I'm amazed it's been running okay with no fault codes! I thought the valve collets might have gone for a walk if we had left it any longer like that.

That last one is a good one to deal with...All the codes are all 1 or 2 occurrences ,But i think the pressurisng is the clue,,,Now on the MY17 the WABCO compressor was a known issue for pressurising the cooling system...So there is that ,It could also have dropped a liner or 2 which again pressurises the system ,,the fact it still has pressure after so many day is impressive ,though had one that had a tiny bit after 6 weeks ...Personally before pulling it apart i would do a quick compression test ..See if it points me to any cylinders...Use the old lap top to its max ,,Even checking the injection during cranking will let you know the state of the fuel system ..but it at this moment isnt fuel ..But hey i dont need to tell you anything,,Even a bore scope down the injector holes will let you see water in the cylinders ,check the oil level etc ...But the pressure is the clue head gaskets if the old multi layer are bullet proof the new one not so ...That customer has some big bills coming ,no cheap repairs there

Hey Norb, thanks for the comment as always buddy! You are my go-to engine man 😅😎👌. I'm going to compression test through the tool and bore scope camera I think. It would be the least amount of bits coming off I think. I've another this week for a different company.....fuel in the coolant 🤔 injector sleeves possibly I think so I will pressurise the fuel system I think....Time to make some adaptors up!

@@TRUCKTECHUK I had fuel in the coolant once..new head...you can make up a hose connect it to the head where you do a leak off pressurise it with air remove to rad hose and you will hear it bubbling away in the coolant...personally I have never known anyone replace injector sleeves .maybe an engineering shop could,,,If both MY2017 have the same part number cylinder heads and both need removing ,you could put the non start vehicles on the broken post one if it is ok and one is back on the road ,,...with the heads of it is a good idea just to pull the followers as they are probably at that age as they do not have bridge pieces jump for no reason and it was the exhaust...I have found over the ones i have done that if the small C clip on the exhaust bridge is missing then that cylinder has an isssue ..You should be able to check cam crank synco on your lap top whilst spinning it over ,,You know what to do anyway , dont need my help

great video, it's always a pleasure watching trucktechUK, especially when you do invasive diagnosis. As for that NO Start, if its not a faulty sensor/ wiring issue, probably something on the gear teeth for crank/cam.

Excellent video 👌 The non starting XF wants me to say it’s internal, with that pressure in the header tank. With that smoke, the knock as she tries to fire, cam/crank correlation fault, also sounded right when you started cranking…. Head? Bent rod? it all seems very suspicious to me, 🫣🫣

Hey benny, all sounds rather bent doesn't it 🫣. I will try a compression test and a bore score afterwards I think. Might give me an idea of what's going on without taking it to 10000 bits

Just had the exact same problem at work as the first XF I am going to say that it will need a new Cam shaft as the lowebs have spun. And have had similar faults for the second XF also a faulty Cam shaft.

Hey Toby thanks for the comment buddy. I think they had borrowed the wheels and wing tops for another truck for test. So slapped the other wheels on to move it out of the workshop. I suppose I'm cheaper than daf when it comes to getting them going 😅

3rd one will be an interesting diag. I havent worked on MX13 before, but the cranking sounds pretty uneven to me, unsure if thats normal. If i was working on this I would be starting a relative compression test with an scope/amp clamp over the starter positive to identify if its a potential mechanical issue. Pressure transducer could be a good option here too. If the relative crank shows up normal I'd be scoping the cam and crank signals to see if they are present/synced properly. Lots of variables on this, especially with the pressure in the cooling system and the codes. Definitely more info needed though, cant wait to see what you find.

Hey, thanks for the comment! Finally, someone who wants to do more with a picoscope and a WPS500! I'd love to go down that road but jaltest will carry out its own compression test (which I believe uses cylinder acceleration) I'd love to use a pressure transducer in the cooling system and sync that to a cylinder waveform for possible head gasket failure if I could, Oh to have the tools to do this 😅. The usual answer I'd get from other techs is just pull it to bits and look! 🫣😮‍💨 I have a 2 channel scope on the van.....if I get a chance I will scope both the sensors and try and do an overlay of the waveforms just for the fun of it 😀

not a truck technician, but pretty interested in diagnosis of it. Does these engine have egr coolers? pressure on cooling system can also be caused by an egr cooler

Hey Sean. It's the best way to be lol they do have coolers buddy. They have what is known as hot and cold EGR systems. As you can imagine the cold EGR systems block up a lot with soot-related issues (see my LF videos for that one 🫣) and the hot ones do not so much but they do suffer from split EGR coolers just not as often as you would think as it would be one of my first go-to's to check.

