I was 16 and with two of my friends in Berkeley riding our skateboards towards the BART station to head home to watch the baseball game when it hit. We told our parents we were going to skate in SF, but we changed our minds and went to Berkeley instead. Lucky us. I thought something on my skateboard broke because one second I'm riding down the street and the next I'm tumbling down it. It took about 2 seconds for me to realize that it was an earthquake. I knew it was bad when we finally got to the BART station and all the power was knocked out and also the payphones weren't working. Like you said, no cellphone so no way of getting in contact with anyone to let them know we were OK. After freaking out thinking we were going to be stranded in Berkeley we thankfully got a free ride from a taxi driver who lived in Concord. He drove us from Berkeley to the Concord BART station and then we road our skateboards from there to my aunts house in Pittsburg. That night and then the following weeks were pretty stressful because like you I hated going on bridges and be stuck under anything. I'm still like that all these years later 😬

Oh wow, you have an amazing story and definitely a higher power was watching out for you all when you decided to stay in the East Bay to skate. Holy moly, Concord BART to Pittsburg is a long trip. I took piano lessons in Pittsburg. 🙂 It is hard to explain what the week following felt like but you totally get it. Ya, I still hate being on the bottom deck of the Bay Bridge. Thank you for sharing your story with me. I’m glad you and your friends stayed safe. ❤️
