Also my recommendation will be add nasturtiums to those tomato beds! Life changing I do 8 tomatoes per bed, basil, marigolds and nasturtiums in all 4 corners and it works wonders. I haven't seen one hornworm in like 3 years 🎉

As a COMPLETE beginner, I find just about every video on starting a garden, how to grow food, etc very overwhelming. I literally don't even know anything about soil or how to grow a plant. I guess I should start there? I have no land yet and am living in an apartment but I've started my learning journey as well as a journal to take notes and plan for my future garden. Does anyone have any advice or good learning resources for not just a beginner, but a dummy 😂

Michigan gardener here! While I have been growing things for many years, I still consider myself a beginner because there is still so much I don't know, so thank you for creating this video! I learned a lot from you :) Also, I grew luffa last year, it was super fun! I am in 6B and this is what I learned, so hopefully it can help you know how to adjust for yours. My Luffa took a very long time to produce fruit so if yours does the same be patient, and don't give up on it! It took 4/5 months for mine to flower and start producing fruit, and I was so close to giving up on it, so trust the process. I started my seeds indoor in march, transplanted in may and yielded full sized green crop in end of september/ early october, so unfortunately they did not dry out prior to our first frost, so I didn't get to make sponges with them. So, next time I think I'd try to start my seeds way sooner. The vines go crazy, they are super strong, and climb with tendrils and they can easily take over items nearby, so give them space. And I have never seen so many varieties of pollinators in my yard as I did this year, especially bees, so i'm not sure if it was from that but it was so cool to see! I'm so excited you are giving them a go. Best of luck with it, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Just so you know (I'm an entomologist) with japanese beetles the dead/squashed bodies of the beetles will let of a pgeromone that actually *attracts* more beetles, same with those pheromone traps. The smell technically will lead them into a spot to die but overall you may have more beetles showing up that you will have to deal with. Just figured might be helpful!

@@MorethanGardening I'm a new sub so I haven't watched many videos yet to get to know your garden yet but look forward to it. I started gardening a few years ago and really got into it last year. I love adding marigolds, nasturtiums, and herbs throughout the garden for color and to help deter pests. There are so many varieties and cultivars of plants we could try something new each year and never catch up. My friend has considered planting prickly pear on the outside of her fence to see if that keeps deer away. Not sure if they would care.

I have been gardening for 30 years. I personally do not add wood to fill the bottom of a raised beds as it encourages ants and wood bugs. I agree that in a perfect world it is good not to spray for pests. But with global warming we are now getting pests that I have never had to deal with in the past. Last year we had leafhoppers for the first time and I can still see them around when I am working in the yard in December. I did try the nematodes last year to no avail. I grow 1000 flowers from seed yearly but we have now put in a greenhouse and a raised beds potager and will be growing vegetables. Obviously we do not want to spray what we eat. For my bracica’s I will be covering with row cover for the cabbage moth. We will see how it works this year will be a trial. Subscribed to watch what you grow. :)

Last season I didn't start enough peppers and as soon as my choice of nursery started sale of peppers I bought a couple dozen and 2nd week I wanted just a few more and the ones I was raising from them mine was double or more in size and surprisingly they grew just about as fine as mine older plants to my surprise, The later ones from the nursery seem stunted and never caught up with anything staying half the normal size. Nearly 95 percent of insects help our garden I don't use poison either. Loofahs will draw more bees in your area after mid summer then anything else 6a Mid Ohio Starting your own seeds give you a choice of hundreds of tomatoes and peppers and other veggies

Lady I'm using sunflower as a cover crop, Don't disturb the sunflower don't dig or tilt just adding 1/2 to 1 cup bone meal near the old sunflower stumps and space the seedlings 10 further from each other than you normally do as they are going to thrive. Less work, less time and 1/3 watering necessary later. This I've done for the 5th season.To care for my soil I repeat the sunflower every third season. I plant mine tomatoes in a square setup having 4 seedlings in each square. Most importantly the raise in ground beds are about 10 inches high the first season setup and the 4 cages in a square are held together with wire ties and sunflower stalks from the first season keep them in a dry place during the winter and then after laying them hortorizon on the tomato cages tie them together gives strength from summer storms.

@@MorethanGardening I haven't tried to grow an apple tree, as there were three on my property when I bought it. What is supposed to be difficult about them? I've only planted peaches and Asian pears, which are very different from European pears, I should add! They are round, very crisp, like an apple, and extremely juicy. European pears take forever to bear fruit, but I got dozens of fruit off the Chojuro Asian pear tree I planted three years ago. Peaches are prone to disease, I do know that, so make sure you look into dormancy spraying. Asian pears are just very easy, grow fast, are productive, and the fruit is lovely, so worth trying one! The roots of legumes get colonized by rhizobium which fixes nitrogen into the roots, creating nitrogen-rich nodules. When the plant dies, the root bacteria die and leave behind bioavailable nitrogen that can be taken up by the next plant. However, this requires the root to decompose in the soil, making the nitrogen available for next year.

I’d like to find out more about the planner. Is this something that I would print off or download on the computer to use?

It downloads as an excel file. You can print it too if you want!

Do you use all of the fertilizers listed on different vegetables?
@MorethanGardening
@MorethanGardening Ай бұрын
I use them all on everything pretty much. The granular ones get mixed into the soil & the liquid ones get mixed with water and then applied during watering every couple weeks or so. I’m not super particular about what fertilizers are used on what plants unless a plant clearly needs a certain nutrient and then I address that with a specific fertilizer.

Hi just came across your channel! I’m a beginner gardener in Sacramento zone 9b. I just bought the medium birdies raised bed and was wondering if you had any tips on what I should plant this first year in the raised bed. I will probably make it a 6x3 bed. I also have about 10 grow bags 5 and 15 gallon ones that I will using as well. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. 😊

I would focus on growing what you like to eat! Tomatoes & peppers are always a solid choice. If you grow those I would add basil & cilantro so you can use the basil in pasta sauce & cilantro in fresh salsa with your peppers & tomatoes. Lettuce is also really easy and you can direct sow seeds into the soil. 5 gallon is good for lettuce/greens & 15 is good for the tomatoes & peppers! Also zucchini is super prolific and easy to grow :) I hope that helps!