Ive got a euro 6 CF that constantly reports P0340 hinting at camshaft sensor or wiring. Truck has an extended start (nearly 10 seconds) and is clearly only running on crank sensor. Every now and again it will just cut out, rev counter goes to zero and just cuts out dead and then reports crank signal as faulty similar description. I have the wiring for PCIs and tested the wiring several times and nothing untoward on either sensor. Changed both cam and crank sensors as a matter of course but that was desperation. All grounds to PCI present also. Physically checked the crank and cam signals on a scope, all ok. One thing that seemed to not help matters was that the truck has been cranked so long that theres loads of swarf in bellhousing and it was continuously building up on crank sensor, there truck would always restart after knocking this off and putting sensor back in…..without fail the cam sensor is reported as faulty in either case. Have even checked the reluctor on the camshaft, still good. The pci was sent off for an unrelated CAN fault before and a lot of this seemed to be the case when it returned. Have you ever seen it before? Tempted to get just get another pci from daf and program it on there or get DAF aid to do it. Keep looking for something we havent done but running out of ideas. Like I say all the wiring on the sensors checks out on pins 1,2 and 3.

I've had issues with intermittent Crankshaft signals before and even after a new sensor and wiring to the PCI ecu it would still give faults or cut out. This was an MX-11 and that turned out to be the PCI ecu 😬 I think as long as the sensors in the bell housing and the wiring is okay you only point towards the ECU unfortunately.

Hey Roy, the best thing you can do is give Eclipse Diagnostics a ring and mention my name. They will get a Rep out to you for a free demo and you can have a play with it, get the rep to ring the support line if you want and see how good the remote support is! Eclipse has a few offers on currently like £65 a week. Then you could get the texa rep out and see if you find it simple to use as jaltest and do a comparison of the two 👍

All that pressure in the header tank can't be right, head gasget failure? Also yes it is trying to start but is reminiscent of a poor fuel supply. I know Jaltest would pick that up but I am old school and would be looking for a fractured pipe.

@garysweet9384 it does seem like a head gasket issue 🤔 it will need a bit more investigation mechanically I think. Might scope the camshaft and crankshaft signal or just look for bits of engine parts again

Yes that last mx-13 really isn't happy. I don't think it's electrical, it seems mechanical/hydraulic in some way which I think we will only get to the bottom once it comes to bits...IF the customer wants to go that far with it 😫

Hi. Why are the 31 faults irrelevant.? Also I’ve seen several DAFs recently with active fault codes for DPF status lamp in VIC/SWS but no EML or warnings on & causing no other issues. What’s going on there? Thanks.

Hey Tony, -31 codes are information only codes they dont relate to any actual faulty component on its own. Usually when you look at the description of the fault code it says don't trouble shooting this dtc.

@tonywilson4676 you would have seen it on a daf lf I take it?......daf changed the switches out so you couldn't turn off the dpf regeneration any more. Part of this recall was the new switch and an update if I remember correctly to suppress the DTC on the dash but it remained active in the ecu

It’d occurred to me it might be an update of some sort for it to be present in several vehicles. Thanks for the info. Sounds like that last truck has a blown head gasket or badly cracked head, something is causing it to hydraulic spesh when ya started loosening the header tank cap and it had that amount of pressure just from crankin, nice finger action there too hahah popular with the girls me ole mate?? 🙂

We understand what broke and what pieces need to be replaced,,But your not addressing the actual problem,,Why did they break,,,These are not the sort of parts that just break for no reason,,Because these parts are related to engine timing as it's the cam that operates them ,,maybe it might have something to do with this,,,Untill the main underlying problem is addressed ,,I think they will just break again,,
