MVP Aero Light Sport Amphibian

The newly announced two-seat MVP Aero was the big news as AirVenture 2014 opened in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Although it's still in development, the aircraft could fly in as little as 18 months and serve double duty as a camper. In this video, AVweb takes a closer look at the proposed design.

Fantastic Idea. I'm curious as to how they'll keep the weight down with all those extras. Folding canopy, panel and deck, plus thrusters will add some weight.

If this plane can come up in the next few years, I can imagine the endless possibilities I could do with this plane, being that I live in South Florida. I could fly to Lake Okeechobee and put the plane's built in seat to really good use. I could fly day trips to the Bahamas or to the Keys and take a fishing or snorkeling day trip there, which is what I would really like to do. I can also use that plane to travel to places that are a bit too far to drive or you cant drive there because the destination is on an island with no connecting bridges to the mainland, but yet too short and impractical for flying commercial, like to Panama City or to the Bahamas.

Very similar to the Icon A5 but a bit more pricey, and to the people saying that the fishing/camping/camera options are a bit silly, although I do agree, It's something that no-one else is doing, they've got a niche, something no-one else is producing, if someone wants a plane capable if these tasks then this is THE ONLY plane they could consider buying, that's what they're relying on.

+Luke Schofield either way they want way to much frigging money for these things. Way to much! The idea of creating the sport pilot rating was to get more people into aviation. So all the newly developed planes for the sport pilot have ridiculous prices on the. Throwing affordability right out the window. I don't understand why the industry would build or design something that might sell a couple hundred units. And they wonder why they lose their ass.

Really cool concept but it seems like a STOL plane and a dry bag would be simpler although more "rustic" obviously. Really cool concept though. Hope it all works out.

The seat is the same one you sit on while flying; you lift it out and set it on the easily-stored pedestal. The tent, hammock, cooler, and a bag of clothes can all fit behind the seats (respecting weight limits, of course).

My husband is a commercial corporate pilot with thousands of hours and a previous fishing boat captain in his youth (65 Ft. lobster) so as soon as we saw this it has been a non stop discussion on HOW to get one and afford on going maintenance. As we all know boats are holes in the water into which you pour money and planes are holes in the sky that suck up money. Insurance is a concern is there any real solid info about that.

JoJo Kadilihopper No, I don't think it really is. One proof-of-concept aircraft (which ICON refers to as "Engineering Serial Number 1") doesn't qualify as "in production" in my book. The projections I'm seeing are for delivery of the first customer aircraft in May of 2015. I'll believe it when I see it.

i think it has too many junk features. If it is a plane it should be designed as a plane and not as a boat. What the customer ( myself ) would want is more range, more leg room, and the ability to carry bigger payload. Landing on water is a definitely nice but who cares for the unusable chair, or reclining cabin....and yes too much like a copy cat of Icon.....weak...

+Steve Kasian No it hasn't been proven. There is no flying model I could find, just a mock-up for photos & collecting deposits so far. Being a boat designer, I can see right away the C.G. and moment of roll is too high for the beam. In other words as a boat, this would flip over in any kind chop, rolling wake, or small waves. Just look how high the center of gravity is with the wings and the motor; and how narrow the hull is.

It's "100 kt", not "100 kt per hour." A knot is one nautical mile per hour, so if you say "100 knots per hour" you're saying "100 nautical miles per hour per hour." It's redundant.

+Allen Klingsporn -- No, it IS an issue. Ryan O'Connell said "100kt per hour," and I told him there is no such measure. Improper terminology is an issue. He then tried to wiggle out of his error by saying "Usually it's news reporters that come up with knots per hour," but since -- as you point out -- no one on the video said that, and in fact I have never heard any reporter say that -- it's obvious that he was being disingenuous. That's another issue.

Second, Ryan simply misheard the video and was attempting to point out the mistake that didn't exist with his first comment, which isn't disingenuous. Lastly, as an engineering student and former army medic, I fully understand that implications of incorrect terminology, so the preaching is unnecessary. Your communication skills are the only issue here, as Ryan has shown his knowledge of nautical measures by agreeing with your correction.
