I'm not positive, but I think that was Kenny's point; if MX Linux shipped with uBlock Origin added to Firefox, it would be more geared toward Linux beginners. Or, MX Linux could ship with it already enabled. As it stands currently, it is something a new user would need to enable, something that a good amount of computer users wouldn't understand. (Think grandparents and such.)

A really good one. I use the little Brother of this distro called AntiX. Its basically a lightweight, minimalist setup of debian with a modern kernel and preconfigured window manager. No systemd. You can choose between the WMs: icewm, jwm, fluxbox and some other. It makes minimalist linux desktops easy to use, as it comes with his own settings-manager. Even linux-beginners and my boomer parents can use this easily. Antix and MX share much of the same GUI-Utilities and setting-managers. Thats probably one of the reason why MX is so popular. btw.: first!

I've been using MX on my old X220 for about a month. I think it's the best for a no-hassle install on older PCs or ones with shoddy battery life (so most coming out today). I also recently got a newer Thinkpad T14 using the Renoir Ryzen APUs, and on the ahs (advanced hardware stack) it works. Linux Mint, for example, does NOT boot with the default live installation on Renoir. Using the Test repo you can get some newer kernels than what debian is offering. Pretty nice that it allows separate installs for what kind of hardware you have to avoid bloat and a less stable kernel. A few cool things about it: -Does not use systemd by default, but keeps it installed for dependencies. -Probably as a result of not using systemd, battery life definitely beats out Manjaro and even Mint -On the antiX adblocker, after you hit OK it allows you to select multiple methods of modifying the hosts file, and add more yourself. -Has a whole bunch of ways to modify your live installation USB to make multiple installs super easy, like updating the kernel on the live install. You can basically turn the installation media into your current build, applications and all. -Despite being a debian-based distribution, comes with access to Flatpaks and the MX test repo out of the box. iDeviceManager is cool for older iPods mostly, which have been gaining lots of traction due to modding. You've got people putting SSDs in them now. You can easily play with them without having to own an Apple computer. Window's iTunes is terrible and newer Macs don't like these older devices as much.

@@ddg227 there's an MX Tool pre-installed called "Live USB Kernal Updater". Otherwise during the install it allows you to save your live configuration on the USB

we have tested up through iphone 8. but you do have to tell your phone to allow the connection. earlier ios versions did not have the confirmation step.

OK, here's the deal. Thank you for all you do. "IF" you say you're "reviewing" a distro maybe you should take some time to actually USE it for a while. That way you might actually KNOW something about the particular distro. Instead of just installing & taking a little while to look it over. For instance there's a Conky MANAGER in MX & w/ it you can EDIT the Conky or change it to a different Conky. Yes there are some old versions IN THE DOWNLOAD. But when you run the Updater they will mostly be updated to more recent versions. The antx advert blocker is "prolly" like most such HOSTS files so YOU can ADD domains to it. BTW, I've still got to add some to my install. The "bar" on the left is easily moved to the bottom (or the top, or wherever) if that's your preference. It is after all linux. Lastly the MX Tools is pretty cool & has most things you want in that 1 place. I've had problems w/ my install so I'm not claiming it is 'perfect' or 'great' or whatever. But for a 'beginner' level distro I think it is pretty good. It is a Deb-based distro so. BTW, "IF" you are going to play at reviewing distros you may want to take the time to say CONTACT the devs. They may be able to help you get a grip on the peculiarities of each distro. The flash plugin is shipped because I heard people complained that their banking website only works with flash; I know 😢. They are receptive to people in 3rd world countries; thus idevicemounter. You should check out the "MX Tools" they ship, they are in the settings.

With the ad blocker I didn't see you turn it on. You have to ok what to block within the app. If you dind't do that then that may be why it didn't work.

iDevice Mounter works with iPhne 6s and 7 with no problems.I use Mint,MX,Manjaro and Q4os,all have their good points and all have their bad points. MX is stable to the point of boring,it never has thrown a wobble on me me and I have been using it for two years now. I agree that there are some additions that are installed that I don't use and remove,but I could say that about most distro's.

At least Mx Liux has good theming out of the box. The only thing I don't like about Linux Mint is its default theming which is ugly. This is especially not good for a new user who does not know how to add themes in linux. Besides that, Linux Mint is a great beginner distro compared to MX Linux for being familiar to use for windows users.

This distro is at the top because it is the best and have the most to offer in terms of apps and functionality. Well designed by the creators , with excellent forward thinking. Love my KDE version. Now windows is definitely not needed anymore, thanks to this brilliant distro.

I was surprised when I tried out 32 bit Win8.1. It used only 400 MB of memory (600-700 in x64), and that's with all services enabled. Win10 is a whole different story though. With Win10 MS has gone full bloat way.

