but ridiculously crazy anywhere along the coast.

@@Uta_193 Kamala is current VP. Making hefty promises about securing the border which shes already in charge of, and has been for the past 3.5 years. I don't see her doing anything about anything. But go ahead, elect her into the top seat. I'm sure that'll motivate her to actually do something useful.

China is a huge country, yet most people still live in the false belief that China is prospering more than ever.
