The Wisdom of Odin is a vlog of my journey through Norse Paganism, a way to assist others along their journey, and a place to promote a positive image for all of paganism.
While I personally declare myself as a Norse Pagan, I speak on topics that also involve aspects of Asatru, Heathenry, and other pagan identities such as Slavic/Celtic/Germanic paganism.
The Wisdom of Odin is not associated or affiliated with any orginizations religious or politcial in nature. This channel/community is inclusive to all but is also non-political.
All gatherings held through the Wisdom of Odin and its extended community are private events held and organized by the members of the community. The only service the Wisdom of Odin provides is a place to connect with others of similar beliefs in the old ways.

Literally every person who ever made a video about norse paganism has the book from neil gaiman in their bookshelf in the background 🤣 I have it myself and I really love it ❤ I am a beginner pagan and I am really looking for knowledge about that topic...most of the videos that I see on yt are just about wicca/witchcraft, but I am more only pagan and especially norse pagan so I am really glad that I found your channel!! 😊 Greetings from Germany

I think I have it on my kindle from when I first came to this path, but honestly it's actually a terrible book and should never be recommended to anyone. It will only cause confusion when new Heathens move on to the better books. If you seek out academic, practicing Heathens who uncover truth through historical reconstructionist paths (basically recreating what our ancestors practiced without adding any modern influence), they will tell you Neil's work is his own personal interpretation, with added stuff/fluff (that was never in the original Eddas and sagas), and he is not even a believer in our path. It would be similar to Christians reading a version of the Bible written by Satanists or Muslims or Atheists. Who would support that and believe the book holds any accuracy!?! I'm pretty sure someone told me that Gaiman is either a Christian or Jewish. And I totally get it that just about all of our original sources were written by Christians, but there is a difference. And I'm not criticizing you or the video OP. I'm even admitting that I own his book. I just cringe when I see it being recommended. If you want historical accuracy, seek out Robert Sass and aldsidu.com for continental Germanic AND Norse Heathenry teachings. It is about as close as you will come to learning and implementing a similar path that our ancestors were on before the Christian influence/conversion. Robert is also on Facebook with a private group (Aldsidu: Saxon Heathenry) and a FB public page (Germanic Heathenry). Good luck!

C Füchs expect there would be things included in it like different many versions of the myths we would include the entire prose and Poetic Edda, ang The nine books of danish history. It would include every versions of the nibelungs like the Poetic Edda version, the saga of the Volsungs, and German version the nibelungenlied. It would also include many other things pertaining to the Anglo Saxons and continental Germanic tribes. It would also include many sagas like hrolf kraki, Volsung saga, Ragnar lothbroks saga, King Gautrek, Halfdan Eysteinsson, and some historical sagas from heimskringla, Færeyinga saga, The history of the earls of Orkney, and some more entertaining sagas like egil skallagrimsson, Najals saga, Laxdæla saga, Eyrbyggja saga, the vineland sagas, The tale of Grettir the strong, Víga-Glúms saga, Kormáks saga, Bandamanna saga, hrafnkel frey's godi and so many sagas with pagan themes in them. It will also contain things like Beowulf and some other Anglo Saxon poems with mythical references. So I would rather call it a collection of heathen primary sources than a Viking bible. It will contain probably two versions of Baldurs death. It may be like three small volumes.

What if Odin was one of us!? I find this belief fascinating. It has been debated whether he was truly the "All-Father" and many believe this seeped in thanks to the Christian influence of an omnipotent, omniscient sky god. They tried to change Odin to be more like the Christ myth's god "the Father." Some linguists believe Odinn was NOT the All-Father but actually the mistranslation should've read "the All-Orderer" or Bringer of Order. This makes more sense. I also agree that our gods were once humans who attained Legend status and their reputations catapulted them into the "god realm." It is very difficult in 2021 to separate ourselves from the influence of the Abrahamic religions and Buddhism/Hinduism. Our ancestors had their own original, organic culture and spirituality, and I'd be more honored to know I am descended from "the gods" than subservient to magical spirits in outer space and the clouds.

I just wanted to drop in and say your videos have been a great help for me over the past few days. I have recently had an experience that has me on this new path in my life. I can't even put into words the feelings I have. I have never been religious in my life by any means, but recently my feelings have shifted. I had what I can only describe as a dream, but it was so much more than that. Everything about it was real, and I can't even rationalize it. I don't really know how to reach out to you directly so I figured I would start here and see where I end up.

