Something a lil different but I wanted to show you all my new rosy boa Java and update you on how Betelgeuse and Willow are doing. I thought it might be helpful to show their enclosures and go over some basic care + throw in a few feedings as well

Nice rosies! Great snakes. In the wild, these snakes occupy burrows in ground that has lots of rock structures below the surface (and above in most localities but not all.) That said, a substrate like you use, especially the big aspen chips, does give them security when they burrow in, and it retains warmth, so it works well despite the fact that you will never find a wild rosy living in wood chips. I use them too. A large-area but mostly flat hide would be great. If you notice, your rosies will pretty much squeeze between layers of solid surface to hide, like behind the foam background in contact with the foam and glass. You can make flatt-ish hides - buy "flat" cork bark pieces, or make a sheet of spray foam (aka Great Stuff) and carve a very shallow concave, or what I often use - just plain packing paper used for wrapping things when moving - lay it over the substrate. Super simple, and the rosies really like it. They want contact on as much of their body as possible. They like feeling the surface of the hide against them. Another great hide is PVC pipe unless you have really big coastal rosies that can't fit. Many localities can fit in 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inch dia PVC pipe. They like that type of hide, again because they can "feel" it all around them. I use PVC pipe in my rosy cages, plus some packing paper laid over much of the cage. They love that setup. Much more useful to the snake than a plant, piece of driftwood or large-diameter cork bark. I am not criticizing, I am just sharing my experiences for the benefit of you and the snakes. Of course, there is also - "if it aint broke don't fix it." If your rosies are thriving just the way things are, then no changes necessary. One more tip if you didn't know this already- some rosies are stubborn with frozen thawed. Warming the prey item up to around 100 deg F helps quite a bit. I learned that from ball pythons, but it seems to work with rosies too in my experience. You will notice the snakes grab the prey very quickly when the prey is warm compared to if the prey is room temp. Works with sand boas too. Not 100% necessarily, but a big improvement. (I was not sure if rosies had heat-sensing receptors, but apparently there may be, but not obvious pits like with pythons. Conflicting info out there on this subject. Boa constrictors do not have heat sensors.) Good luck with the snakes!

I adopted an albino coastal Rosy boa named Rebel Sunshine, 2 months ago, & she's awesome!! She used to strike any time I opened her enclosure, moved her to her feeding tub, changed her water, or anything else that required me being around her. She is captive bred, & did have severe mites before I got her, hence her lack of socialization. She was only handled for her medicated baths, which isn't fun for anyone. Things have been moving right along, & she's just such a beautiful animal. I'm able to handle her, & she's grown comfortable being held for short periods of time, but increasing all the time. Thank you for doing this video about your Rosy boas because I learned some things.

Let's be honest. I'm just too damn lazy to branch out into snakes. I don't need the extra expenses, either. That said, you have convinced me that a Rosy Boa would make an excellent choice. Attractive, docile and modest in size. What's not to like. I have handled a couple of corn snakes before. It was an OK experience. I don't fear or loathe snakes like some people do. I liked this video from an educational point of view. I also wonder if any of the haters changed their minds after seeing Willow. Not much to fear there, huh?

Jeffrey Golish I’m so happy you like snakes now. I only spent about $250 in total for my ball python setup. They’re easy to care for as long as you do a ton of research. If you want you could follow me on mocha_almond_the_ballpython. 💖🐍

Rosy boas are about as easy as you can get, if you kill one through poor care I would imagine a pet rock would be about the only thing for you. I'm pretty lazy myself and don't have much time or money either and also living within their natural range they do perfect with the ambient humidity, but if you're only interested in observing that's great too!

I was going to ask you to do a beetle juice update 😂 congrats on your new baby, as well! I always somehow forget about the rosy boas when I think about snakes I want to keep in the future. They’re so stinking cute. My first and only snake is a ball python, and I love her. She’s been a joy to raise. I’d definitely consider a rosy if I ever want to add a boa to my family 🐍

Willow's enclosure is way too small. That could be why she doesn't eat as much as the others. Seeing as females can reach 3 feet as adults, they should be kept in the equivalent of a 30 gallon. She could also use more enrichment, as you said she likes to explore.

So I went to feed my curly hair tarantula and I noticed there was a small web on the side of her cork log. Turns out there is a small spider living in there with her. It must be feeding off the isopods and springtails since it's a bioactive enclosure. I was just wondering, should I remove it or leave it. It's too small for my tarantula to bother and I doubt it poses any threat to her. Thoughts?

