“Does anyone actually have year bingo cards?!” Yes. For the past 6 years, my best friend and I have made bingo cards predicting each others’ lives for the upcoming year. We just wrapped up our 2024 ones and made our 2025 ones. It is a much beloved tradition between us and keeps us appraised on each others major and minor life events despite living on opposite ends of the country and living very busy lives. It’s also a very fun way to call each other out on quirks. For example, her free space for me last year was “home renovation project is more complicated than expected” because I’m currently renovating a century home with a very weird history.

Hank, if you're looking into getting into video games again, Outer Wilds is a game that is specifically made for you: It's a scifi-archeology game, in which you can freely explore an alien solar system to figure out a mystery; namely how to escape a 22 minute time loop. This means you can play it for 22 minutes (or less), get one run in, figure out something new, make connections, uncover what's happening, and have an incredible time while not devoting much time to it. Many people, including myself, describe it as the one game they'd like to play for the first time again, it's a masterpiece. And it's also partially about music and why we make it, the other thing you mentioned in this video!

Fun fact: PEOPLE USED TO HAVE MONTHLESS DAYS. The whole "October being the 10th month" thing is related to this too! And extra fun fact: It's got nothing to do with Julius Caesar! We currently use the Gregorian calendar, which replaced the Julian calendar, which itself replaced the "Roman calendar." But here's the thing: The most commonly spread fun fact about this is that "The Roman calendar had 10 months that lined up with the months' names, but then Julius Caesar came in and added months for himself and Augustus did too and messed everything up" but that is actually not true. There were two versions of the Roman calendar. The old version is so old that historians are not sure if it was even real, but it had 10 months, and a 60~ day-long period in winter without months. And then, Numa Pompilius (753-672 BCE), 2nd King of Rome (not Julius Caesar!!) revised the Roman calendar into a new version, that shortened all the months and added January and February to the beginning of the year, shifting the names of September-December to the wrong places. So what about Julius Caesar? Well, July was named after him by a vote in the Roman Senate in 44 BCE, but the month already existed and was called Quintilis. And for August, it was renamed after Roman Emperor Augustus in 8 BCE and got 2 days added to it when the Roman calendar was replaced by the Julian calendar. But it was also already there and called Sextilis. The Julian calendar added leap days to keep seasons aligned with the months, but it did not add July and August! Those were already there!! Sorry, I went down this rabbit hole one day and was shocked to find that a common fun fact is just wrong. Also I am not a roman historian, and all this info is from Wikipedia, but also also, I feel like that's even more shocking, because it's not like it was hard for me to find all this stuff! This fun fact persisted even though the real information is pretty easy to find

That is a rabbit hole I've looked at many times but never followed. Kind of a face palm that it would have been an easy win. I have fantasized about a world with twelve thirty day months with a five or six day (leap year) month-less non-week time at the end/beginning. I would also reorganize the structure of the week to consist of ten days ordered thus: three workdays followed by one day off followed by three workdays finishing with a three day weekend.

4:25 This is actually not true. As a descendent of farmers, I can confidently say that harvest season is not in summer! It is in fall. We would get time off in the summer because it was simply too hot, and the rich kids always left school to go on vacation. So with all the students gone in the summer, the schools would simply shut down. Then that became the standard (not sure exactly when,but I would assume around the early 20th century)

Hank, the best calendar replacement is as follows: - Weeks have 6 Days (people work 4 rest 2). - Months have 5 Weeks, so 30 Days. - 4 (sometimes 5) Days fall "between" some Months, and are the major holidays.
@abhishuoza999216 күн бұрын
I like this because it preserves 12 months, which is important for dividing up a year in many ways (2,3,4,6). Each extra day can go at the end of every 3rd month, and leap year day is the extra extra day at the end of the year! Also way better work life balance!

I'm not sure where ska is at, but the swing revival never really went away, just faded underground. If you're really into live swing music, the bands mainly play for dancers now, be it weekly gigs or special events. The music has also evolved away from 90s pop influence and toward a more authentic sound from the _original_ swing era. It may or may not be your thing, but it's still there if you look for it. If what you meant was the fashions and 40s cosplay of the swing revival, that part _did_ fade away, mostly. (: A few female dancers do still make some effort at special events, but very few of the men do.

