Can an ADV bike hack it on a motocross track? Honda and KTM’s flagship ADVs face off against their motocross siblings. Watch what happens!
--
Sometimes it seems like Zack and Ari are looking for ways to hurt themselves. When they locked and loaded KTM’s 1190 Adventure R and Honda’s Africa Twin for a test, it made sense-then they added a KTM 450SX-F and a Honda CRF450R. Motocross bikes. There was a lot of head scratching going on around the office, and with the boss out of town, nobody asked what they were up to. When they returned (banged up and grinning like idiots) with this footage, we realized what they were so excited about.

I’ve been riding for 45 years, and that was not a silly thing to do. Not many of us own multiple bikes. Not many older riders are in good dirt-bike shape physically, revealed immediately on the track, and any experienced rider knows that 500 pounds isn’t graceful without exceptional “powers.” Most of us can never compare, and seeing both extreme ends of the spectrum may have turned out as expected, but not silly to see how that came about exactly. I started on motocross, so I have my most feverish recollections about the jump I nailed, or slide I pulled off, etc., back in 1976! So when I mount a bike today, those thoughts are right there...but the bike usually is certainly not. Even on a 300 lb drz400, one needs to be in pretty good shape to handle the demands of standing, flexing, knee-squeezing, etc. that’s required to hustle around in loose dirt or, god forbid, sand. So glad to see two guys, skilled, on the edge of middle age (ha-ha...sorry!) and trying to go to the track on 500 lb bikes with no recent experience. I am really glad you had trouble, and thank you for being so honest about it. Keep up the informative, entertaining, professional, and relevant videos.

HellsSgt I took mine through hell today - pretty technical off-road terrain, and pretty committed - a long walk back out if anything happened...longer crawl - and I was alone. Had to power push it up some sections and loose rocks made some washed out descents downright scary - it’s a mule once it decides on a direction and you have to be pretty damned brave to power it down anything like that. After 6 drops, I’ve removed that piece of real estate from my playgrounds until I’ve picked up a Husky 501 or something smaller. The AT is an adventure tourer - gravel, sand, open space. You have to have the skills and strength to get it through the narrow technical stuff.

You might call it a silly idea, but it really put a spotlight on the weight of the bike and how important it is to riding off-road, and especially for jumping.

Great comparison guys - I ride both a BMW GS and a Honda CRF, I mainly use the GS for touring and seldom purposely take it off-road. It's amazing how many people berate me because I don't take the GS off-road - why would I when I have a CRF in the garage!! Completely agree with your conclusion and a beautifully put together video - thanks for posting and regards from "across the pond" - P.S. Good luck with the new president, whomever he/she turns out to be!

Why do people buy Adventure bikes for touring? I haven't tried one yet but it seems like it's just touring bike with off-road wheels. Aren't they less comfortable, grippy and durable than touring tires?

Well that whole president thing went badly
@serpadu
@serpadu Жыл бұрын
@@ObitoUchihaisgay You can use touring tires in a ADV, and with longer suspension travel, they are more comfortable in bad maintained roads. And if the pavement ends, you can still ride and not be afraid of dropping your bike, because you have crashbars instead of expensive plastic fairings. A GS is a great example that power is not everything, it's surely slower than a s1000xr, but still plenty to go fast and everywhere.

The 1190 looked a bit worse for wear in some shots. Misaligned body panels, scuffs of course, and it looked like the front wheel had a weave in the opening sequence. How about a damage report follow-up? I think replacing broken bits is a big limiting factor for people taking their fancy ADV bikes into the bush, rather than terrain capability.

well 5s slower or even 10s slower than a dirt bike is a compromise i can deal with for something that doesn't have to be serviced every 5 hours and can take me from country to country with comfort. also off roading isn't about jumping and going fast it is about being able too cross obstacles to reach road

ADV bikes are great for their intended purpose, paved roads, sketchy paved roads, gravel roads, dirt roads, sand roads, clay roads, some jeep track here and there, and the OCCASIONAL single track. Obviously the Africa Twin and the Katoom are some of the best on the market for this. Better than my lowly DL1000. :)

I'd actually love to see the "street" adv bikes (Multistrada/S1000XR/Versys 1000 etc) vs sport bikes on a track. I've always been curious just what the difference in corners would be with the same decent rider. Are sport bikes really any faster in corners?

Check out our Multistrada vs S1000XR vid. We rode the bikes from LA to Monterey and then did a track day at Laguna. Those two bikes crushed it. The only rider/bike that passed us all day was a pro racer on his S1000RR superbike. ADVs are pretty amazing. Well... some of them anyway.

Thanks Ari, I watched and I'm a little jealous. Looks like all you really lose is some aerodynamics and higher gearing for top end speeds which aren't useful on the street.

Lorentz the difference between an S1000XR or Multistrada and Sportbike is certainly not the same as a minivan and a GT-R. Those ADV bikes really just loose the aerodynamic advantage and add some weight. As in the video Ari mentioned they don't seem to be loosing much on the track.

kalimarus the s1000xr was only around 1 second slower than the s1000rr around a track, on roads the s1000xr would most likely be faster more midrange punch after all

When I bought my ADV bike, I already knew it was heavy as heck. I'd had a scrambler before, which I'd fooled around with enough to not expect myself to be sending it down a single-track on 550 pounds of Triumph. What I like about these bikes isn't necessarily that they go anywhere fast, especially not really technical dirt riding, but rather that they'll go EVERYWHERE. I know that all I need to get my bike clean to the far side of the planet is some spokes and some knobbies and a bit of grit. I can make it a decent chunk of the way there on the alloy rims and 90-10s I've got now. ADV bikes have a real go-anywhere sort of feel to them, but its really more than just a feeling. I'd love to see this race run again with 1000 miles of steppe instead of a motocross track, and see how that plays out.

