Today, we're talking about the Shure SM7b... again. I've gone back to it for the first time in a long time, and I've fallen back in love with it all over again. There seems to be some confusion about how to use it, so let's re-review the SM7b microphone and talk about how to get the best sound out of it!

There is one reason to run the SM7B without one of the windshields on. The high end is *so* much more affected by it than you would typically expect from a windshield. It's worth experimenting with.

Speaking to the flyswatter pop filter on a windscreenless SM7b. Removing the stock filter does add treble extension, which is especially important in a vocal music production setting. Overall it sounds slightly cleaner than the stock filter for singing applications. It's less about improving the plosive reduction, and more about the sound signature being more natural.

It's much cleaner to my ears that way, especially when using UAD plugins when tracking. Also, many people forget about the low cut/treble boost switches on the backplate of the SM7B. Those can be useful too.

The difference between filmmaking processing (subtle) and broadcast (in your face) processing. The trick, if you really want that much more, is low processing on your voice processor (whether that's a DBX, or software on your computer.) So 3-6 dB compression max. (fast attack, fairly slow release vs what KZbinrs and podcasters mostly do, super fast release.) Don't boost your low and high end too much. Then use a subtle to medium level of multiband compressor. That's when the broadcast mics really show themselves. You don't really need to EQ them either. The multiband will fix that right up for ya.

Thank you so much for pointing this out (regarding the SM7B's shielding). I too had a similar problem where no matter how many ferrite beads I had in my setup and path, no matter how many ground loop isolators I had, whether I used gimmicks such as an iDefender or not, my mics kept picking up this EMI buzz or hum. The SM7B is the only mic I have that has enough shielding to cancel it out. I discovered that the EMI had a lot to do with the electrical wires hovering over my home (our neighborhood has a spiderweb of electrical wires connected to each other). Great video!

3 crucial questions: 1. Can you use a DBX286s with a cloudlifter/fethead/dynamite stick? 2. Does the Go XLR work on MacOS? 3. What are the pros and cons of a GoXLR vs DBX286s?
@AnsiGaming
@AnsiGaming 2 жыл бұрын
1. Yes you can and I highly recommend the Fethead/Cloudlifter period. I’m ordering one soon. Using a SM7B without one is crazy. 2. Not natively no. Running through parallels or bootcamp is workable. 3. The benefit of an Analog Channel strip like a DBX286s is that it’s completely native. It doesn’t require any software compatibility. All the processing takes place without any software. You just plug the DBX into your Mac compatible audio interface and that’s it. The GoXLR emulates some of the features of the DBX digitally and with more control. One of my biggest issues with the DBX is the severe lack of control. You can’t adjust specifically. You pretty much go with their definition of bass and treble and compression. 4. It really depends on what you’re going for. Most people are happy with a DBX286s and for good reason. You simply don’t need to touch it again once you set it up. You can even switch PCs and have the same exact sound. 5. Personally I’m going for an upgraded version of a DBX style channel strip. But it all depends on how much effort you wanna put in. If you’re on MacOS then it’s a no brained to go for the DBX286s. If you need any more help or questions please reply and I’ll take care of you.

Nice deep-dive into this mic's sound. Thanks especially for talking about the plosives -- I thought I was the only one having that issue with the SM7B, as I never see anybody use it with a "flyswatter" as you said. I do talk close to it, and maybe tend to over-enunciate when I get rolling, and the plosives are a downside of that.. I've gone back to the "puffy" windscreen (even if it muffles sound a little), and if I keep the mic -- as Bandrew always says -- pointed at the corner of my mouth, about 45 degrees and a fist-length away, the plosives are tamed. Hope that helps somebody.

I like your logic. I don't know if you realize this but you think like a photographer. Audio in some ways demands the same rules. Great sound is created /engineered beforehand. A. The mic a broadcaster chooses is the same as the camera a photographer chooses. B. Manage your environment. Photographer creates the scene before the shot is taken and /or continues to manipulate the scene ongoing. The same can be said about audio. Broadcaster manipulates the amount of reverb, background noise, base, mid and treble in real time and prepares the sound output beforehand as much as possible and manipulates it ongoing during broadcast. C. The familiar, common rule applies, "Garbage in-Garbage out." The Photographer , Videographer, Audio Tech, should never rely heavily on post process adjustments to reserect the work. Minamal post processing or no tweaks should be the goal in software. Excellent video 😊

Hi! Have had the SM7b since mid-2018, fantastic mic! I have heard some through 70db around as recommended gain. I started with an audient ID14, and while at first I thought it was enough, I eventually realized it wouldn’t cut it. Same problem with the ID44. I eventually picked up the cloudlifter and now use that with my EVO 4. Glad you’re getting good results with your go XLR! It seems like the more gain you feed it, the better. Wonderful video :)

If you want to clean up your cables and get rid of the ferrite bead and any interference you should get some StarQuad cable. Canare has good cable, it's called Canare StarQuad L-4e6s and put one Neutrik EMC XLR connector on each of your cables in your chain. The type of cable and the connectors are specially designed to cancel out noise. You should take a look at this connector and how it works it would really clean up your setup; NC3FXX-EMC-B (EMC connector) NC3MXX-14-B-D (male end) Canare StarQuad L-4e6s You only need 1 EMC connector on a cable btw.

