I was able to catch it just listening from my iPad lol I did spend over 15 years as a professional audio engineer… So 🤷‍♂️ - but it was subtle, and would not be as noticeable if we weren’t listening back to back of course. I always enjoy when filmmakers help teach people the importance of audio. For beginners without a budget, I typically recommend a Shure SM 57 with windscreen - that mic has beat out microphones 10 times its cost lol of course it depends on the circumstance, but that is hands-down one of the most versatile microphones of all time. Good video.

One curious anecdote I'd like to add to the conversation is that the good ol' 100usd Shure SM58 has the exact same capsule as SM7b. 58 just comes with a transformer so that you don't need to buy beefy preamps to juice it. So to further underline the issue: Appearances.

@@RobbDizzl I googled and you are right. They are different but same, yes. Nevertheless adding 3 or some inches between the capsule and windfoam on sm58 it's arguably identical sounding to sm7b. @@JanneAirDotCom The SM7b is a fantastic mic. There are countless classic records that used it and there is no arguing about it. The SM58 or 57 also don’t sound the same. Great video, audio is an essential part of filmmaking. Just a few considerations i'd like to point out: 1. The Cloudlifter will provide you little to none benefit over Duet 3/Solo preamps, since they're already super clean. 2. The dynamic range analogy seems a bit awkward. The "dynamic range" in audio should come from the D/A in pair with the bit rate and the microphone design. Not being able to pick the "low end" seems to me to have more to do with the mic design than the preamp quality (sure you can only capture so much detail with the D/A of an USB mic) 3. About the Solo vs. Duet 3 comparisons. I would rather say that the diference you'd hear in hiss increase and detail loss coming from the Focusrite Solo to the Apogee Duet 3 would be neglible to the one you would hear jumping from the Focusrite Solo to a USB mic. 4. A Dynamic mic in an untreated room (no acoustic treatment, PC fan noise) vs a Condenser mic in a treated room. The first option should probably be the cheapest one to invest in. Nonetheless, the FTF would provide a huge improvement in audio for beginners and i won't hesitate for it to be my first mic. keep up the good work!
@itsalexoh
@itsalexoh 3 жыл бұрын
I immediately thought mic #2 was the FTF because it had a little bump in clarity in the mid-high and high frequencies, which gave it away that was not the SM7B, which tends to lack the detail that condenser mics have! ;) Anyhow, most of my colleagues that are unfamiliar with audio equipment always ask me if the SM7B is right for them, but you nailed it at 8:07. No matter what gear you use, they are just tools! What matters is your understanding of capturing audio. I had a recording artist who did sessions at my recording studio with our Neumann U87 setup with high-end preamps and converters. Later that week, the artist recorded more lines from a smaller project studio with a Rode condenser worth less than 1/10th of our setup. The next session she came in to finish the song, I mixed takes from both microphones because what mattered, in the end, was her performance. Then all the other things you mentioned come into play, such as acoustic treatment, mic distance, gain, and the limitations of your equipment like headroom and noise floor. Loved that you made this comparison video and now I can send it to my friends who worry they can't get good results with a mic because of its price!

I’d like to point out two things. First, sound treating a room has its own costs, and you’re not factoring that into the price for the FTF mic. Second, there isn’t a mic in the universe that sounds good six feet away in your bathroom. That’s more than just poor mic technique, that’s setting up a deliberate worse-case scenario for just the SM7B.
@Matthew_Raymond
@Matthew_Raymond 3 жыл бұрын
@Damien Lavizzo Except a dynamic USB microphone would be a better fit for only slightly more money (or perhaps less money if you factor in the cost of sound treatment). For example, why is he not comparing his mic to a Shure MV7? Or perhaps a lav mic. You could probably get a Rode AI-Micro interface and a Purple Panda lav mic for about $100 total. Point is a large diaphragm condenser isn’t the only option, or even the best.

I use a Shure SM7B and occasionally talk about it in my videos when I discuss the quality difference in microphones and the cost to use an SM7B Can vary depending upon which gear you pick to pair it with and what your needs are, so 1200 sounds pretty good based on how much the SM7B Cost just a few years ago with some of the equipment that was offered, as well as some of the better equipment offered today you can still find yourself spending 700-800 setting up just to use one good mic using low end audio mixers and interfaces etc.. I haven’t watched the video yet but just based on what I know from experience I support your titling and I’m about to watch right now.

Just a PreSonus Revelator (I think it’s about $180) with no pop filter recording directly to my computer, with my Sony XM4 headphones to monitor my gain levels (which I can change easily). No acoustic treatment or anything and it sounds great.

The issue with these comparisons is the pareto principle. almost NO product at a given higher end pricepoint justifies this pricepoint by a linear quality to price ration. its always gonna be exponential. But yea. I noticed the difference, as you could hear the dynamic characteristics of the SM7B compared to the cheap mic. You could also clearly hear the "editing" on the cheaper mics audio waves. However I'm pretty sure that for 99% of the people a sub 100$ Mic is all that they need

@@fulltimefilmmaker It's also could be considered a little misleading to say it costs $1270. I do appreciate the fact that you broke down all the costs. @@gregermax He does say all that. I should have waited to comment until the end of the video. There's actually an excellent breakdown of price and a solid review from "that audio guy" regarding the fidelity. I think changing the title to include setup will help. When it only says mic that's all I'm thinking, rather than that entire signal chain which can have a big impact on the overall fidelity. It's pretty awesome that FTF are trying to provide solid entry level gear for the beginners out there, while being upfront that it's not going to be the same quality as more expensive gear. Van Halen once recorded an entire album Shure SM-57's. It's not just the gear, but how you use the gear.