You should take a longer look. The hardware compatibility is very high, and the live USB tools are ingenious. Being able to run it with systemd disabled is unique. You aren't directed to MX forums because of Google's algorithms, but the forums are busy and helpful. MX goes toe to toe with Artix in my experience.

For those that don't like Ubuntu based and systemD. Peppermint has advert blocker too, but I prefer uBlock Origin because it's better in blocking all ads. MX also has a great and helpful forum.

No, I don't think it's a better beginner distro than Mint. I think it's overrated to be honest. I tried both for months now and went back to Mint. For me, Mint checks all the boxes and seems to be a more time tested solution.

I went from Linux Lite to MX 18.2 and found Kdenlive runs a little better on MX. Went to being my fav out of all the distros. Mint... Went to MX19 and had some issues. Now I'm using Mint20. Lol

ran w/slackware since windows98 died. Self taught w/help from forums, linux books I could stay awake through & of course the Dumb Box substitute KZbin🤣 Thing is when I needed or wanted to explore different things, it was always a huge skills learning project that if I didnt use all the time I would forget how to do. Long story short after my last builds became obsolete & died, I saved up for a couple of yrs to build new boxes. With all the new CPUs, Mobo, & Giant video cards I wasn't able to install Slackware current like I used to, a bios thing w/ new solid state hdds formatting designation. So I wound up w/Garuda LXQT KWin because I want to tryout gaming & context creation. So the i5 12600k is running too hot & that is the box I built strictly for production work👀 So I'm going to try Under volting it, but am concerned aout running a rolling disto on it for stability, don't want to setup & learn all my Software apps more than once or twice, might not have that much time anymore🤣 Ques. can I use mint to setup OBS gimp, DPU ID, Burner, and all else I may need or want? Or stay with Garuda LXqT Kwin?

What's the difficult part of setting up the adblocker? You didn't allow the tool and are not even showing the steps, you're just assuming a beginner is going to have difficulty with it but that's just your assumption.

I used Debian and Arch for several years. Now I use Arch and Gentoo, only because I've been too lazy to move my Arch install over to Gentoo. I've learned stability is in the hands of the beholder. I didn't have any more or less bugs and problems with Arch/Gentoo than I did with Debian. I think distros like MX Linux won't be around as long as Arch or Gentoo, because Arch is insanely easy to use (just because it doesn't have a GUI installer doesn't mean it's difficult) and Gentoo runs on damn near anything.

@@dee23gaming I didn't say anything about which distro is easier to use. I said the Arch Linux installer IS easy to use, because it is easy to use. It's as easy to use as the stupid GUI Debian installer which has two particularly annoying bugs that make it more of a pain in the ass than the Arch installer scripts. So, no. It is NOT like saying swimming across the ocean is easier than swimming across a river. I talked about stability, not ease-of-use.

I can't seem to get that E: DVD download with any Linux distro to make an install usb. Rufus in windows or that damn new Etcher in Linux to make an install usb. Do I need to find my old DVD R/W 5.25 drive and create an install dvd?

Distrowatch ratings are not voted on. They are just page hits. It's more likely a bot nailing their link because there is no way it is most popular. I'm a Manjaro user which is supposedly second place. I love Manjaro but I don't believe that either. I also use Arch and Nomad BSD. Based on the posts at r/unixporn I'd have an easier time believing that Arch is more popular then both of those but none of that can tell us the actual user install base.

You don't have to use Ublock as a alternative to /etc/hosts. This project: github.com/hectorm/hblock really leverages power of the hosts file.

Graphics chug way too much for me to want to use Vbox. I know I'll get spit on for this but VMware just works far better this type of test. I know proprietary software is not preferable but it's a better representation of normal feel with real hardware when set up properly

Styles and what is old and what is not......man I don't get it, think about it. I am so glad that GOD made the world as he did and made it pretty much unchangeable, because if he wouldn't have somebody would have said, "That mountain over there is little dated don't you think" and then changed it. How can you put up the date on the desktop and then say its dated......really. I think that chasing after fashion or what is fashionable is itself dated. There is nothing old or wrong about something that works everything else is just opinion. That's it.

Being a Linux power user, MX all the way for me! Since I discovered alot of very powerful and nifty tools in MX, I will just create read only USB flash MX boot disk with a second writable partition on the USB stick, Load the OS live, and then proceed to tweak and uninstall and install things at will(making sure I have at least 4GB system ram), and then I respin an ISO of the live running system that I can then use to install on the same machine or any compatible machine, but having only the settings and apps I want. For a Media player MX, or for a MX music studio, etc. Vanilla Debian does NOT have all the tools I need in the distro and if it does, it is not setup for me by default and things like sound and so on, tend to fail inexplicably during normal use, so I stick to what works for me, MX. I did manage to do the same trick with ANTIX, but ANTIX is still being a butt with me so I will tackle that beast later lol!