So, as I understand it, the year bingo card thing is a new thing and an alternative to resolutions. Rather than having one prolonged self-improvement project, you put smaller goals and events you want to happen on the card. So, instead of just having the large goal of "Hang out more with my friends", you could break it down to stuff like "Go visit John" or "Play games with [insert friend here]". At least, that's how one KZbinr I saw was doing it.
@brookeworley514016 күн бұрын

double checking some info about the public education system - The starting year for public school is really not as early as 1635, and is in fact closer to the early 1800's. Before that time, elementary school was the only thing being offered, and the class schedule and everything about it was vastly different from what we know today. The vast majority of the time that public schools have been around, agriculture was NOT the dominant industry in the US. The vast majority of time that Public School has been mandated in the US, industry was the primary motivating factor. We took summers off because it was cheaper not to have to cool the schools. It doesn't have to do with the harvest.

Oh man, you've got a couple slots on your bingo card I really want to see come true! Mainly, Canada joining the EU, I could see that being nice, and a Ska revival, because why the hell not? Pretty much everything else from the 90's has been brought back at least once.

1:34 - I also love that idea, which is why it’s how my D&D world works 😁 “Erenium occurs immediately after Bast. It is a horological black hole, not considered to be a part of any month or half cycle. It does not officially have days either, instead being a single 96-hour long period with no subdivisions, though most people will separate the day/night cycles as "days" when coordinating events or recounting stories. In most jurisdictions, Erenium isn't even "time", with the period not counting towards any contract or law specifying a duration. Legally speaking, Halbast ends, Venresdel begins, and no time passed in between.”
@Red_bxuaindgs16 күн бұрын
I love that 😮❤
@toryt368816 күн бұрын
The only problem with that time not officially occurring is, how do you deal with births/deaths?
@dawica16 күн бұрын
@@toryt3688You just assign them to first of the next year, like how Feb 29th babies have their birthdays on Mar 1st on non-leap years
@dawica16 күн бұрын
@@Red_bxuaindgshere’s the rest of the wiki entry, if you’re interested: In many cultures, the Erenium is seen as a time for new years celebration and is often met with festivals lasting the entire time. The rules for the length of Erenium are: - Erenium is 4 days. - Every 6 years, Erenium is shortened to 3 days. (Black Erenium) - Every 600 years, Erenium is kept at 4 days (White Erenium) This makes the average year 411.835 days long. This was believed to be the true length of a day at the time of the calendar's creation, but modern calculations have shown that the value to be approximately 411.8342 days. At that rate, the calendar will drift out of sync by roughly 1 minute and 26 seconds every year, gaining 1 day every millennium. Given that the calendar was adopted in 1560, it has already drifted three days out of sync, a number confirmed by historical records of astronomical events. Despite a 1-day correction in 3530, the calendar is still two days out of sync. *Black Erenium* To account for the fractional number of days in a year, every 6 years the Erenium is shortened to 3 days. This is known as a "Black Erenium" and is often met with indignation from those reluctant to lose a day of festivities. The previous Black Erenium occurred in 4628 and the next one will occur at the end of this year (4632). *White Erenium* Every 600 years, Erenium is left at 4 days. This is seen as a wonderful event. Despite Erenium only being kept at the usual length, White Ereniums have always been met with unusually grand spectacle, often bleeding over into the first week of Venresdel.

Hi hank! My new years resolution is also to spend more time with friends. My best friend since 2nd grade was diagnosed with grade 3 brain cancer at the tail end of December and it has really jolted me awake to the fragility of life. I watched your videos of your cancer journey as you were going through it so I'm glad to have that in my pocket. Not sure what else to say but yeah, be with your friends and family and loved ones. Thanks

Priests working under the instruction of Pope Gregory XIII, who created the perfect offset rules for leap years back in the early 1580s. The fact that they figured out way back then that "every 4 years, except years that are multiples of 100, unless it's a multiple of 400" was the perfect offset for the .242 of a day per year, will always amaze me.

I feel that with the finding time. It's hard to choose how to spend what little time remains, if any, after work, chores, and other responsibilities. Video games are fun, but with so little free time it can feel like a waste. But sometimes I just say "no, tonight I'm just going to play some games" and get my fix.

I can recommend trying to meet friends and trying to enjoy video games again at the same time: One of my friends plays games with me online and it helps me see playing the game as something I‘m allowed to do, because it‘s something we do together. This way gaming suddenly pops up on my list of important things to do. We’re far apart and I usually have trouble keeping in contact with people, but today we hit our 100th hour in one our favorite games and I am so grateful for her.
