He thinks by being racist against Arabs or Iranians he'd be suddenly gets the entitlement to be European or White, after all the US people did, European did - i.e. Nazis of Germany. I thought the same thing! I live in Korea and have a longterm visa so when I buy a one way ticket, they check my visa at check-in and again at the gate, and again when I arrive in Korea. I imagine there had to be others on your flight that had the same problem if they weren't checking. Crazy.

It is CRAZY that you don't know you need a visa but still able to come all the way and stay. it is INCREDIBLY hard for a Turkish person to get a US visa. And if i would somehow buy a plane ticket and went there without a visa there would be no way I'm entering. Damn privileges.

With regard to the VISA. I don't think you mentioned it but for those curious, it is very easy to get a VISA to travel to Türkiye as a US citizen. You get an eVISA online. It literally takes 5-10 minutes and costs about $50. So don't fret about that. Easily solved.

Yeah, I got an E-Visa and once you get it, they already have you in their system, so you don't even need to show anything. Just make sure you access the E-Visa link through the U.S. State Department website. If you do it through a search engine, you could end up on a scam site.

Not thinking you might need a visa for another country is definitely an american centric thing, because us third world countries people constantly worry about visas! actually, I won a government scholarship a few years ago, and they gave me the choice between Uk University and a US one, I chose the UK because even as a studen, getting a US visa is a nightmare! Literall life altering decisions depend on visas!

Years ago (not sure if it applied to American visitors) you used to just pay cash on arrival in Turkey for a visa. It was a crazy free for all 😂 then it changed to e-visa and now many countries don't need any visa for a short stay. So I can understand the wrong info being online when looked. I guess the mistake she made is relying on information from none official sources.

I'm a Bulgarian who has been learning Turkish for many years. (I began learning like 10 years ago but then I stopped and started learning Greek instead. A year and a half ago I decided to finally improve my Turkish. I'm 25 now...) Anyways. I just wanted to say that I found your reaction at the squat toilets funny. 😅 I mean I understand why you got frustrated. It looks a bit "scary" if you're not used to it. All toilets in my elementary school building were squat toilets. And I still see them/use them when I'm in a smaller village or a resort by the sea... Tbh I don't think Turkey could surprise me with anything for 2 reasons. We're neighbours and we know each other very well. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Plus some of our habits and traditions are pretty similar. Some things are more like Balkan things and not so much Turkish things. But I haven't been to Turkey. I have been listening to Turkish music, watching Turkish series and learning Turkish language for years. But you never know until you experience it by yourself I guess... Anywayyysss. Hopefully you will enjoy your time there. 🇹🇷🖤🇧🇬

Also you might be carefull with your drone as well, unlike the US in Turkey and actually most of Europe you cant just fly everywhere you like even if your drone is lightweighted. Also, you need to read more about Ataturk, because when you do, you will realize your forefathers are not comparable to Ataturk for the span of accomplishments accomplished by a single man. We don’t put him on the pedestal of respect just because he was the founder of Turkey. He literally fought off every country that was on our doorsteps (I mean even Australians were all the way from down under at our western shore) , so with his military expertise not only he fended off the countries who were attacking the remnants of Ottoman Empire, but also after founding the Turkish Republic, he made countless reforms he did from clothing to alphabet, from agriculture to economy He made the country secular which was extremely important and modern for a predominantly Muslim country. . He even gave us women’s rights way before some European countries have had their women’s rights at the time. So, again, this man has earned huge respect for more than just founding a country, but also giving it a 180 degree makeover in the best foresighted way possible. As a modern Turkish woman I owe a lot to him, and that is just facts.

yeah, this is full of shit, Turkish gov status quo has become only a de jure secular, back in the day wearing hijab and Islamic practices were banned many suffered for it but not anymore. The majority of people have never been secular, we have always been Muslim. 67% of women still wear hijab or niqab in Turkiye. There are mosques and calls to prayer in every neighborhood social media or tourist spots fool some people. Turkish people have been Muslims for 1000 years. Ataturk was a wanna-be Atlantic mandate and the British gave him the gov before leaving. We lost WW1 and most of our lands especially where containing oil were lost. The biggest condition of the Brits was the abolishment of the caliphate and secularization of the country so they chose the Ataturk. Otherwise, they would never leave Istanbul or Anatolia while they were the literal superpower at the time. Ataturk was just a mid-class army officer during wars lol he never participated in any democratic process he was a literal Western puppet, this is a common political practice of colonial powers. No secular party has ever won an election in Turkiye and we had many Western-initiated coups and economic attacks against elected governments but still, we elect Muslim parties, and a small amount of Muslim people who praise Ataturk are misguided and they think Ataturk was the savior of Islam bc of the fairytales and gov propaganda told for decades, but we are progressing every day...

He is not your typical personality cult figure like Stalin really. The amount of people who both has military and philosophical ingeniousness at the same time exists only once in 150 years. Examples of them are Prophet Muhammad, King Odysseus, Napoleon Bonaparte, Cyrus the Great, and of course, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. I think he is overlooked by Western academicians and historians and should be researched more frequently. However, he is one of the most influential figures among not only the Islamic world at the time, but also the entire continents of Asia and Africa. It influenced from Iran's Reza Pahlavi's secular reforms to the pan-Arab movement and Gaddafi's African Federation for example.

