Just some things to consider. Find a way to change your home address, I know many OTR drivers do this. FL is currently the worst State for Insurance. Also if you lease on to a carrier as an owner/operator you can use their insurance. Way cheap, like $185/mth. You would be exclusive, but they pay dead head, gas surcharge, etc. The rate may be lower, but your expenses would come way down. If you plan on building a fleet, many carriers actually prefer this, so you can add vans/drivers as you scale. Best of luck to you.

I came across your channel on my search for insights on life as an Otr cargo van driver. Coming from 12yrs OTR experience in a semi to this past year at home FT college student majoring in accounting. Cant shake the road and want to get back out there. Thought maybe cargo van driver was a happy medium as for gym life, FT student, traveling, and making money. Driving a smaller vehicle I could fit easier at gyms and healthier grocery stores with less restrictions and planning involved. I dig the fact you can get to dog parks with ease and I can brainstorm alot of other great places you can go in a van versus semi. I will watch some more of your videos to get a better idea on the direction I want to go; cargo van or back in a semi. Great videos! Thanks for the content

Thanks man but I actually think I’ve had it a lot easier than most. Given the fact that I’ve had this KZbin thing and many great things have come from that. Connecting with people helps with feeling lonely, I got my van a lot easier than most due to a subscriber looking out, etc. not saying this all came to me because it took effort and action on my end but it kind of did. I’m just grateful man.

Thank you right back for watching man. I’m never getting a gas engine sprinter again unless I do only local work. I lost my ass in this van and plan on waiting til the election or a little after to sell mine and get a diesel engine. Gas will go 200-400k miles if you do 100k miles a year in Otr that goes fast. Diesel will go 600-1,000,000 miles. Only reason I got this van was it was easy to get into with seller financing.

So a company that I work for bought one of these vehicles and it's the only one they have compared to the 20 other different types and when I was told to drive this one for the first time they said it did not have a way to put it directly into park and that you had to put it in reverse hold the brake and hit the shut-off button on the engine. Didn't help that the person told me watch out this thing might roll-off make sure it's in park and then every time I put it in park the ridiculous way that they told me the vehicle with them roll for a second just a little bit and then stopped. I had about 30 little heart attacks that day delivering all these stops and having that roll happen and then I figured out like halfway through the day how to put it directly into Park. Then still rolls for a second unless the ground you're on is completely zero degrees flat. Other than that the vehicle was nice lol. Nobody else to this day still knows how to work it properlySo a company that I work for but one of these vehicles and it's the only one they have compared to the 20 other different types and when I was told to drive this one for the first time they said it did not have a way to put it directly into park and that you had to put it in reverse hold the brake and hit the shut-off button on the engine. Always good watching. The likes and the differences, different equipment and ways of "gettin' er done." Please dont mistake constructive criticism for insults. It is not. It's simply part of the brotherhood. Drivers already been there, you might want to sit for a spell and gather some wisdom. And be thankful. How many times have you walked all across the parking lot, passing people, then get to the door and it's locked/closed. No one could roll down the window to shout out, "THEY'RE CLOSED." If I'm coming back down from the mountain top, I have enough compassion to tell you, the spring has dried up. You can keep climbing if you want. But I'll show you, my bucket is empty. Sure! Carriers, dispatchers, brokers hurt in a down market. But I assure you, drivers are hurting more and get wiped out exponentially moreso. We're the bottom feeders. And I think in order to survive driving, we need a five-digit cushion. My mechanical breakdowns/failure were, $2570, $2464, $1400, $750. And several months ago I witnessed a driver's $7000 mechanical hit. Stay in the office unless your goal is sightseeing. It's not if, but when.

@ExpeditingAmerica 11 ай бұрын
I appreciate the “constructive criticism “ That’s kinda why I set aside 10% from each job I do. If this business were to suck me dry I think it would already be doing so. Also warranties, and keeping up with maintenance help prevent any problems. But the load I just recovered is a prime example of what you’re saying. It cost 9k to fix it. Bud I use the model those people taught me which is 10% from each load to repair etc. thank God I haven’t had major problems but have had a few small ones I had to deal with. That’s any business tho. They all have costs and expenses. I’ve ran many businesses and this is is the easiest one to manage. But I appreciate your time my friend ;)

@@ExpeditingAmerica Appreciate your enthusiasm and providing some good viewing, knowledge and insight. As a grandpa it's good seeing aggressive young entrepreneurs. Showing us some hope for our future society. I think it's around seven? Most millionaires have gone broke seven times. Whatever ...you get it. It's not so much the goal, but more the journey. As I write, I am down for transmission failure 1700 miles from home. Warranty, maintenance etc all good, but I cannot recover fully from a hit like this. 22 days and almost $2000 to lodge and survive. Rolling every rewards points programs I have and scraping anything to survive. Unable to generate income. I feel we must be running with a five-digit savings cushion at least in my experience, is necessary to survive out here. And I would disagree, "if this business were to suck you dry, it would have by now." In my experience it is insidious. The Law of attrition. Large and tiny things slowly wear away sometimes unbeknownst. 190 mph until suddenly into the wall with 9 laps to go. Those tires had 20 more laps! What the heck? Attrition.....gradual failure over time. I've seen new Transmissions back on the bench after 23k, 1000 mi, 200 mi. Then you're down. Regardless of any warranty or maintenance. Warranties are the worst. They don't make money on them, so you're not a shop priority. So you're down, for a long time usually. Courtesy car?? No they're all out, etc. I used to sell. Certified Sales Ford Lincoln Mercury certified pre owned. Lesson in life: Dealerships, manufacturers etc., don't write "Warranties". Attorneys write Warranties. And they are written to diminish or even eliminate any risk to the "warranty issuer". You'd be fascinated to see the math, algorithms and actuarial science that goes into Warranties. ..or any type of insurance, to if possible, eliminate any risk to the issuer. Is why I cringe when I hear someone say, "I'm protected by the warranty." All of this, across America , is why the smartest of large successful companies have determined, "We can't afford to maintain fleet facet of our operations, so we'll pass it onto Owner Operators whom have not performed the projected actuarial science trials, and will "blindly" stumble forward into the pitfalls of this area of the industry." "We no longer want any part of it." Down for 22 days and counting. Warranty. The silver lining are the experiences along the way. Bittersweet enjoyment of how the world works. Stop and smell the roses. Godspeed!