I haven't been off-road with my 1190r yet, but I use speed bumps to lift both wheels and from my experience the suspension settings changes a lot. If you adjust your suspension, make sure to adjust front and back in a similar way. ( so changing all front settings to sport , and your back to normal , may cause you to miscalculate your jump or lift completely :) ) If I win the lottery I'll go and try off-road with mine, but for now I'm just having some fun on pavement with much less risk of falling :) If you check the video's from Chris Birch with the 1190r , he makes it seem like a dirt-bike , so it IS the driver who makes the difference on these heavy bikes :) Great video , great bikes , I enjoyed this episode a lot !

Guys! Late to the party- just watched the episode(guess I should also subscribe!). This was great but it would have been awesome to put these two ADV's up against some of the leading dual-sports that are really the alternative choice for riders looking for a bike to tackle road and dirt. I don't know too many MX'ers who ever talk about ADV's, but there is the on-going debates with KLR/DR/XL/XR/EXC-F owners who say those types of bikes are way better than an ADV for backwoods & trail riding with road mixed in. A comparison "test"( as loose and fun as you like) would be great with some kind of mixed-terrain loop like up in Wildomar area would be awesome and really represent what people do with either style of bike. Hill climbs, scrambles, creek beds and twisties. Bring it on!

Its obviously not as good as a dirt bike off road , but you can pretty much take it through all the same stuff. I have quite a few gripes with my Tiger 900 Rally Pro, but I am blown away by how well it does off road considering it weighs almost three times as much as a 450. It is a challenge to manage the weight sometimes but that's part of the fun.

I think your conclusion has it completely backwards: no sane person would expect ADV bikes to compete with 450s on a motorcross track. What you showed instead is that the bikes were capable of running on the track and even surviving multiple crashes. From personal experience, I took my 1190 R on tricky trails in Moab, then rode back to California at times hitting 115mph. That versatility is what sells these bikes!

Then I hit the enduro trails with my racing mates on their full bread enduro bikes everybody scorning me and saying Iwould "smash my cylinders off" However the forest where really happy with my beemer by impressing everyone (even me) with super traction and handling most challenges super nice. Didn't go for the swampy paths though.

There are different classes of ADV bikes. Like they mentioned these two are full size heavy top of the line ADV bikes. But you can also get everything between a enduro bike and these SUVs. I have a Husqvarna TR650 Terra. It's around middle to light weight with something around 390 pounds. So if you don't want to spend a fortune on a heavy not so offroad capable ADV bike, there's more.... KLR 650 and such.

I wanted a Terra soooo bad when they came out. I just could not afford one. I like the 600 cc ADV bikes. And they can be big dirtbikes or adventure bikes.

What is an Adventure bike? What makes a bike an ADV? Any bike can be an ADV I guess. But I see the 650 class as a mix between enduro and those fat SUV ADV.

Fun video indeed and very worthwhile!! Yes there was something to learn for everyone. For me the fact that you can even ride a big ADV on a MX track and complete it in a reasonable time is saying something about their capability, try that on a sporty street bike. I was hoping that the Africa Twin would've been the preferred bike since it is a smaller cc and weight- (I'm just biased because I want the DCT bike.) Now let's see how well those MotoCross bikes do traveling hundreds of miles across the country on the highway ?? well maybe not... Thanks guys!!!

This is exactly why I own a DRZ400S and an Africa Twin. Two bikes with two very different purposes.

while DRZ is not true dirt bike, like for ex CRF 450 :D It's closer to africa than CRF

Zack & Ari getting it done brilliantly as usual, don't know if there's any conflicting online commerce between the channels but it's a pity you blokes didn't hook up with the Adventure Oz guys up in Qld while you were down-under because they could have taken you'd out on some great Adventure Riding trails inland from the Gold Coast & Brisbane .. that would have been a win win for everybody.

For the average rider these bigger adventure bikes are not that easy to ride off-road. The key thing I noticed was the difficulty in turning the KTM on the track. I have taken my F800GS around a MX track a couple of times (just for fun) and it is really hard to pick a line. You know where you want to go, but sometimes you feel like you are just a passenger on the bike, with no ability to really pick your line. Due to this, and the weight of these bikes they are pretty much rubbish on single track and MX tracks. They are great on dirt roads where you have a bit more room to move around and the line is no so important. Thanks for the video. +1 sub 4 U.

I would love to see a comparison like this between MX bikes and 650 ADVs like the BMW Sertao or the Yamaha XT660z Tenere.

Alright, I think you guys should do a road trip. ADV bikes on the Hatfield Mccoy trails. Its not like motocross but no roads either. You can show how to prep the bikes for a weekend of camping.

First jump on my G650GS felt like the bike would break in half. The sound it made alone was scary enough. But that didn't stop me and the bike. It goes rough but it goes.

The ADVs are made to conquer long offroad/onroad trip. The dirtbikes are for shorter and more rougher terrains. You are not recommended to ride cross continetal trip with a dirtbike. But you also are not recommended to ride an adv to a dense tight terrain. Recommended - it might get the job done, but is it wise?

At around 1:12 the front tyre of the KTM doesnt seem to be rotating straight, seems to have some kind of miss alignment, did anyone else notice this?