So, the thing I recognized was that Mic 1 had a boomier, bottom mid-frequency while Mic 2 had significantly cleaner and less boomy bass frequency. Now, I did not know at first that ftf was a condenser microphone which would have been a dead giveaway considering how the air register kinda opened up immediately on mic2. I am not very well versed in audio equipment and hearing (just enough to hear and tell the difference between mic 1/2 with my eyes closed) but also did not have a reference frame to know "How" The SM7b was supposed to sound like, since I have heard it from time to time, but never actually used one. Also as a brass player, I prefer the presence of mid/high frequency having a bit more of a shine, which made me prefer the 2nd microphone, so I assumed, the 2nd microphone could have been the more expensive one. Since I liked it better. Until, well, I remembered that SM7b is classically known for its presence in the bottom, lack of air, and generally dynamicy microphone (Which usually technically, both figuratively and technologically, lacks dynamics compared to the condenser microphone, oh the irony). Exactly what I described Mic1 to be. Duh ding dong, preference does not necessarily mean more expensive. Some people state the boomier bottom mid is smoother dark, and the lack of high as curving the annoying frequency, While I say, I am not too big of a fan of bass frequency, and I am here for treble. I know I am the odd one out, but seeing how many people got it wrong, maybe I am not the odd one out. My take on this is, after actually trying out and buying quite a few used gears and trying them out, and seeing what I like, just like the age-old adage in photography goes, it's not the microphone that makes great art and content, but the thing standing 1-5 inches behind it (depending on how much you like to eat the microphone to take advantage of that sweet sweet proximity effect. Unless you use an RE mics. you guys are weird, jk). Ironically the more you are artistically well versed and technically (not necessarily knowing the physical microphone 'Oh my mic goes up to 100K hertz it is so high it hurtz my ears' , but knowing the "How to" use the microphone as an instrument) well versed in using your voice/instrument/whatever, you'll be making content with anything you can get your hands on. If you got the 1k$ gear, use it, if you have this $69 (nice)mic, use it. Of course, the expensive mics help, but it helps surprisingly little until you actually turn on that field recorder/mixer/interface and hit that big red circle. If you don't that's a very expensive paperweight you got there. I'll buy it for cheap on eBay if you are interested. What, hey I never said I didn't want that thousand-dollar mic and equipment.

I tell people all of the time looking for YT narration mics that these days a budget mic (within reason... not a 5.00 Karaoke mic from a Dept. @@Hardware244 I agree about the sibilance and the lack of low end, but the fundamental timbre of the mics is what I’m referring to is very similar, which with working on both mics a lot over the years is still have to say they sound similar in that regard. A sm7b to me has always been a rounder thicc 57. I find that with some saturation you can bring the lows and burly characteristic out to match a 7b better, and if you’re good at notching frequencies you definitely can eq out those harsh upper mids on the 57. Ultimately it’s dependent on the persons voice and the source you’re using it on and maybe we’ve just had different sources to compare with, but if I’ve ever need a sm7b, I’ve been okay with a 57 to achieve that same relative timbre

I figured out the correct mic at first due to plosives and direction your face was at the time. After that it started to come more apparent the longer I listened.

I got it right from an old S7 phone but I do have a sm7b though, you can usually tell cause the sm7b is very flat and natural with not much bass added unlike the other that had some higher mids. I will say with a tiny amount of EQ adjusting and you wouldn't be able to tell a difference.

The problem is that USB mics can't "connect" to many audio software like cakewalk without all kind of virtual ASIO.

The SM7B was not used on MJ's Thriller. This is a common misconception. Michael Jackson was recorded with the original SM7, not the SM7B, which is a re-issue. Bruce Swedien talks about it in his book (The Bruce Swedien Recording Method) and is pretty clear that he does not consider the original SM7 and SM7B to be equivalents. He recorded those tracks, so you'd expect he would know.

Good video. If you're spending $50 on a 3ft Mogami XLR, you're getting ripped off. Canare Star Quad with Neutrik connectors should be about $25, roll your own for about $10.

Awesome video! Would you consider the Zoom H6 a professional audio interphase for the SM7B? Of course you need to bring in the files to the computer after but some might not care for this extra step if it avoids buying a new interphase. Thank you!
@Matthew_Raymond
@Matthew_Raymond 3 жыл бұрын
The Zoom H6 is in a sort of grey area where it technically shouldn’t have enough gain, but in practice, if you have a loud voice, it might have just enough gain for you. However, a Cloudlifter (or perhaps a cheaper inline preamp, like an sE DM-1 Dynamite) would definitely help drive down the preamp noise, and unless you’re doing professional recording, that would work fine for your purposes. I wouldn’t call it an ideal interface, though. For best results, I’d look specifically for an interface with preamps that can provide 60 dB of clean gain. I find my (sadly discontinued) Zoom F4, for example, provides enough clean gain that I don’t need the inline preamp at all. (Note that the F6 and F8 have basically the same preamps.) As for pure audio interfaces, that’s outside my area of expertise, unfortunately.

Thanks for a great explanation of the differences of the two mics. I did have a question, you mentioned acoustically treating your room for less reverb, what are some of the best (and easy/cheap) ways to do this?
@ClearAdventure
@ClearAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
You can buy acoustic foam tiles from say Sweetwater music (or Amazon, but most on Amazon are normal foam and not real sound deadening foam tiles) and another great and easy way is to just hang thick carpet or blankets on your walls. Always make sure you have carpet on your floor as well. You need to deaden (treat/kill the echo) as much as possible. A treated room is literally called a "Dead room". A room with a ton of echo/reverb is a "Live room", and most are too live to record a condenser mic in. Hope this helps!
