being a chemist that now starts to be interested in perfumery, the "scent and chemistry" book keeps getting recommended to me. be it for making perfumes, be it for just researching stuff with papers, i guess that book will find its way into my collection. i mean ... we chemists really are able to get a deeper understanding of any material based matter ... thats something i really like in the subject, especially as I am developng myself into more creative fields (textiles/garments, now perfumery).

For sure you should pick it up! Since they re-released it the price is finally at a normal level again so it’s a great time to snap one up

How does this man not have millions of subs…?

@wib60442 жыл бұрын
Yea it’s a niche subject. I’ve also found American KZbinrs tend to have more subs than Brits on average when it comes to this subject as a whole. I pretty much only watch the English reviewers, and it is mind boggling they have 1/5 the subs of some of the American reviewers, despite the content quality being the reverse ratio. This is not a knock on anyone, but The Fragrance Apprentice alone is more entertaining than most of the TV programming on today, let alone reviewers and somehow he is still under 50,000. Wondering if it’s an algorithm thing or not. So yea, subs not a reflection of content, and hopefully not a deterrent to keep making these!

I have recently been thinking a good chemistry book might be needed; thanks Sam. btw, Ellena's new book, the "atlas of perfumed botany" is absolutely gorgeous, and also historically informative. I would recommend it if you are into the gardening/nature side of perfumery. cheers mate.

Hey Sam! Great video! I’m reading Nose Dive, a field guide to the world smells, Harold McGee, i just started, but I could say that probably you’ll like it, also I’m a self learner of perfumery and this book is pretty interesting. The author show a table with the elements, similar smells and also the molecules. It’s a journey of the author in the world of the smells so it’s pretty interesting Greetings from Mexico :) !

Greetings to you in Mexico! Yes it’s a great book, I’ve got it on the shelf in the background of this video. I haven’t had a chance to read that much of it though.

It's a great book, very nerdy (in the best way) and well thought out. Feels almost like reading a fantasy novel, but the magic is scents and chemistry. Fun fact: after some time of hesitation I finally decided to buy it when I noticed it on Sam's shelf :D

Hi Sam! I am learning the ingredients from the list in book Perfumery practice and principles. Should I smell them pure or diluted ? 10%? In Ethanol? DPG? Thanks a lot!
@sammacer2 жыл бұрын
My advice would be to learn them diluted to 10% in ethanol, 1% too if you have the time

Leave jobs for us people who are passionate about perfumery not just nerds in lab coats. Jk good luck getting my dream job
@sammacer2 жыл бұрын
It’s very difficult to get into - if you’re doing it for salary it’s probably not for you since most perfumers start on a low salary (some master perfumers can earn exceptional amounts but that’s an exception). You should take a degree level course in perfumery to have the best chance but like any job, there will be many unique paths to get a job. Good luck!
