We have LOVED the Little House Series and now I'm reading the Enid Blyton books to my kids. They were some of my childhood favourites!

Our favorite read aloud right now it little house books with Prairie primer we can do multiple ages at once with different variety of assignments to pick from as we choose and explore topics from the reading. I do a themed library haul based on the primer topics covered and then use those books as inspiration and resources for our writing assignments for the older students

I’ll have to check out more on the lamplighter. I noticed they have Lamp lighter audio theater which we love adventures in odyssey so if it’s anything like that I’m sold.

Christian Heroes Then and Now are wonderful. Gladys Alyward is ny favorite so far. We also love My Father's Dragon, Little Pilgrim's Progress, The Big Wave, Stone Fox, and The Cay.

These are such great books! You are so blessed to have children that WANT to read. Mine HATE to read. 🤦🏼‍♀️. Seriously, it's pulling teeth to get them to read things around here. That may be my fault from trying to "recreate school at home" and all my mistakes in the beginning. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The fact that your 8 year old reads and enjoys White Fang just amazes me! I always enjoyed that book when I was in school.

My one child also hates reading, and I feel like it’s somehow my fault as a parent (or even her Dad’s fault for never modeling reading a book). We’ve done audiobooks in the car when she was younger and we commuted, and she did enjoy most of those. I’m still trying to figure out how to foster a love of books - I’m leaning towards doing some reading-related activities below grade level (maybe Five in a Row) to see if that would help.

We love the Who Was and Magic Treehouse books. They seem to always be close at hand, whether for history, morning baskets, or chosen for book reports. I've been struggling with the Hero of History books as well, so thank you for the recommendation on how you use them!

All of them are really very nice and interesting too. Do your kids prefer to read more of the series type of books? I love those books that have parent-child participation too! These are not just good reads for kids, but I guess for parents too! Great way to bond. Thanks again, Abby! God bless you!

Our church bookstore sells some of the lamplighter books - I’m excited to get into them as my kids get older. Same thing with the heroes books!

I paused the video to search on ‘scribd’ and found the Sugar Creek Gang books and audiobooks - these look like a great transition out of the boxcar children series of audiobooks that my 6 year old blows through. We just got all about reading so I’m excited for his reading skills to improve!

I want to look up the America series and Lamplighter- they sound great! My oldest (he’s 11) loves the Ranger in Time series by Kate Messner (historical fiction following Ranger, a dog!)- they’re probably under his reading lvl but I preorder them when a new one comes out. I never read any of the Little House series as a kid either but we read through the first 5 several years back when we did Jennifer Pepito’s Playful Pioneer curriculum. We love that series. My oldest is reading through Farmer Boy right now and we’re both excited he gets to read through it again! Truth be told, I love books and while I’m pretty minimal at heart with our belongings, I’m not that way with books 😂 I struggle a LOT with finding the time to fit in all of the books I want to read aloud. Any tips? I’m in my 7th year HSing but I feel like I know nothing sometimes! As far as collaboration ideas, what about life skills (things like cooking, cleaning, sewing, how to change a tire, woodworking, etc)? What life skills do you guys teach, how you teach them, how often you teach them, etc. Granted, some of those things just happen while living, but some would need intentional time set aside to learn. Thanks for the great recommendations!

Love this! thanks! Could you possibly do a video or tell us how you do assigned reading in homeschool? My son loves reading and does it a ton, so I'm hesitant to assign books because I don't want to take the fun out of reading for him. Although, I see the benefit in having him read different genres, etc. Thanks! Would love to hear how you do it!

My 6th grade English teacher gave us a list of a different genre per month, for the school year, for 10 minutes of reading at the start of each class. We chose our own material from within that guideline. My dad enjoyed giving me some great suggestions as the year went by. I was a voracious reader already, but that simple idea broadened my horizons like almost nothing else in my education. Some favorite categories, old and new, were: historical fiction, sci-fi, biography, poetry, Shakespeare, and periodicals (I fell in love with the newspaper!). I think non-fiction instruction type books with sufficient text were one idea, too, not quite so exciting (to me), but good for me. :) I have fond memories of those 10 short minutes a day ~ it changed my reading life forever! And remembering that makes me think how much I could get read nowdays, even in the midst of mothering and homeschooling, if I just allowed myself those 10 mins a day! Just an idea!

I second the genre idea, allowing room for your son to choose as he potentially broadens his horizons. I did that naturally on my own out of necessity because I was a voracious reader and my parents had a large book collection at home. I rarely liked the books chosen by teachers and school librarians when I was in elementary school, and I remember at least two instances when I was resentful of having my reading choices restricted.

Are the Hey Jack books good for girls as well as boys? My kids did not like the little house books...they said there was too much detail like 2 pgs just on making butter etc.

How much independent reading do you require of your older two? As in amount of time?

I look up to you in a lot of ways as a homeschooler. I am conscious that my children are having a very White and Christian experience because of our family's choice to homeschool and because of our location. However, I seek to give them a wide range of other viewpoints through literature. I wonder if you have any recommendations in this vein?

Do you watch Torrie on the Ohana channel? She includes a lot of black history choices. I’ve also heard that the River of Voices curriculum is wonderful, but I haven’t tried it. Volunteering as a family is also a great lesson in showing your children their “privilege”, as is travel.

We wanted to like the little house in the woods books, but my son was very disturbed by all the killing in the first few pages. I wonder how other kids cope so well with this?

I remember Little House in the Big Woods being very tame. Did the book open with seasonal butchering time? I loved that series as a child, and I read it multiple times. I imagine that some kids may need to be gently guided through certain portions, especially if they have grown up in an urban environment where they don’t understand the reality of how food ends up on their plates. We also studied Native Americans extensively so I wasn’t disturbed by the attitudes towards them - it was just another glimpse into history. If your son isn’t ready for those glimpses into the reality of history, it’s probably just too early to read the books.

Are the Lamplighter books representative of a variety of races/ethnicities or does it not mention such characteristics? I love so many of the classics for the character traits they reinforce, but I often end up having to avoid them because they are blatantly racist even by the standards of the days they were written🙁 Loved your suggestions and the varieties of age groups!!!

I know you aren’t asking me so forgive me if I’m off base. My kids and I recently read Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer and I say read these books and have those difficult conversations. We were able to discuss slavery, racism etc. So while culture cancels Gone With the Wind in my opinion it’s a great opportunity to have a conversation.

@@hannawatts8368 I would go one step further and say study the authors’ opinions. I’m sure many of them were telling those stories to show just how harmful the accepted ideas were.

I love the lamplighter books, looking forward to building our collection. I also love the look of the christian classic books done by generations.org as well, they look well done and are a bit more economical. Love the look of their curriculum too, will be using some next year (our school year starts end January).
