I just bought a unit about a month ago. I was not a comic book collector. There were no signs of comics in the unit but in the back hidden were ten long boxes and 6 short. I am learning about comics now. It looks like its worth over 10K, (paid 550) Now I am trying to sell a few of the mediocre ones and try to slim down the collection. No slabs but lots of ASM, Venom, Deadpool and X-men. Also there was a short box full of Skottie Variants. Now I am a comic book collector...

I noticed a copy of Gary Gygax's "Dance of Demons" from the "Gord the Rogue" series in the box of paperback novels. Gygax's early novels are still popular since they are set in the World of Greyhawk, which was the first published Dungeons & Dragons campaign world. A copy of "Dance of Demons" usually sells for $15 to $50 depending on condition.

That was amazing that you found such a huge key in that lot. My heart sunk when I first saw the water damaged boxes but it turned out great and your wife is a real trooper for going along with you. I ran upon the 1st app of Squirrel Girl (in an auction) a few years ago and was amazed such a random Seasonal issue was going for so much. A CGC 8.5 Marvel Super Heroes 8 recently sold for $180. Edit: It wasn't even CGC. The seller estimated it was an 8.5. Like you said those square bound books are hard to find in higher grades.

She is definitely a trooper, but don't be fooled, she was looking for treasure just as much as I was, LOL. I was also concerned looking at those boxes at first, but I also knew their age and condition meant that it was probably an older collection and not just a bunch of modern junk titles, etc.

I love auctions, but I've only purchased one storage unit over the years and it was to get comic books. Mine was a small one though 6 x 8 and got it all done in one truck load. That was in the early 2000s and most of the comics were 1980s and very early 90s. Mostly I stick with auctions where I can preview as I'm risk adverse on the sight unseen bidding. But if the price is right I'd do it again.

I bought a collection in June 2022 from a widow - this was her husband's collection. While going through it initially...she was so angered at him and the collection, because it had alot of NC-17 and mature audience material. Clearly, the guy did not pay attention to his family. Anyhow, it was a lot of about 1600+ books and comic ephemera from the 1960s to the 2000s...all types. Initial cost = $1450.00 I found over 300 damaged books including many keys (i.e. Eternals #1. UNCANNY X-men #411), many w/COAs and many signed.... Sold all off in lots of 20+ for 99 cents + shipping. Of all the books I kept - they roughly totaled $3500+.... With all the sales I made....total outcome was about $5300.00 total. Not bad for about a $1500 investment. 😆
@collectingcasually Жыл бұрын
Not a bad turnaround. Yeah, I have collected some of that NC-17 stuff with these collection purchases, and I just put it all together to the side. I usually let my wife take a glance so she can roll her eyes, lol. I'll have to figure out what to do with all of it once I get tired of storing it.

@Collecting Casually I meant to add....this was a total of 14 short boxes. What excited me was that the lady stated her husband bought a Conan #1 for $160.00 - so that peaked my interest a little...but after going through the lot...sadly, I never found a #1. 😞 Highest priced keys were in the $100-200 price range...but easily - I found many, but none of the majors I had hoped for...lol....

@collectingcasually8 ай бұрын
Yes, the NM 98 was for sure the highlight, but I made my money back pretty quickly selling the other items in the unit, like the kiln, molds, and tools. Those sticks in the barrel were "in-production" walking sticks and staffs. I ended up selling the whole barrel for $50 or so at a flea market.

Not a fan of praying on delinquent storage lots. There are a ton of reasons for why people let their lots go unpaid, most of them are unintentional and many a poor collector has sobbed over someone sliding in and taking their lifelong hobby away on the cheap. Most will say they're fair game but, to me, I'd rather not be the one who takes advantage 🤷🏽♂️

I appreciate your input, and I can definitely sympathize with losing a coveted collection. While I don't know the full circumstances of this unit's history, you could definitely tell that it had not been visited in quite a long time, and any indication of dates looked like the newest items in there were 5+ years old. I'm curious - what would you suggest as a solution to these storage units that go unpaid? That's not a snarky question, but a legitimate inquiry. Thanks for watching!

Sad that a Marvel fan finds so much cool DC stuff. Shame it couldn't have been found by someone who truly appreciates DC. Like meeeeee! 😆
