My 2-door G-Wagon Truck Tour - 1991 Mercedes Benz G300D

It's really called a G-Wagen, short for Gelandewagen which means off-roading vehicle, but if hashtags have taught me anything it's well, nothing.
ANYWAYS! I bought this truck 2 years ago. It's a 1991 two door Mercedes G-Wagon, which I bought in Germany and imported here to the US. They never sold 2 door G-Class' in the states, so this is a pretty unique truck to have!! I have modified it pretty significantly. Here I take you on a tour of it and tell you everything I've done. If you see me rolling around Los Angeles be sure to throw up a Shaka and yell YEWWWW at me!!

Cole, G class is in a class of it's own and modifying it to fit what you like is totally awesome. I have a 1990 LWB 250GD that I bought when I was in Italy. I have done a lot in restoring it and I love the thing. My setup as of now is all stock. I plan to change out the front and rear seats with the Mercedes ML 320 leather seats. The current ones I have in mine are the original bucket uncomfortable military grade ones that I dislike. Upgrading to the leather heated ones is gonna allow me to enjoy it more. I also want to tint the windows and maybe a small stereo, fender flares, rims and roof rack. It's a slow project for me. Keep up the good work and hope to see more in your build.

@@colewalliser easier as there are more of them, but they can be more pricey than what I've seen in the US. Also the places you can go in the US are much better, especially California. 👌

Very cool truck! For years I worked at car dealers and have sold many of these. Unfortunately I was never able to own one of my own or even remotely get close to off-roading and even trying out one of those three locking diffs... Super cool rig man. I like it very much, especially with the tasteful mods that you have done. plus it's a stick in diesel in my opinion better than what is around new from Ben's right now in the states

I love it, I'm a fellow G-wagon guy. I've been slowly building out my 2001 G500 and really inspired by what you've done to yours. I've also got a Pioneer headunit with upgraded speakers, getting Falken Wildpeaks. I actually really like the look of the front runner roofrack setup and accessories: 1) Is it the TALL or STANDARD height mounts? 2) Was there any reason behind choosing which side for the awning to pop out or does it extend towards both sides? Hope to see more stuff, keep it up!

Hi Cole, first of all props on your amazing vids! I just bought a stock mercedes 280GE from 1988 and was wondering how you attached the fender flares onto your car? Did you have to drill any holes or is there any specific mounting material you got with yours?

Europa Motors in New Mexico had the franchise for G-wagens in the US. They federalised them, at great expense, and sold them in the 80s and 90s, mostly to rich people and celebrities. It was only in the late 90s the Mercedes North America started importing them.

What a fantasticly cool project man! I live in Belgium, so they are a bit more common here. From your experience... does the G300D have enough power to drive in regular highway traffic? That's one thing that still keeps me hesitating to buy one. How is the fuel economy? And do you have the auto or manual transmission? Is the wind noise on the highway as bad as it is in for example a land rover defender? Sorry for the multiple questions, but I'm very interested in hearing from your experience! I can answer to at least one of your question - his G is manual :) This is old school truck I suppose about a 90/100k per hour is the sweet speed for cruising, all non turbo are little (or quite) a bit underpowered, but the whole idea of this beauty is the off-road abilities. Off the road is where it shines at its full glory. It is also cool to go to the coffee, but with the stupid regulations we getting in EU it will getting harder and harder to use it as daily drive :(

Who’d you work with on CA smog compliance? I’m about to pick up a Japanese import which has already been registered with clean import, VIN, and title, but it’s not CA smog (CARB) compliant. Would love some pointers so I know how much to budget.

you need to learn about wheels and lifts. This is the most uneducated build, suspension is not good or safe and the spacers are not good or safe.

“but my wheel bearings” you say? There’s no difference in load applied if you chose a wheel in a different offset vs a proper hub centric bolt on wheel spacer. Nothing dangerous about it. His suspension is also fine. Coil spring spacers are used to adjust height On various corners of Mercedes cars from FACTORY. The 40-50mm he has are perfectly fine. Though, I would’ve had them installed on TOP of the spring in the cups.
