I have a question for you unrelated to this video. My son is playing in Majors for the first time. Our season started this week and in the first two games he is batting 10th of 12 and his coach is having him take 2 strikes before he is allowed to swing. I understand his intention is to increase his chances for a walk but at this point he now has 3 strike outs and 2 walks. My concern is that he is literally getting one chance to swing at a pitch each at bat and this isn't helping his confidence or giving him much of an opportunity to improve. If this continues much longer I am considering telling him to only take one strike even if it is against his coach's signal. What are your thoughts?

FunAwesome! Family my high school coach made my team do the same thing to make the pitcher work. Tell the coach he's an idiot. If you really want to improve their discipline work on things like pitch recognition and fighting off pitches on an 0-2 count.

that is just ridiculous I can understand taking the first two pitches but the first two strikes makes absolutely no sense

That happen to my son..I hate the take a pitch sign...My son took that adversity and worked hard for a year, he 2nd yr Minors 10 & under. He practiced, practiced and then followed up with some hitting lessons. Now we have another problem he gets intentional walks much of the time. What I am saying is be proactive about the situation go to another team, get lessons, and practice hard.I bieleve it is bs when a coach at that age gives a take pitch sign.I think a hitter can put the ball in play in and around the strike zone at that age. It is not your coach's job to get your son better it is yours.

That is overboard. I have a ton of stats on youth players and it's the first pitch outs that are the real back breakers for youth teams. Certainly the kids need to learn how to work a pitcher in to 4 and 5 ptich at bats, It ends up in the the favor of the batter statistically. I have more batters in youth baseball consistently hitting over 400 that get to a 4 and 5 pitch count. My 1 and 2 pitch batters all trend below 300 BA. High School and College is a different animal, but the younger kids can learn a lot with a little discipline at the plate. Waiting for two strikes is not right. If you can get to a 2 and 1 count in youth baseball, Batting Averages on On Base percentage go through the roof.

Hey coach and pt here, the third drill where he throws it backwards made me think that would also be very useful for players such and infielders or catchers who need to throw quickly to modify the drill in the following way: instead of finishing the movement by throwing behind you, you could start in the same position and accelerate to the true throwing position then stop and as quickly as you can throw the ball forward (with good mechanics). This variation will help decrease the time it takes for players to get into and out of their throwing position as well as strengthening and stabilizing the muscles involved with the throw.