Squatty toilet is a rare thing in Turkey. It is mostly found in very old buildings. Absolutely no new construction has it. It is a mostly outdated thing in Turkey. I wanted to clarify that because I don’t want people to think that is the only type of toilet we use, because I can assure you that you will come across way more normal toilets than the squatty ones in Turkey , especially in big cities, (source: me, a middle-aged Turkish woman who knows a helluvalot about her country. 😬)

That squatty toilet is infinite times better than the commodes. Biggest reason being that it complies by the required humanistic standards of hygiene. No touching of the skin to the toilet, no water splashing on your body, no weird bowl problems, etc.

As a Turkish person, who lived in the US for 10 years, I can totally attest that the YOUTH don't know how to walk on the sidewalk or road or stairs or simply put, to walk. Every time I hit the road, I start cursing people in my head, with words I just don't want to describe here. I started tutoring my "college" students about how "to walk in a civilized and organized manner" (Go on the right side, don't occupy more than half of the road, etc.). The situation is indescribably dire. As you put it out, walking is an extremely frustrating endeavor in Turkey!

Totally agree with sidewalk situation too. About Atatürk well nothing much to say about him besides i admire and respect him 100% too.. Situation these lands are in back in those days and how he rallied people and founded this country is an amazing story. can't help but admire. Many hours of series, songs and movies, with subtitles of course, and duolingo is amazing for turkish language. I would recommend the series named Son yaz, the last summer in english, you have yt channel, its funny and very good,plus the acting is superb...not to mention the actor😂

I am not even Turkish but my heart has a love for Turkey 🇹🇷 Ataturk I have learnt a lot about him and I love the man he saved Turkey. The country is beautiful, best customer service in the world, men are gentleman I always see them stand up on a dolmush ( Turkish bus) if a woman is standing. Food wonderful, beautiful beaches, mountains, the country is beautiful steeped in history. Instabul is a facinating city I have travelled a lot around the world Turkey is one of my fav countries. It’s secular so the fact that it’s modern is great love you Turkey please don’t change 🎉

I disagree with you about the customer service. If you're a foreigner in the country it seems like everyone is out to rip you off, and some don't like dealing with the opposite sex. As for the men, some are as you described, but others are also very creepy and disrespectful. The food kind of disappointed me. I think foreign version of Turkish food is much better. Didn't go to Istanbul, but aside from that, I agree with everything you said. If it wasn't for the scammers, the country would be almost perfect. I've been to over 30 countries, and in terms of sites and geography, Turkey was by far my favorite. I liked it even better than Italy. And the culture is so unique, because yes it's a Muslim country, but the coastal areas feel very modern and Western, while the interior feels very traditional and Middle Eastern. It's rare to be able to experience so much diversity on one trip. This is one of the few countries I could see myself going back to. I just hope that some time the day will come when Turkish people feel they don't need to scam tourists.

"Middle Eart shit" Lol I feel ya😆 I remember when I first arrived here and didn't know Turkish and needed to use the toilets at a rest stop on a 10-hour bus journey. I only had 5 minutes. So, not knowing what Bay and Bayan meant, I searched for pictures. No pictures. No problem, as I am a problem solver so I stuck my head into one and saw a hole in the ground, no urinals. Confused, I checked the other one same thing. I ended up having to wait until I saw someone else use them before I knew which was which. Stress.

Türkiye applies visa to countries that apply visa to itself. if America does not ask for a visa from the Turks, Türkiye will not ask for a visa from the Americans. You need to read some history to understand the issues related to turkish nationalism and Atatürk.

Our independence may be recent but it was just against a 5 years of invasion. I live in USA 18 years now and don’t visit my country Türkiye very often. 2019 I went we were constantly visiting traveling I got a very upset stomach when I was in bus to going my husband home town. I remember that last one hour in the bus was the biggest torture and finally when we arrived terminal run to bathroom and realized I forgot how to used squats toilet 😂.

I think I would prefer the staring thing to be honest. I feel like people CARE more in that situaion. Here in Canada people just flat up ignore each other. I had a Mom casually mention that she has 3 children like me, and drop a quick comment about how I was brave to take them shopping, and I honestly would have chatted with her, but she was so afraid to inconvenience me, she was gone before I could even respond! And no she wasnt in a rush, her whole body language was like "Im not botherjng you! I'll get out of your way!" People will not speak to others here, and ignore each other or even make eye contact. I had a guy who might have been autistic or something try to talk to me, and his coworker was standing there as if he was going to come over and shoo him away and and I just stood and talked to him briefly. Why not! We all need care. I wish we werent so isolated from each other. My vhildren are the same, they will talk to anyone. And people love it! Especially the elderly folks. They are all over it.

The reason for visa application on American passport. The American government abolished visa liberalization for our country due to trivial reasons. There is reciprocity in international law. If you start a visa application for a country for funny reasons, they will apply the same to you!
