As a welder that all looks temporary. A lot of times when cranes are involved you get it in place and put temporary braces and things because you don’t want the crane sitting there getting paid by the hour to just hold parts. When you can get them up and come back and permanently mount them later. Also the channel is perfect for that type of brace. We use 6 inch like that piece all the time. If it’s bent then it was probably bent when they put it up. I’d honestly make a list of all the things you are seeing that concern you. Write it down. Take pictures all of that. Then give the crew time. I’m pretty confident they will come back and redo all of that now that the crane is gone and they can do it on their own dollar. Just my thoughts from a welder and some one who has hung steel before. But also never hurts for you to look and see what looks off to you and keep up with it as thing progress
@kdkracing47463 жыл бұрын
The bent metal was on the catwalk, not the brace. It was installed incorrectly to begin with and both Cooper and Cole recognized this. That is why Cole is so stressed out. He is probably discovering other shoddy work and just didn't put it on KZbin. To put thise incident on video indicates its importance. If it were my $1M I would be checking it out continuously while it is being constructed as well! If it were a temporary "fix" an ethical contractor would have explained it to the property owner at the outset and not leave it to be discovered incidently by him. If you are in construction, you know what I am talking about!

Question on the welding, well maybe more of a comment. I notice the Channel isnt painted, that makes me think it is not finished yet. I agree those welds look bad and not finished. The tab is bent and causing a side to sag. The gap under the other side might have been done on purpose to level the walk. It will still need shimmed and supported to be made strong enough to hold the weight. The C channel usage is out of my knowledge range as opposed to using an I beam. Yes I beam would be stronger but that walk is supported in a few areas so it isnt the entire structural support. The fact it isnt painted yet leads me to believe they are not yet finished with that area. Did any of that i just said make sense to anyone else ??
@codylapoint3 жыл бұрын
I'm a union iron worker, installing things like that is what I do every day. It looks to me like they either were missing the proper beam that goes there, or someone doesn't know how to read a set of drawings. The shotty welds look like a 60xx series rod which shouldn't be used for anything structural. The welder was set way too hot, likely because they were to lazy to grind the galvanizing off of the steel and tried to burn through it. The fumes from welding or burning galvanized coatings can cause heavy metal poisoning, and have negative effects on your long term health with continuous exposure. Found that out the hard way, would not recommend. Like others have said give them the opportunity to fix it, it is possible that they just slapped something temporary in there to get the exspence of the crane off their backs. It can easily cost 10k per day to have a relatively small crane on-site after you figure in the setup and transport charges, fuel fees, operator wages, and the hourly rate for the crane itself. Make a punch list for all contractors involved and demand the things on it are completed to your expectations before issuing final payments. If you have already payed them they will automatically move your project to the last one on their priority list. This is important.
@marlboroman718183 жыл бұрын
Yep, looks like a 6010 rod was used to burn thru the galvanizing. The contractor shouldn't have used C channel even in a temp role, says they were more worried about saving a days rental because they didn't have the steel there when it was supposed to be.

First off I can guarantee knowing that millwright crew the way I do that that is a temporary mount in order to get the crane that was costing more than $200 an hour off of your site not to cost you additional cost or the crew or whoever happens to be in charge of paying the crane more money than needs be, the angle irons and welds that are there are sufficient to temporarily hold it in place until the work is actually finished and happens even at co-ops. Unless the company has their own crane they attempt to save the customer is much money on the crane as they can
@138NastyNate3 жыл бұрын
Thats what I said. I think it was just tacked up there to hold it temporarily until they can come back and put it in place and weld it properly. C-channel can definitely be weight-bearing; a lot of utility trailers and industrial catwalks are built out of C-channel and are fine when the proper size is used. Somebody had their mind somewhere else when they called that done, I wouldn't accept it and would hold payment until it is corrected, your general contractor should be the one discovering the flaws and correcting them before you are aware. My Grandad had a Sugar cane farm in Mackay, Qld, Australia and he always had side businesses. The Sugar cane was supported by Hay, Sorghum and beef cattle. Then the Café in town was also present. When I was a teenager he borrowed money and did a Service station and supermarket. He was considered a well off farmer but he pretty much lived hand to mouth for 40 years and it was only the last 20 years that saw money coming in above basic subsistence. So most people work 40 years then retire, he worked 40 years before he got a decent income then worked another 20 years before he passed. Farms cost a lot of money to run, the income for an entire year can be lost in one storm so keep up the good work Cole.

A job like that does not actually get finished off while the crane is on site, those welds and small pieces of angle iron were to stabilize the catwalk to get the crane off site and save Cole and DC money when you figure a crane typically cost more than $200 an hour the millwright crew does the bare minimum to stabilize a catwalk in order to get the crane out of there and then they go back and actually finish Mount the catwalk in such a way that it is safe and secure. Looking at what Cole had shown and knowing this particular millrite company that is the bare minimum temporary amount that they felt would be safe enough to secure the catwalk in place in order to finish securing it and permanently mounting

I have dealt with enough Farmers to understand these concerns and I have also dealt with this millwright crew enough to understand that the concerns currently are unwarranted but with Kohl's feelings on it being what they are him voicing those concerns to the crew would get further than all these people who do not know what's going on who has not been on the job site and does not know the engineering behind it to give him misinformation and or compounding his concerns when they are not necessary. That being said I hope he doesn't follow up video that has all this information on and the same people that were bashing the crew if their lack of knowledge is forcing or creating a misinformation about what needs to happen or what has happened about this job will comment on that video once having all the information and being able to give an educated response.
