Awesome review Tomas. This microphone really does look cool, and sound great. I personally couldn't hear the fan too much, but at times it was noticeable. Anyways, it seems pretty good for the price! Btw, what headphones were those?

I bought the 990 and the 990XL on sale and saved about 50$. You are correct, they pick up EVERYTHING, PC fans, AC noise, neighbors cutting lawn etc... but that just shows they are a good sensitive microphones, the onus of isolating noise falls upon the user. I understand now why many private studios are built in country homes, rather then the city.

I really dig this mic. The reason why it sounds different when you talk behind it, it's because the pickup pattern is cardioid where it mostly focuses on what's in front and a little from the side. If you google it, you'll get more specific info on various pickup patterns. Good demo overall :)

In addition to being a pretty decent mic in it's own right, the sheer number of aftermarket mods available for this mic can turn it into a world class performer.

2:36 Picking up background noise isn't an MXL 990 thing, it's a condenser mic thing. The MXL 990 is a condenser mic. The reason the mic sounds the way it does when you speak into the back of the diaphragm is that it's a cardioid pattern condenser mic. All of these characteristics are normal for a cardioid pattern condenser mic. If you want a mic that rejects off-axis and background noise, get a dynamic mic.

Great Overview! I am not a big fan of condenser mics only because I live in an area where noise is just inevitable and I always have dogs barking in my apartment lmao

What if you put a windscreen on it? that should eliminate the fan noise. Regardless it sounds great!

I bought a 990 and sent it back. It was said to be a LDC but it isn't. The little capsule sits in a big dummy ring so it looks big though the grill. Mine sounded thin and tinny. It is a waste of money and something of a poser.

frustrating, ive bought a mxl 990 mic, also the behringer umc22 interface. my computer is still not picking up my mic. all the videos are not showing me how to set up the mic to my computer. like is there a special software for the mic its self? these videos are all so vague and not helping with the technical side of the set up.

There's lots of variables there. It all depends on the mic's power needs and the output ability of the interface. I don't see a problem with your setup here, it should work.

thank you very much i have a cable xlr / jack and im going to buy a mixer with a phantom power and a condenser mic but the mic dont bring any cable with it... if the xlr / jack cable that i have works i dont have to buy a xlr / xlr cable i use my cable

I think its a great review for those that would like to know more about the MXL 990. When speaking behind the mic you were referring to the proximity effect of the microphone's diaphragm. It typically picks up a bit of sound from the rear, an SE Reflection Filter goo.gl/LtwEIv would help eliminate this somewhat, (and a room with some sound absorbent material on the walls).

This one comes with its own shock mount but any 3rd party shock mount that is the proper diameter should work. This mic will pick up any contact noise so a shock mount really isn't optional.
