Tankers from 89, 60, 52, and 58 dump their tanks into two different porta-tanks, which the water was then flown out into the woods by Engine 89-1 in a "rural water supply" drill.

It *may* serve a secondary method of observing the water level, but the primary reason is to keep air from being introduced into the draft by plugging up a whirlpool if one forms. The whirlpool will introduce water into the suction, causing the vacuum and prime to be lost. books.google.com/books?id=-H6HCgAAQBAJ&pg=PA296&lpg=PA296&dq=beach+ball+draft+whirlpool&source=bl&ots=_7ykHJRwVX&sig=0hGDtSCvpHW8H7_bSCpDz85T_IQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjovsSNq73YAhWr7IMKHaySDTsQ6AEITzAJ#v=onepage&q=beach%20ball%20draft%20whirlpool&f=false

That first tanker had some old 1970's hard suction on it. I am in a small rural dept with not a lot of money, yet we have all new style light weight hard suction. The old stuff you cannot use, its too heavy and impracticable.

curious, when these have to return to where they fill up, about how long does it take to Normally fill up one of these trucks? per the description in the title, it says that after the tanks were filled, it then says that the water was then FLOWN out into the woods, I guess your saying that there was more hoses that were going from the tanks out into the woods, to wherever the fire was located, is that correct, when I saw the word FLOWN, almost thought for a second you maybe meant by plane or possibly Helicopter........

It's a drill, and I assume the water is being dumped into the woods and away from the road.

I have watched a lot of news footage lately of the Australian wildfires. I wonder if the fire service is getting all the equipment they need to win the battle. Do fire department tankers ever dump the water near to or directly onto wildfire flames? If for example a fire department water tanker is driving down a dirt road in Australia, their is fire on either side. Would they open the valves and let the water out as they are driving along? The speed at which the water is emptied out of tankers in this video is impressive. I am wondering if it would do more good or bad if it was released directly onto wildfires. Most of the news footage I have seen shows fire fighters using individual hoses. Obviously the flow of water is slower that way.

That would be a very ineffective use of Water. In wildland firefighting (at least in Germany) we usually use the smallest hoses available, because we mostly have groundfires and there is not much water needed to put out a groundfire. If it is already in the trees, clearing a fireline or soaking non burning trees with heavy foam is what sould be done. In Austraila the situation is different, as they have far more land, far fewer people, and the ground there needs fire to work, for instance, there are seeds wich can only plant new trees if they are burned, so austrailian departments mainly use water to secure buildings and infrastructure. Also a lot of diging is done there, as fire needs fuel and the fuel can be removed with saws and shovels without ever needing a single drop of water. Dumping a whole tanker would be a huge waste of water, and i don't know if Austrailia even has these kinds of tanker, Germany has none, our tankers require hoses to pump from tanker to engine, but they are mostly used as a first attack water supply until a hose line from a hydrant has been established (wich is not a big problem here, as there are usualy hydrants every few hundret meters in cities and villages, and we don't have many rural areas as remote as in the US or Australia).

I know this comment is three years old, but I figured I'd reply for anyone that comes across this and might be wondering the same thing. As Thoughtfox2409 pointed out a couple years ago, simply dumping the water in bulk as it's doing in the video would be ineffective and wasteful, simply because the volume of water isn't spread out. That's why aerial tankers dumping either water or retardant work, is because it's a high volume, but it's spread out over a large area. However, there ARE water tenders (Tankers, depending on which part of the world/country you're in. Tenders=West U.S. and other places, Tankers=Central/East U.S. and other places) that are outfitted to also act as brush trucks. My department has a newer water tender that actually has a large pump that can suction water from static sources, and can also act as an engine/brush truck depending on the usage needed. The only real downside to this, is weight. A water tender with a 2500 gallon tank like the one my department has configured has nearly 21,000 pounds of just water weight, not including the truck. With the truck, it can be upwards of 50,000 or heavier when fully loaded, depending on the tank size. Not including the water tenders that are tractor-driven, the heaviest you'll realistically see is 65,000-70,000 pounds fully loaded. This is a huge risk off-road, at least compared to a standard large (Type 3) brush truck, which weighs on average about 25,000-30,000 pounds fully loaded. TLDR: It's uncommon to see a water tender utilized as an attack apparatus, however many departments have configured their tenders to do exactly that. Why? Simple: Redundancy can save lives.

We try to circulate the water in the tank with the trucks built in pump as much as possible when at a scene on a below freezing day/night. Tank to pump, and then apply a bit of pump to tank as needed.

I love how the left coast thinks their shit don't stink, thinking that they are elite or way better than the rest of the fire departments in the United States. The only thing the left coast is good for is to spend money on illegal aliens instead of taking care of its citizens.