When u take off the screen filter completely :) it brightens it up a bit more naturally instead of the boost switches on the bottom of d mic. I do this to counter the proximity effect as i need to eat the mic since i have a very noisy environment. The louder the source( your voice closer) the less noise floor will be. N pretty much i dont eq the mic at all. N just switch the high pass filter.

The RE 320 is supposed to have a hum-bucking coil. It is possible that some units leave the factory with the hum-bucking coil connected backwards. I don't have to tell you that this actually amplifies hun and interference rather than cancelling it. This was rumored to be an issue with some units of the RE 20. As a voice mic I recently rediscovered my AKG D 202e. I'm sure there are some available on ebay. Its warmth is almost ribbon-like. You have relaxed and your elocution has improved since your first videos.

Appreciate the mic recommendation. I have RE20s, and not thinking I need the SM7B except for the fact that it looks cooler than the RE20. 😎Style is worth something. In a KZbin / video world that one point makes the 7b interesting. As far as interfaces, it's doubtful the group following here would know the company & interface, but I can not say enough about Metric Halo interfaces, the team, the company, etc. Have you heard of them? They are awesome! I do not work for them, but I bought 2 of their audio interfaces 17 years ago. They are the only company I know that has issued multiple digital hardware upgrades (the analog portions remain constant) and future proofed their interfaces. The ULN-2 is a 2 input mic-pre & ULN stands for ultra low noise. It's great for mics that need a lot of gain (dynamics). The most recent upgrade was to upgrade from Sharc DSP to FPGA for internal effects and I mean real deal effects and building blocks to create others... They are the sleeper very few know. You can get the ULN-2s for a great price now. Anyway, love the channel, the topic, and the passion. keep it rockin' Eposvox!

I've got a $500 interface and a $900 interface that I use for audio production. Both of these weren't enough to power the SM7B even with the pre-amps turned all the way up. With just the interface I was getting -18dBFS while talking loudly right up on mic. Ended up grabbing the cloudlifter everyone recommends online today and it's more than sufficient now without having to get close to the mic. I agree that people should invest the right money into it but at the same time Shure really could have made this mic more user-friendly out of the box. I have dozens of mics ranging from $100 to $1,700 and I've never had this experience with a dynamic microphone until purchasing the SM7B,

The problem with the GOXlr is there isn't a really good way to do volume controls with a streamdeck. You can setup profiles, which can work, but then you need a profile for every single combination of settings you can think of. If I turn the music down manually from say 60% to 40%... then a profile gets hit, I lose that. That is the main reason for dumping the GOXlr at this time. I have asked and asked Helicon to add hotkey support so you can just send the keystrokes to make small changes instead of system wide profile changes.

After a long time of drooling, I finally got the SM7b. It certainly put a dent in my wallet, but the quality of it makes it worth it. The Rode PodMic would have been more than enough as a dynamic microphone. I already had a Blue Spark SL, which was great as a condenser microphone. Hell, I could have stuck with the Elgato Wave:3 this entire time and not regretted it simply because of how shockingly good that microphone was, even without post-processing. But I wanted to get the Shure SM7b because, after playing around with it, it's the only microphone I've used that accurately captures my voice. The quality of it is just second-to-none. There are great microphones for a smaller budget, and the SM7b is not necessary for everyone, but it's a game-changer if you're focusing on producing spoken content.

Thanks for a good video on the mic and interfaces. Sweep for those little crackles in your voice by doing a narrow 6-12 dB boost, and sweeping that from 0.7 to 6kHz slowly on a recording of your voice. Cut the offending part in your GoXLR equalizer. - a dialogue mixer idea

There’s a KZbinr named iFerg, if you check out his videos you can hear how loud and clear his audio is even though his ShureSM7B is far away from his mouth. Even when mine is close to my mouth it doesn’t sound that loud. It’s still way too low. I use a ShureSM7B + GoXLR. I even bought a cloudlifter as well, and it’s low with and without it. Any advice?