We keep a Roy Boa for 10 years. It looked and behaved just like Willow. She loved to be handled. After the kids went off to school, I wandered up to a garage sale nearby. I stuck up a conversation with a 10 year old kid who happened to mention that we wanted a snake for Christmas! I had him bring me to his mom, and offered the snake to the family. She wasn’t sure, naturally, so brought the entire kit with a lot of extra food, demonstrated proper care and handling, mom, dad and 3 kids all handled it, mom relented. Last Halloween they came by to say Rosie was still doing quite well! I feel really good about the whole thing. Definitely recommend Rosy Boas.

it's the other way around; you cats would likely kill a Rosy Boa almost instantly. Even if they don't kill them outright the infections caused by cat injuries can kill them anyway. also 20g is the minimum for these guys they should really be kept in a 40g breeder as an adult. The enclosures in this video are depressing.

My opinion is that, although similar in ways to rosies, Kenyans are even more indestructible and tolerant of a wider range of conditions. Rosies are more sensitive to conditions outside their normal range of temps and humidity.

I love Rosy boas so much! It’s too bad that there isn’t a lot of them being sold at expos. Once I’m ready to own a snake, I’ll be looking out for one! also, I’d recommend holding the mouse at the midsection instead of the tail, it makes it wiggle less and the snake can catch it easier.

A really great video. Wild Rosy boas have their own natural morphs due to locality. Being live bearing snakes makes breeding them very much more simple. I think they are way better than Ball pythons for this reason. Rosys are just more handsome snakes in my opinion. The posibilities they offer as morphs is just outstanding. Being a laterally striped snake. I am waiting for someone to develope a rosy morph that differs from this. Much like Caifornia kingsnakes which are banded come in a stripped morph. Still other Cali kings come in a blotched and sripped morph. I am waiting for this to happen with rosys. My favorite are the Morongo valley type that have very orange and blue/gray stripping. But I think the most stuning morphs are the Albino forms. The cream body and orange strpping is just spectacular. I love the snakes of the Southwest the best. Rosys, pyromelana and other Lambpropeltis, transpecos rat, Lyre snakes, and of course gopher snakes. : )

Rosy boas are my favorite snake too. I have a pair of them. Garter snakes are my number 2 favorite snake. According to a rosy boa breeder named Ken Foose rosy boas can live over 60 years with proper care. If true that's incredible. I wouldn't doubt it though because reptiles with slow metabolic rates tend to live longer. Their slow metabolism helps them survive in their harsh desert environment. They might not find food for months at a time but will make the most of it when they do. In captivity where food is available all the time they can quickly become obese though. Females tend to be much larger and usually don't have the spurs. Personally I've never seen any female rosy boa who did have cloacal spurs.

What I'm concerned about is keeping things dry enough for a rosy. Here in Helsinki the indoor moisture level is good and low at winter, but we are on the sea shore and there are occasional mists on other seasons. What would you consider to be a too wet air for a rosy? Don't wanna get the little noodle sick by just having them breathe air that's too wet after all.

I don't know if this will get a response, but I was wondering how often you should feed rosy boas? from what I heard, you're supposed to feed them once every five days for the first year of life, once every seven days for the next two years and from then on go to once every ten days. I don't know if this is true or not but I also heard that sometimes rosy boas go off feed, kinda like ball pythons? I'm kinda concerned

They kind of let you know when they are hungry - they pace in the enclosure, especially at dusk. So, you can feed them when they are hungry. Every 5 days is fine. Older adults may require less frequency (unless it is a breeding female..). They will refuse food when going into a shed - sometimes it is difficult to tell they are going into a shed cycle. Other reasons for refusal is breeding age males may refuse food during breeding season. No worries, it is fine. Pregnant females will not eat. The good thing is, they generally eat very well, so if they do refuse food sometimes, it is not a problem. I have an adult male around 12 yrs old that probably eats maybe 6 nice-sized meals a year - he only eats in early Spring and then again in Fall. And he looks fantastic, nice and plump. Young rosies will look for food often and may eat twice a week if you feed them smaller meals. The once every 5 days thing is a guideline, but not applicable to every rosy. Young eat more often, older adults eat less often, and there is everything inbetween.

I have questions about my Rosy Boa. I have been afraid of snakes for 32 years of my life. But I have found a love because if a ball python my brother has. I am giving her small mice for feeding but it doesn't seem like it's enough can I feed her to my side a Time? She's my first snake so I want to make sure I'm doing everything right for her she's 10 years old she's full grown can you help me?

Agree rosy boas are the best , ball pythons are good but can be so fussy. I'm crazy and personally think Burmese pythons are the best hehe
