MY NUMBER ONE TIP, Ive taken 4 checkrides and failed ZERO Because, I always made my answer short and simple. I never dug myself into a hole. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS whenever you’re in doubt just say “i know the answer but i’m gonna confirm with my sources” That always worked for me and helped me pass my checkrides Let the Examiner do the talking! And just give him a nice basic answer, if he wants more information he will ask.

For those who might find this useful here are some of the equations “ distance / ground speed x 60 = minutes “ and with the minutes calculated “ # minutes \ 60 x fuel burn = fuel required “ 👍

Why convert back and forth from minutes?
@wbleonard

Or why not record ground speed per minute on the card? Then the math becomes "distance / ground speed per minute".

When I was first learning diversions, I was told to use the acronym ABCDEF, and found it quite useful. I hated acronyms, because generally I found them harder to remember than the items they represented, but this one is pretty easy if you know the alphabet. A - Airport: pick an airport you're going to. B - Best guess heading: Turn in the general direction. Initially rounding to the nearest 30 degrees is good enough, then fine tune later. C - Clock: Start the timer so you'll know how far you have gone and how much you have left. D - Distance: Measure the approximate distance. E - ETA: How long will it take to get there at your current ground speed? F - Fuel: How much fuel will you use in that time? Hopefully you have enough. With a little bit of mental math you can get surprisingly accurate numbers by using rules of thumb, estimates, and approximations, without performing accurate measurements or calculations (sometimes not very practical when being bumped around in a Cessna)

i have my PPL Checkride coming up soon here in Germany, and i am tempted to try this out. I will check with my CFI first, but if i do use it i will let you know how it went and what the reaction of the Examiner was :D
@marsgal42
@marsgal42 2 жыл бұрын
That's a new one for me. An excellent suggestion! I was taught to fly a "round number" speed (90 or 100 knots) on diversions and update ground speed/ETA from landmarks as I flew. On my checkride the diversion was a gift, following a river (Fraser River) to another local airport (Pitt Meadows CYPK). With estimates on headings, fuel burn and ETA, of course. I now have GPS ground speed at my disposal but a sanity check by looking out the window never hurt anybody.

17 for 17! This is the way I learned how to fly. Fly as the crow flies. You should be able to look at a sectional and get a general bearing to your location and you should mentally be able to figure by the distance of the chart roughly how far the distance is. You should have an approximate ground speed taking in consideration which way you are going to turn and which way the wind is blowing. You then can get a rough estimate. This is known as pilotage and dead reckoning. It’s about 80% accurate. At least it can get you heading in the general direction.

17/17 One of my biggest tips is the day before your check ride is, if you need to, study for a little bit in the morning but do something non-aviation related for the rest of the day. Go out and have fun. Get your mind off the check ride. Sometimes overloading yourself makes it worse and the stress on top of that can be a horrible determent. gl everyone.

17 4 17 hi Jason, this is my first introduction to your wind card. Wasn’t really sure about any other methods to get the calculations I needed or to at least say to my examiner Than to be aware of the alternates along the cross country trip and then to use the width of my finger as being approximately five nautical miles wide scale on a VNC map ; I then measure out the distance to My alternate and or diversion. With that part of the equation known it’s a matter of some simple division to find the time and of course we should be aware of our fuel burn at cruise multiplied by the time . I have used rote memory in order to help me with my calculations of which again are approximate. Mind you wind direction will be a variable in these calculations so your wind card certainly can be a solution for this issue Thanks for the great tip, I’m going to investigate for myself how this works out. Always a pleasure listening to your tips and perspectives👍✌🏻✈️

I always have a wind card with me on any flight its a simple part of my prep, i still plan manually despite having GPS. My wind card is slightly different though as it has ground speed and heading correction for wind to be able to ensure my track is accurate.

When I first started looking into flying I had watched many many of your video's and on my initial trial flight which was from my local airfield to a nearby city. I turned up with all the NOTAM's, plates for both fields and a note book full of flight planning notes and frequencies. I also made using a 6 inch square a wind card. Even though we didn't use any of the stuff I had done ( long story but the training school was ripping me off ) I have found the practice has been super useful since then

17 for 17. My DPE on my PPL checkride asked me on the ground portion about diverting. Once in the air he didn’t have me start a Xctry, but after we did maneuvers he said “Take me to KASD.” We did 2 landings there then flew back to KNEW for the other landings. I had the panned alternates built into my X-ctry flight plan. Similar to the wind card, I had planned for my approximate ground speed and fuel burn if I had to divert at about the halfway point. That way I could easily adjust it based on where in the flight I was.