I hear YOU and your experience. And I take heed to the words. But with all due respect your path or anyone else’s path is not mine. And hell you could be absolutely correct in my case and I may fail. @@ExpeditingAmerica No sir, I do hear/see you 1000%, crystal clear. I will conclude with one final true example which has to do with anything "harmful" in the total mix, which may sabotage your dreams. I was performing security at an fine arts gallery. An absolute beautiful tractor trailer 53', pulled up to the dock. A reefer filled with decadent artwork. A married team. Sweet happy couple just killing it in 2009. All smiles, describing to me in detail, their 20 year plan which by the numbers yielded 4-million dollars in retirement savings! Even I was excited. Until I noticed they took a break, .....to smoke cigarettes. Yep. Smokers. To this day, I remember watching the cigarette of the wife burning while asking myself, "20 years??" Anything harmful that would sabotage your projected dreams. I'm sure multiple side hustles are designed to grow your portfolio. Not to plug a hemorrhaging business venture. Again, this is why successful Companies don't "drive" their own shtuff. To avoid the bleeding... just in fuel alone, not to mention insurances and skyrocketing auto parts, gouging repair costs and down time. Hope you are the exception to the rule. Looking forward to future videos showing us how to avoid the pitfalls and send our portfolios to the moon! With your level of determination, you'd be the one to do it! 🙏

That stuff is pretty confidential. It’s kinda taboo but what’s confusing. Bol tells you the shipper the reciever, what your hauling etc. if you get pulled over it’s a manifest for what you have on board. You don’t do anything but get it signed by shipper and receiver. The RC is the same thing but has the rate the van is making. Let me know what’s confusing

At this point what percent of your loads come from repeat or contracted companies? Versus load boards? I’m hearing the boards suck and morons are bidding 60 cent a mile to get loads! Wanting to get into it but I’m hearing way more negative than positive. Please tell me your thoughts.

Repeat brokers or repeat shippers? I hear lots of things from lots of people too. But I never listen to others when building my own business. Especially in a business with 90% turnover rate. You will hear way more negative than positive. There will always be people doing work for cheap. I don’t care if you’re doing construction or selling lemonade. I don’t call them morons or anything because people gotta do what they gotta do to survive. Load boards suck for some people and they don’t for others. It’s all about the hustle
@sggamer2086

@@ExpeditingAmerica I guess I repeat brokers or shippers really. Or are you just hustling the load boards blocking out all the noise from everyone else? very good perspective and thank you for replying. I’ve been following you and a few others for a while now and I’ve done so much research my head wants to explode lol. (Analysis paralysis). I calculated that my business would need 52 cents a mile to cover everything. Meaning anything over would be profit. I see you and a couple others averaging around 1.00 a mile which would definitely be worth it but I’m seeing 90 percent of the other guys saying and posting 60/70 cent a mile loads claiming brokers are just taking the lowest bids. I believe you 100 percent about the hustle for sure and not worrying about what anyone else is doing. It’s just I have it calculated to take 15-20k to get me up and running, taking the big scary leap in to business with a family to support, etc. So just trying to see if it’s worth it. I can’t afford to drive 10k miles a month for 10 cent profit you know. I know we are never fully ready to ever take the leap but I value your opinion and expertise on the subject.
@ExpeditingAmerica
@ExpeditingAmerica Жыл бұрын
@@sggamer2086 your cost to run per mile is pretty accurate. Glad to see you did your research. Best of luck to you. It’s a simple easy one man business if you don’t over complicate it. I just mainly use my carrier. They look for loads while I’m driving. Bidding and all that is a pain and while 14% isn’t peanuts it’s worth it to me. I try booking loads on sylectus but haven’t had luck yet

I always have big respect for someone hustling and working their way toward their goals. I am retired but still want to work and am considering getting into the expediting business. Based on the things you have said, I don’t see you making an amount that is worth your time. I you making about $22.50/hr. I think that is a high estimate. If you hired a driver then you would break even. I just see you selling your time. If my assumptions are correct, then you have bought a job. The test of a real business is a business that will operate without you and be profitable. Otherwise, you have bought a job. How can you scale without profit? Please don’t misunderstand me. My comment is meant to be constructive. I am just stating what I see. I hope that I am wrong and I wish you the best.

Put me out of business? I don’t think so but it definitely is high. But even with maintenance (which I just did spark plugs, transmission, fuel pump, and a few other things tires next month) Bout to bring it down to $950 a month here shortly. But I’ve planned for these expenses ahead of schedule as well as set aside 10% from each load to cover this stuff. Cargo in Florida is not cheap my friend. And I’ve never met a Otr expeditor playing $25 a week for insurance. If you could point me in that direction that would be great but chances are I’ve called that insurance company. So my net average a month is 6k to own a business pay all my bills and have something I do when I want and how I want. I can and will grow it so those numbers are just one van. Not to mention I’m hardly taxed on it due to write offs out the ass for this business. People also miss out on the fact my KZbin makes money and I wouldn’t have my KZbin without this business.
