I'm so happy I planted Pluots in my small suburban backyard! They can be hard to come by in the grocery stores but they are one of my favorite fruits. Pluots are a hybrid of a plum and an apricot. They have a tangy/sweet flavor and a great texture. Watch to see what my Dapple Dandy and Flavor Grenade pluots look like and how much I was able to harvest this year.
Thanks for watching! If you haven't tried one before I suggest you ask around at farmers markets and see if you can get your hands on some pluots!

I live in SoCal too. Upland. There's a few hundred on my Flavor Grenade Pluot tree right now. Too many for me. I think I'll put them out on the sidewalk for people to take. Great video. You should go national. You have the perfect personality and delivery for TV.

Thank you so much! And a sidewalk giveaway is a great idea! I know we won't be able to eat through all of this year's fruit so I plan on giving a decent amount away as well.

I seen many of these trees at Home Depot last year and didn’t get one because I didn’t know what they were, one day I tasted one and it was an instant regret not getting a tree. This spring for sure I’m planting one. Last spring I planted 10 trees in my garden, this hobby is so fun

I'm in west covina. We grow many of the pluot/pluerry hybrids that are low chill. Dapple dandy is ok. Flavor Grenade is very reliable with consistent production and very good flavor. If i were to grow 1 pluot variety, that would be flavor king. it's #1 best flavor of all the stone fruits. Right behind it would probably be Spice Zee nectaplum. i know that on dave wilson's description of flavor king, it says 500 chill. But we have had very heavy crops from flavor king.

Thanks for the video. I planted my bare root Flavor Grenade Pluot last spring. Got great growth and a lot of flowers currently. Even with a crappy winter for chill. Now I dont know if any germinated....will need a few weeks to see. I'm in a lot different ckomate here in south Louisiana ( about 40 miles north of New Orleans). We get high humidity and mid 90's all summer, so all kinds of diseases and insects to worry about.
@herhomeandharvest
@herhomeandharvest Жыл бұрын
Hopefully those flowers mean you’ll get some fruit this year! It’s usually advised to thin the fruit off in the first couple years to allow the tree to grow a little stronger but I didn’t have the patience for that 😅. I also spray my trees with an organic copper fungicide and all seasons spray to help with bugs and diseases. Peach leaf curl is supposed to be very common here and I’m hoping I can avoid it!! 🤞

I really like them! I have found that when you pick them makes a big difference though. Sometimes they look ripe but aren’t and they end up really sour. If I wait a week or two to go back and pick more then they’re usually perfect. It can be hard to tell when they’re ripe because of their unique coloring. Some varieties even stay completely green when ripe! I hope you can find one in stores that you like and that you’re plum tree does well for you!!

@herhomeandharvest
@herhomeandharvest Жыл бұрын
I believe they would grow well in the tropics but I’m not sure how it would affect the amount of fruit you would get. I’ve seen other people online have success growing stone fruits in Hawaii so I would definitely say it’s worth a try! I might just try to pick a variety with the lowest chill hour requirements you can find.

My pluot trees are usually in full bloom by now and the peaches have usually leafed out, but this year the pluots are just getting started and the peaches are still covered in blossoms. Though it’s only about 2 weeks off so it could just be my microclimate.

I have one on order from Etsy (dapple dandy), what is the best way to plant in SoCal? Do you add fertilizer and if so what time of year? Thank you!
@herhomeandharvest
@herhomeandharvest Жыл бұрын
I fertilize every other month during their growing season with an organic fruit tree fertilizer. The best advice I got for planting was to not plant too deeply. Root rot can develop if it's planted too deep and it can kill the tree. Of all the trees I planted, my peaches and pluots have been the easiest/most forgiving. I hope yours will be too!

How long do pluots take to bear fruit usually?
@herhomeandharvest
@herhomeandharvest 5 ай бұрын
Most people will say about 3 years when planting from bare root but I got fruit off of the flavor grenade in the first year and dapple dandy in the second year. It is best to take off fruit the first year if you get any though so that the tree can put its young energy into developing a strong root system (definitely a hard sacrifice though!!).

@philiprobicheaux3040
@philiprobicheaux3040 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that won't work. Most fruit trees (all stone fruit) don't breed true by seed. Just like you are not identical to your parents. All fruit you buy in the store are grafted trees..basically clones, by taking wood from the existing fruit tree if interest and grafting it to another rootstock. Very few fruit trees are grown on their own roots.

I think you probably just never had a proper apricot if you perceive them as being bland. They are probably the most flavorful stone fruit.
@herhomeandharvest
@herhomeandharvest Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely possible. I grew up with an apricot tree but other than that I have only had store bought. I will say even though I don’t prefer apricots, I really like apricot jam!
@nexxogen
@nexxogen Жыл бұрын
@@herhomeandharvest I'm sure that's the issue, because store-bought apricots can really be horrible. I remember a few years ago my wife tried some apricots from an old tree my late grandfather had planted. She said it was like eating candy, and not just because of the sugar content. There's nothing like a good apricot. Until a few years ago, peaches were my favorite stone fruit, but now I think apricots have taken that spot. :) It's of course possible that you just don't like apricots, but the way you described it sounded like you haven't really tried any good ones.

Can I grow these trees in my grassy side yard, or do I have to get rid of the grass and sprinkler system?
@herhomeandharvest
@herhomeandharvest Жыл бұрын
I would recommend removing the grass in a 3ft radius around the trunk and avoid letting sprinklers hit that circle (especially if your lawn is watered frequently). That would give the tree a better chance but all that said my sister is successfully growing a peach tree in the middle of her lawn and she didn’t do any of those things!

@@meep1755 Good luck! I hope they produce well for you! There are a lot of great KZbin videos on pruning first year stonefruit trees when you get to that point. One of the ones I really liked was the Dave Wilson Nurseries videos when I was first researching growing fruit trees in my backyard. I loved their philosophy of backyard orchard culture. @herhomeandharvest
@herhomeandharvest Жыл бұрын
@@meep1755 because they are a cross between a plum and apricot, they will fruit similarly to those varieties. I have been told to expect the trees to bear fruit for 15-20 years (or more if they’re healthy) and all of my trees started producing fruit on either the first or second year. Though I would suggest thinning heavily the first year they set fruit so the tree can put more effort into developing strong roots.
