Hey there Muttnchop Piper! My grandfather passed on and left me a bunch of old Meerschaum pipes from the 1950's and earlier. They are wonderful and well seasoned. Inside the kit of pipes he left a letter with tips on smoking and one was "The Church Organ" - it's very similar to your Breathe Method! His method specifies "Clench pipe in mouth and close mouth. Breathe in through nose half breath, then at the same time, breath the rest of your breath through both nose and pipe, with a gentle sucking force. Blow smoke out of mouth. Inhale again but don't draw any smoke from pipe, and when breathing out, breathe out through nose and pipe slow and gentle at the same time with the last part of breath". Very cool and kind of advanced, but he was an Opera Singer so makes sense!

I discovered Mutton's videos on the breath method too early to appreciate the significance. The benefit of this extends beyond just having a cool and flavourful smoke. I thought there would be a trade off where the pipe would smoke nicer but go out more. In fact it's the exact opposite. I'd spent a lot of time perfecting the pack and light but my pipe still wasn't smoking well and I couldn't understand it. In particular the ember was burning down the middle of the bowl, with charred tobacco left around the edge, and loads of dottle at the bottom. Turns out I was smoking it wrong. It is possible to over complicate this and make it too technical. The key point is that the way you should draw on your pipe is long and gentle and slow. Pull gently for about 5 secs and breathe through your nose whilst you are doing it. That will get the bowl to smoke really evenly and all the way across the edge of the bowl. Smoking slow will also allow the dottle to dry out as the ember approaches. Now I get lovely cool, flavourful smokes with next to no dottle, and no relights. Draw long and gentle. Pulling air in fast and short will make the tobacco burn itself out rather than spreading evenly to the adjacent tobacco. Thanks Mutton!

@@Gentleman8astard what does breathe means to you ? I bet you still do not understand how it should be done. You have to breathe normally through your nose and pipe in the same time. Do it right and you will see.👍

@@vintagepipesnightmares no it doesn't.
@legalvices3 жыл бұрын
@@vintagepipesnightmares No no no no... You breathe through your nose only. in an out through the nose (he actually says that numerous times). The mouthwash action is not breathing in or out through the pipe, it is just swishing the air that is in your mouth around, and as you swish it around, the pressure will force a bit of air out of the pipe and also draw a bit of air into the pipe and into your mouth, but NONE of it goes into your lungs and all of the breather action is through your nose.

Then yesterday, i filled abowl of a hand made pipe( I make my own from local reclaimed timber. The bowl on this one is made from Tasmanian blue gum, my bowls are 1 inch, and a 1/4 deep × 3/4 inch wide for an apple, inch and a half deep x 3/4inch wide for a billiard ) I use a Kentucky, Anatolian blend. Litup, then relit the pipe spent the next 46 minutes mesmerised by my pipe. Nearly went out once, but not quite. By the end, I was amazed and sold. So, muton chop, thank you. Just finished my 3rd ever bowl after listening to this and your lighting video. What a difference. My first 2 were okay (I'm limiting my self to 1 or 2 a week by personal preference and the wife doesn't mind me disappearing if I limit it) had watched a couple of vods and read a bit to get me going, but they lacked taste and left a bit of a nasty after taste - I was taking my time though. Enjoyed just sitting and relaxing with the pipe none the less which was the point of me dabbling, I am an infrequent cigar smoker (too expensive) but I love them and tend to enjoy with my dad and a bottle of something. Had heard pipes are better for just sitting alone as they take a little more attention to keep going. Smoked my 3rd whilst prepping wood for a small fire in -5c so that I kept the pipe in my mouth the whole time and could try your technique. Much tastier, after taste quite pleasant. Only wish I'd been sitting with a beer and really savoured it. Roll on next Friday evening for my next one. Thanks again.

Great vid Mutton! I think the term “mouthwash action” may add its own confusion to the explanation. I would describe the “mouthwash action” as gently puffing…like when you draw liquid through a straw, only in this case you are alternately drawing smoke in and pushing it back out (gently) with your cheeks. You are still able to breath through your nose without drawing smoke into your lungs in the same way that you can draw a liquid (or hold mouthwash) into your mouth through a straw without having to hold your breath.

By the way, occasionally your channel appears in my youtube browser. Let me give to you 2 suggestions. First one - when you set bowl and stem together, turn clockwise, when set apart - in opposite direction. Second - Try 9mm balsa filters, they are much better than coil filters. The principles are still the same: if you don't have the skill to see if a pipe is worth your buck, stick to well-known brands such as Missouri Meerschaum, Rossi (B-series savinelli), Savinelli, Dr. Grabow, etc. If you'd like to try and get an artisanal pipe or a pipe from an "unknown" brand, look at the channel: if the draw hole is lined up with the base of the chamber, and is in the center of the channel, it's usually a good pipe. You should also check for the stem, the finish, and material

Hey, Muttnchop! Now after this explanation I'm confident that I'm doing it correctly. I developed that same tongue (mouthwash) action after learning about breath method from you, but wasn't sure it had to be utilised. Now there are no more doubts. And this is the most complete explanation of the breath method on the Web. You managed to show what seemed impossible to show without using x-ray. Great job! Looking forward to more videos.

This is perhaps the best explanation of ANYTHING, EVER, in the history of explaining things. Well done MCP and thank you!

2024 I have a question for everyone. I have been pipe smoking off and on for about 14 years. I got back into the hobby seriously about 2 years ago. My problem is, for the last 5 pipes I have tried to smoke it went terribly! And I can't figure out why. I have been messing with moisture, packing looser and tighter, tried different pipes and different blends. I tried tamping harder or softer, less or more often. Everything tastes ashy and acidic. I know it's not a sour pipe issue. It has got to be something I am doing that's wrong. Also, it seems like the tobacco is just turning into charcoal and I am blowing out my tongue trying to get it to stay lit. I am going crazy! Have you ever experienced a time where nothing seems to be going right when smoking your pipes? I recently quit cigarettes so I need my pipes to get me by.

Hi there old mate, I’m so happy you are back, you have taught me basically everything I know about pipe smoking. You were instrumental in making me into the pipe smoker I am today! Greetings from down under 🇦🇺
