*Red Balloon* _Music/Lyrics - Mafumafu_ _Art - Tama_ _Movie - MONO-Devoid_ _The you from that day is already gone._ 0:23 This nearly forgotten dream, would disappear in the sky if I opened my hand. If shadows lengthened within the evening glow, night would fall upon the world of children. 0:46 Hey, 「Your name is?」 Tell me yours as well. (Let’s play together forever.) 1:04 Milkweeds slowly sway in tardiness, (1) a floating red balloon. Reeling that fine thread to my side; No matter who would try to take hold of them, it would just make the flowers bloom. 1:51 Using courteous words, and clever gazes, and mature fragrances, (2) We realized that we couldn’t stay as who we were that day. 2:14 It’s just… It’s just that I saw a dream. It’s only that I want to dream. 2:32 That’s a fairy tale; the ending to our childhood days, a prohibited balloon. The right hand riddled with gaps from cuts and injuries; Even if it slips through the crevices, it would just sway along with the wind. 3:18 Saying that we don’t want to grow up, as we sway upon the swing. It’s as if we could fly anywhere, no matter the distance. I was captivated by that long hair, which was even more beautiful than that day. 3:41 Milkweeds slowly sway in tardiness, (1) a floating red balloon. Reeling that fine thread to my side; No matter who would try to take hold of them; No matter whose arm would be tightly embraced, it would just make the flowers bloom. I’m just lonely. (1) Milkweed is a type of flowering plant, named after a milky substance they excrete when their cells are damaged. Their flower language in Japanese is “Let me go” and “Change of heart.” (2) Two words flash in the PV at this part, being “Time” and “Blank” respectively. I didn’t want to add them in because they would mess up the structure of the lyrics. # Please give credit if you are using this for other purposes # Do not change the translation in any way if using for other purposes # Translation made with the help of mafuclub.com/translation/redbulloon/ Some parts may be incorrect since I am not fluent in Japanese, so please write a comment if there are any areas of concern. Please keep this in mind when reviewing the lyrics and making assumptions about the song itself.

I personally think that this song is about childhood regrets, and the boy in this PV is regretting the lost relationship he had with the girl. Within the PV, we see many symbols representing childhood innocence and joy, such as the balloon and flowers, or the paper airplanes and playground equipment. They are painted in a vivid colour to show the wonder that children have and are shown only in the childhood era of the MCs. As they grow up, the background gradually dulls with them maturing and the childish objects disappear, showing the loss of the wonder they used to have. The once childish red balloon is now prohibited. After all, who would play with balloons at this age anymore? The two main characters seem to have lost connection or had a change of heart as the red string of fate shown in the childhood era is not there anymore. Even so, from the lyrics, we can tell that the boy misses the strong relationship he used to have with the girl. There are many parts relating to how he wanted to stay as a child, or not grow up, only to be refuted with the cold truth that no matter what he tried to do, the buds that are children will inevitably blossom into adults, and their childhood wonder would disappear. He can gaze at the paper airplane they played with all he wants, but it won’t bring back that innocence he used to have. Knowing of this, he ends this song on a tone of bittersweet; reminiscing of the times he spent with the girl while regretting that they didn’t manage to maintain that relationship. Why is this song called Red Balloon? Well, as I’ve stated before, both bright colours and childish objects can represent childhood wonder in this PV, and I think that the so called “red balloon” represents said wonder. A balloon is beautiful, free moving, childish, but short-lived. It’s incredibly fragile in the fact that it can be blown away by a single gust of wind or shattered with a single poke on a branch. We all know that a balloon will disappear someday, the same as how we know that we will inevitably grow up to become adults as well. No matter what we do, we cannot stop flower buds from blooming to their full potential. The only thing that we can do with a balloon is to savor the joy and beauty it brings before it inevitably pops. It’s not selfish to want the balloon to live a little longer, or to not even pop at all; I’m sure many have regrets of their childhood days, whether it’s something that they did or didn’t do, or a relationship they didn’t manage to maintain, or an sensation that they didn’t get to experience. It’s a thought that goes through anyone’s mind from time to time. Nevertheless, it’s in the past, and you are in the present. We’re grown up now, right? We can only let go of those regrets. For better or for worse, we aren’t children anymore.

Thank you so much for all your translations! And also for Sharon your thoughts on the songs, they help me interpret the lyrics more easily since I kind of suck at metaphors lol. I, and many other people, appreciate your work so much.

Red Balloon 赤い風船 (Rough Translation) It’ll disappear into the sky if I let my hand go This partially forgotten dream, If the shadows lengthen with the sunset Night will fall, into the children’s world Hey, “What is your name?” Tell me yours too. [Lets play forever] Swaying, swaying, The cotton flower Floating, Red balloon If you tug the thin string Even if someone tries to grab the handle All it does is make the flowers bloom With complicated words With a proper posture (Blank) With a scent of an adult We realize that we can’t remain as our old selves. Just We were only dreaming. We only wanted to dream. That was, A fantasy, The end of childhood Had forbidden The red balloon [Thats enough] If you smoothly pass through This right hand in tatters From the lacerations, All it does is sway in the wind We pushed on the swing with I don’t want to grow up It seemed like we could fly forever to somewhere far I am enamored by your long hair More beautiful than those days Swaying, swaying, The cotton flower Floating The red balloon If you tug the thin string Even if someone tries to grab the handle Even if you hug someone’s arm All it does is make the flowers bloom It’s just lonely ------- These are rough translations going mostly by ear. The better ones are out by dely, so make sure to like theirs too! Balloons represent freedom, and the red string is probably the red string of fate. Some theorized in the comment section that this song represents Mafu’s gradual style change over the years as a double meaning. There has been fans who said “Mafu’s changed” or “I like his old songs better” which isn’t necessarily bad or anything (don’t bash them). But reality is, if he wanted to stay relevant not only as an Utaite but as a full fledged musician, he couldn’t stay in a niche style. Which is why this song is closer to what he wrote years and years ago.
