I had my father ream a 10 1/2 inch , .45 pistol barrel to 1/2 inch. I took a 3 inch, turned piece of hardwood, 12 inches long and stretched a string from one end to the other. By offsetting one end of the string a little more than180 degrees, I was able to mark helical lines and cut two grooves with a Dremel tool and wood carving chisels. This was the way Sylvan Hart did it as Nathan Rahl mentioned in his comment. I only made one pass with my cutting bit before raising it again. I used two small Allen screws instead of shims to raise the cutting bit. My cutting bit was made from a file and was1/8 " wide so six grooves is all I could get on a .50 inch bore. I made that pistol in '78 and sold the rifling device soon after.

I like how you have that rack and pinion to do the twist rate. great setup.

You should look up some old articles on Sylvan Hart. He made his own guns from scratch. He was also the last real mountain man. His guns were beautiful.

This is a long shot but if you are still on this channel i desperately need detailed plans of this im in the works of making my own flintlock and this design seems to be the best iv seen if so comment here and we will figure out a dm thanks you

I think this is the type of thing you might have to design yourself. I’m a machinist and I can offer some ideas for how to set this up, specifically how to figure out your barrel twist. First you want to get your rack and pinion. The 24 tooth gear idea he mentioned in the video is really smart. Measure how many teeth per inch your rack has. For example if it’s 4 teeth per inch, then you have to move that rack 6 inches to get a full revolution of a 24 inch gear. Now if your barrel was 20 inches long and you want, for example, one full revolution of rifling. You need to move that rack 6 inches over a 20 inch barrel. This is how you get the angle of that angled rod, imagine that as a right triangle. One leg is 6 inches and the other is 20, you can use some trig to find that angle or construct a fixture to align that angle. If you’ve already figured it all out, sorry, I just really like to think about this stuff. I know it’s been a few months since your comment. And I apologize if my logic with the math is way off and I might be wrong haha.

I always tought all rifling methods are some types of under pressure cutting, but this is a very smooth method please share the result!

I plan to customize a PCP compressed air rifle, to fire a 762mm (.30) caliber projectile, but I still don't know the diameter of the button goover I have to buy to make the internal flute, and I don't even know which tube ID I should have. buy (which internal measure of pipe should I buy), I'm grateful if you can help me with information

Hi. what material is the cutter body made from? What causes the knocking noise at the end of each strike? Its a very simple but effective machine.
@madhellsing8 жыл бұрын
+Val Martin The knocking noise is from the stop and when the cutter passes all the way through and out. Cutter body is a piece of wood

You can get a rack from off an old flywheel from an engine. Use the starter Bendix as the gear. I plan to build an arbor press from a 60 series Detroit diesel.

barrel made with button cutter you cannot recut the the grooves. Button Cutters make a shallow groove of about 3 thousands to 4 thousands. The barrels I made with my grandfather Bill large we had an average of 10000 of deep grooves