I am at the beginning of my journey with Norse paganism, but I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a pagan. I am very spiritual and study lots of different pagan teachings but my search for knowledge on Norse paganism has not been as fruitful as most other forms of paganism due to the lack of written historical information and due to the way early Christians twisted the teachings of these ancient people. I’m so grateful I found your channel though, you are truly doing an amazing thing by teaching this subject and getting this information out there, and by making it very plain that paganism is a personal journey and it will be different for everybody. I love how you separate fact from personal belief as well. When I search for knowledge on any subject I like to look at the facts and make my own personal inferences from those facts so your channel is perfect to help guide me. I very much look forward to go on this journey with you and I wish you great success on your own personal journey. Keep up the great work

I would suggest also if you haven't read it "the viking spirit" by Daniel McCoy its such a fantastic read it is part history book part a compilation of the myths. The first part covers how the vikings practiced their faith and the second gives stories of the gods but trying to retell them with as much historical accuracy as possible. Also its not wildly expensive (at least here in the uk) which is also a bonus! Also the asartu was an interesting choice are you not put off by the controversy surrounding them?

@xbox_cheeto5338

That last book seems like a good book to read to understand Caesar's and Tacticus' writings all in one. Have you read either of their works and if so what is your view on them? I think they give a good glimpse into the early religion and also displays some of the early hierarchical forms that we had both politically and religiously and just how varied it was tribe to tribe. Also what is your opinion on the local folklore and folktales of regions in relation to its religious importance? I think it matters to a great extant as it forms as the main basis we can use to re-cement the decentralized nature of the religion with local spirits and legends creating a living breathing world and thus a living religion. Some legends even give us gods not seen elsewhere, such as Theodoric the great who was in a way 'canonized' as a sort of god as leader of the great hunt alongside other figures like Odin or Perchta. So far I have read an Icelandic folklore book, a Rhineland one, and a British isles one of varying locations with each story stating its county or nation of origin, and now I am reading the Grimm brothers' works. I hope to see what they say on their 'Teutonic mythology' book after and what connections they make, and it seems important from the brief amounts I read relating to it online. So just to bring my point back to its route: what is your opinion on folklore for the faith and its storied existence?
@TheWisdomOfOdin
@TheWisdomOfOdin 4 жыл бұрын
I think local folklore is an extremely important part of the faith. It gives us our individual identities as people and “tribes” while universally we may all worship Odin and Thor, there may be stories between faiths of individual hero’s and divine experiences that make individual groups special. It just makes us more complex and colorful. In my vision for how things should be “structured” as long as everyone adheres to the pillars of paganism that I’ve talked about (honoring the gods, the spirits, and the ancestors) we are free to explore our own unique folk identity as pagans.
@xbox_cheeto5338
@xbox_cheeto5338 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheWisdomOfOdin Yes that's a good point about the pillars. I find many modern groups fixate on only the gods, or maybe rarely ancestors in only a very brief sense. But folklore and mysticism can both help us to connect with these other integral entities within the faith in a more meaningful and deeper sense. Have you ever encountered a spirit?

Ha, I got my copy of the barnes and noble collectibles version a few days ago. Absolutely love it. One thing I do dislike is that it is a book you need to slowly open and slowly stretch out its spine etc it wont lay open flat. Unlike for example the canterbury collectibles that even brand now can be opened and laid flat and will stay perfectly flat. That said yhe barnes and noble books have far better paper, lots of details chapter headers etc done in art styles, and often illustrations. The covers seem prettier in general although I'm not a fan of the recent trend of gluing stuff on the cover, (see the B&N versions of the brothers Grimm, complete Lovecraft etc happy the norse book doesn't have that). Lastly in general despite the spines being more elaborate. I think the CC spines look prettier and more uniform. The barnes and nobles spines are overdone at times. Or look too contemporary when I prefer my leather bounds to look like ancient tomes on my shelf lol

So I have a question for you, if odin doesn't drink unless loki drinks do you think we should offer loki wine, mead, beer, etc.... at the same time we offer drink to odin?

It’s an interesting thought. But I don’t believe I’ve heard of anyone having problems giving offerings of drink to just Odin. Could be an interesting way to connect with Odin.

In my second series on Norse pagan books I talk about a book called Gods Own County it’s a collection of pagan songs and poems. They are both informative, fun, and great representations of the active faith!

Hello good sir. My name is Christopher. I commented on your video of 15 best verses of Havamal. Like I said in other post I don't have much money to buy books even though I did love reading when I was younger. I make my money like the elders.... With my hands. I work the land and live of it. I want to be more in touch with my ancestors beliefs. I know little of the mythologies but I can learn that much easier than how and what they did to live. Like when and what to sacrifice. How to do it. The seasons and times I need to do blessings and the such. Please if you can inform me on that kind of book I would greatly appreciate it. I am of the northern back ground. Irish, Scottish, English, Saxons, Anglo Saxons, Germanic, norse and the such who intermingled with the great British isles is my background. Sorry for the long message and any help you can give this green horn would be a blessing. May the Gods give you many blessings for your help and sharing of knowledge. Thank you

uh tolkien didn't teach norse mythology. he taught old english and other languages. he was also a devote catholic but I agree that he did see the world in a different way and did pull heavily from the mythologies.
