@Dr.C_Stag

rob roberts True, but his shovel is more than 4 times their combined income and he JUST started. If million dollar student loan dude lived on $35K a year like a police officer or high school teacher, he’s out of debt in 5ish years with no increase in pay. It was stupid to go into that kind of debt, but let’s just say if they both lived on $35K annually, proportionally speaking: $192K/$25K= 7.68 years. (PhD) $1000K/$215K= 4.65 years. (DDS) (Doing Dave Ramsey math with no interest or taxes) After both are out of debt, Dr. Million dollar loans is going to be making $250K a year and Dr. Dumb Political Science PhD will be making $60K. Moral of this story, yes debt is dumb, but this dude takes the cake of stupid. Not only did he go into a bunch of debt, but he went into debt for a stupid job with little to no market value. Our institutions are pumping out PhD’s in all the stupid stuff right now and hyper-saturating the marketplace with useless PhD’s. Million dollar student loan dude is way ahead of this dumba$$.

The closest to partying was going camping, in the mountain behind where he lived, with his sleeping bag and tent. My daughter who was older graduate with zero debt and all kinds of free money, by spending hours researching book in the library. I graduate with two doctorates with zero debt. Lets say we got a LOT of free money, between the three of us. (Different era for me.)

It really depends. Debt happens when getting a Masters then a PhD. But in STEM fields you don't pay tuition as a PhD student and get a stipend. One thing my college professor told me was if you want to get a Masters in Biology or Chemistry, apply to the PhD program directly because of the reasons stated above, then after 2 years and you dont want to stay, change your date of graduation and program and leave. You automatically get the Masters (once you defend a thesis) without paying a dime.

In India, PhD students do not pay any fee at all. In fact, they receive a scholarship during the period they pursue their PhD. I hope some solution can be found in the US too.

We need to do a better job of telling our 16, 17, and 18 year old kids to pick a school they can afford and get a degree that is marketable. We have to. A 5 min call with Dave after the damage is done can't fix $135k in debt for a non marketable degree. Just some quick math, but they are only paying $128 toward a loan that is accruing $600 worth of interest a month. In 4 years when they get to it the debt will have grown to $160k and their monthly payment will be $1,700 to pay it off in 10 years from that point. They will never get rid of this.

I just don't understand women going into debt for something only to end up staying home with the kids. Probably the best plan for those who marry and want children young is to keep your 20-30yr to raising your family, maybe work on some side courses, and when the kids are that bit older, go back to school if that's what you need. By 35 you should have raised kids and a solid education. 35 is not old to get into the workplace.

@speakingtruths4215
@speakingtruths4215 4 жыл бұрын
I’m really not that old, but younger people really need to have a clear path of what they will be doing BEFORE they get married, have kids, and accrue six figure debt. BEFORE you go to school, whether parents pay for the education or not, you’ve just got to have a path for how you will support yourself and your family down the road. Really look at the cost of your education. For example, you can’t be dumb enough to spend 100k plus on an education when you are getting involved in a career that will top out at 35k. You’ve GOT to think about this early on.

I am curious what exactly people have put on these credit card balances these days..I hear $8000-$30000 balances..eating out every night? Household items? Weddings, parties? When we were in our 30’s, 40’s, we probably never had more than $1000 (ever) in CC debt & I worked extra (hospital RN) to pay it down..we had nice, modern homes. Kids went to private high schools & we cash-flowed college X2. I am just amazed how everything is on plastic these days..why? The lifestyles people seem to want these days really need 2 incomes.

In a lot of disciplines you actually get paid to get your PHD because you're teaching undergrads as you do it. You don't make a fortune, but it's more than enough to cover basic living expenses and you have no debt when you get your degree. It seems crazy to me why you'd pay out of pocket for anything where the ultimate goal is to be a professor, as there are plenty of ways to do it where you'd be in the same position and be getting paid the whole time.

As for his wife same thing get a full time teaching gig and she goes from 28k to 50k. That's 50k covered!