I think most people have to buy a cloudlifter box to increase the gain by 12db, I remember back in like 2015 or something when people were first buying these microphones for streaming and that's what was often done

Love the SM7b, but I have to say the Rode Podmic is a great wallet friendly alternative. I submit through a decent pre-amp and proper Q most would not be able to differentiate the two.

I just chat with a local guy that had a high end deck (don't remember the name) that has plenty of boost for the SM7b. it is a four figure deck. However, he said that the Cloudlifter still made the SM7b better with that deck. Would you know why or is it just the deck? have you tried the Cloudlifter with the GoXLR and found that it made zero improvement? Thanks.

Personally been using the Focusrite CM25 mic for 3 years and the SM7B has always been the professional content creator choice besides if they can stretch to a RE-20 or something, but personally I think I prefer the condenser microphone sound such as Rode NT1, AT2020 etc and these can be had for under half the price and you don't need to worry as much about then buying a cloudlifter box to boost the microphone gain, and going through all this to make them sound good because they just work. I feel like some people just buy the SM7B because they see everyone else doing that and that it "looks" professional rather than considering the sound

If you want to get the quality out of it without tweaking to much, put a Triton Audio FetHead on it. You will love it.
@EposVox
@EposVox Жыл бұрын
All that does is give it more gain in exchange for phantom power. That doesn’t have any impact on “quality” unless you have a cheap interface that can’t power it (or aren’t gain staging correctly)

Excellent video as usual Mr. Vox! Though I’m curious on how effective that ferrite bead is? I have an SM57 and it is not shielded like the SM7b, so I unfortunately pick up a lot of EMI from my monitor weirdly. Would you recommend the ferrite bead? & Do you have an affiliate link for the specific bead you used? Many thanks!

Did you have any Idea of how to make the shure sm7b noise dissapear without a cloudlifter with a Line 6 ux2?
@gaborkiss1425
@gaborkiss1425 3 жыл бұрын
That interface might not have enough clean gain for it, hence the noise. Same problem with my dbx 286A preamp. When approaching the 60 dB gain limit, noise appears.
@Latzi
@Latzi 2 жыл бұрын
you could try the klark teknik CT-1 (around 25$). It works just like a cloudlifter but its much cheaper but not bad at all ^^
@hollywoodheiner6028
@hollywoodheiner6028 3 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt your Focusrite was that bad in regards to noise. Its preamps work extremely well even with a SM7B. The level of noise you get in relation to the gain it provides (actually the dynamic range) holds up to most of the other Interfaces up to 1000 bucks. And you don’t even need a Cloudlifter or Fethead. So did Bandrew really tell you to upgrade your interface to get less noise?!

I've heard good things about the Shure SM7B paired with the RODE AI-1 Interface too as it provides enough of what you need - what do you think? It seems to compare spec wise in between the Audient EVO 4 and the MOTU M2.

Hi, I'm António Filipe from Portugal I follow your channel since 2018, I love the tone as you do your reviews. I saw your review on the Motu M2 sound interface, the Shuer SM7B microphone with the Fethead applicator and ended up buying them. I connected the Shuer SM7B microphone (+ the fethead) and my Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250 headphones to the Motu M2 sound interface, installed the driver, and was able to record and listen to Adobe Audition, however when I'm not recording (and even recording) no sound comes out of the headphones. What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't sound come out of the headphones at the time of recording? Thank you very much and continued success with your wonderful channel.

EposVox thank you for the reply. i have to turn the pre-amp on the GoXLR up pretty high without it, which introduces static in the recording. I’m using Mogami XLR cables so I didn’t cheap out there, and I have a full size GoXLR. Can you think of why it would introduce so much static when I turn the gain up? It’s got to be around 50 for me to get a decent level without the CL.

EposVox so I tried it without the cloud lifter and had to turn the GoXLR up to about 50db and static was very present. I have my cables all managed under my desk and I think I might have my XLR cables too close to some power cables. I will try changing all of that

I don't fully agree with your take on just getting a better interface to negate the need for a mic preamp, like the cloudlifter/fethead, for everyone. You might need to take your mic somewhere you need mobile setup. Personally I use a scarlett 2i4 on my desktop but also have a zoom h4n pro for recording mobile. I ended up purchasing 2 simply sound ss-1 preamp/activators, so I can use them with both my interfaces.

Heyy great Video but way to pricey for me! Could you show the Superlux HMC-660X + Headset DAC (Xenyx302 has a good one and is also a mixer) + 3,5mm to XLR adapter. Great 70$ Setup. You can directly use the XLR Input but the noise floor is a bit higher because it expects 9V for the mic.
