Well I've only met you in your shop and once in lanzarote on my bike going up a hill , I obviously didn't know the type of person you are as then I thought stand offish but watching the brilliant videos and putting it all out there is very inspirational and as it says dave rides again, keep it going

Gave up the sauce 14 months ago, best thing I ever did. I never had any issues with alcohol in terms of over consumption, it was just a case of not liking how it made me feel...physically, emotionally or mentally. Like you Dave, I have a 0% beer when I want one - and no one notices any difference when I'm in a social setting. There are so many good 0% beers out there now... lagers, IPA's... you're pretty much spoiled for choice and you can't tell the difference between those and the regular version in terms of taste. I'd also recommend listening to Andrew Huberman's podcast episode on 'What Alcohol Does To Your Brain, Body And Health'. It's a heavy listen in places... and comprehensively covers what the sauce does to your body and brain. That podcast changed the game for me and was the catalyst for quitting the sauce completely. There is a section in the episode that covers alcohol and its effect on stress and anxiety. Turns out that when you drink even moderately to 'relieve stress' your baseline ability to cope with stress decreases, and that decrease stays with you even when you aren't drinking. It makes you less able to cope with stress and anxiety even when you don't have a drink in your hand. After hearing that, it was the final nail in the coffin for me and alcohol - I simply decided "OK, I'm done with it.." It was an instant, permanent decision - I haven't touched it since. Bottom line - if anyone is curious about living alcohol free/sober... give it a go for 60 days and give that podcast episode a listen... it might just change your life like it changed mine.

Well done on getting away from the dark clutches of alcohol. The feeling you describe when waking up after a heavy night of drinking is called “The Fear”. That feeling of anxiety running through your head, worrying about what you said or did the night before. It’s the worst feeling.

Watching the video and reading the fantastic comments is a real eye opener Dave, I'm definitely a binge drinker but have pegged it back so I can have a better life. Getting out on my bike and having a pub stop means I can have a coffee instead of a beer now. Keep up the great work, it's marvellous being with you on your journey.

Hi Dave don’t usually comment on social media etc. Been watching your channel and enjoying it. As I watched this one I remembered something I friend said to me years ago, don’t give up anything before you have something to replace it, so just thought I’d pass it on. Enjoy Haute Route Alps it’s amazing. How many cycling jerseys have you got don’t think I’ve seen you with the same one twice lol

I think so many of us blokes will have had a similar relationship with alcohol, and recognise so many parallel’s. I was similar in as much as I was all or nothing, and didn’t know when to stop. When the bottom fell out of my world 16 months ago I made the decision to quit because tbh I was scared of the path that it may lead me down - if I hadn’t I honestly don’t think that I would still be here today. I never even thought about the physical effects that it was having on me, but that change has been massive, and well, I’m still here, so that’s definitely a tick in the mental health box too. Keep up the good work Dave, hopefully see you on the road or at a few events this year.

Chapeau Dave !! Nothing like looking at yourself in the mirror and recognising that you have a problem. The 1st is being able to admit it !! Now life has its ups and downs and we can’t keep polishing our halos & be all saintly. But k truly believe that the way you have gone about it is a positive thing especially quoting the appeal of being much fitter will stand you in good stead. Keep doing what you’re doing all the best Dave stay strong you legend 💪🏾

Thanks for sharing that Dave, very thought provoking. I didn't have a problem, but certainly liked a drink. I'm 6 years sober now and the way I look at it is like "what advantage do I get from drinking" and it's literally nothing. I'll have the odd alcohol free, but some give me banging headaches so I mostly stick to soft drinks. I've never broken the habit of getting home and having a drink, or having a different drink with an evening meal, but it's always a soft drink now. I'm currently injured and far from fit, but when I'm back I'd love to get out for a ride with you! Daniel

This is very valuable content & it seems it resonates quite deeply with many of us, so thanks for posting this up here Dave. I've thankfully never gone down the booze avenue - tee total all my life - but I had other demons (I was a workaholic business owner) so listening to what you're saying & how you're putting together your coping mechanisms ie accountability makes such a lot of sense. Such a great channel you've got anyway, one of the few I regularly look out for.
