Something I love about EQ is the music. Most modern MMOs do not have the serenely catchy music as EQ. Ak'Anon, Kelethin, Felwithe, Neriak, Bridge of Karana. The one exception is the battle theme. It gets old faaaaassst.
@IonBlaze1
@IonBlaze1 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the music is great. I even throw in some Eq2 from time to time.
@mrdali67

Battle music always off, but the old style ambient music is so nice. Especially if you replaced standard .sf2 file with a better one. Beside that the general slower pace and downtime between puls to socialice with people is what made EQ uniqe. You hardly ever talk with others in modern mmo’s. And frankly, I prefere the old style text chatting over any modern voice chat. Every one that can read and write english is able to use text chat, but voice chat is a huge problem when english is not your native language. Not very many is easy to understand in spoken language over an often half bad quality headset.

No lie. When i heard the opening EQ music it brought some tears to my eyes, not just the game, but the friends i made playing and the all the late nights me and my little brother would stay up playing on 2 computers in same room just having the best time ever. Also the times we would have nights where our 2 best friends would bring their computers over for the weekend for the first crushbone raid on our server! 20+ years later we still talk about those days on the phone.... miss those days so much

I feel you man. My friend's dad was a programmer, and he had 3 sons. They all had their own computers, and we all played EQ together. The 5 of us had so many fun adventures, it provided my childhood with some incredibly fun and happy memories. As you get older and the world becomes a little darker, and you become more jaded, you look back to those days wishing you could experience them again for the first time. Nostalgia is a powerful drug to chase, but never seems to get the feel quite right.

Absolutely loved this video! Yes! Player interaction is a dying feature in modern games. I went back to try WOW again a couple years ago and barely ever talked to anyone. Even dungeon groups didn't speak unless it was to berate you for not already knowing the most optimal way to finish the zone. On P99 Green, I visited Splitpaw for the first time ever (never did it back in the day) and had a group that kindly helped me navigate the zone and gain lots of xp. And the number of random buffs, twinking, and conversations I've had are off the charts in comparison to other games. And of course, there's always the roleplaying Ogres.

Great video. Totaly agree, underrated by most players. Been a EQ adict for 10+ years, playing day and night, no social real life, my main charater at 2000+days playtime. (real days online, had dedicated seller Bazar char) One of few games were your reputaion means everything, as you say if play good, more people want to make groups with you, if you sux's or act like an asshole..you will get fewer group invites and be added into more players blacklists, until you wont ever find groups to join. Swap server or quit is your options. You did not log in to play a game, you logged in to play with your friends. The social thing is everything with EQ. Help out other with their quests or stuff they need, build up "favors", spend 10h+ here for your quest, that player will help you when you ask him/her to help you with your 10h+ gridning for your quest. Many things is bad in EQ, endless hours os gridning same mobs, but it felt rewarding anyway. You were not showerd in loot or rewards, so when finnaly get something it means much more. That is for myself one of biggest "problem" with newer games, you get so much items and you wear your armor for..at best few hours until you have found something new better, nothing feels special. That made EQ unqie, so hardcore..but also its downside. Spend days and weeks without getting anything, often lose platimum, just to be able to grind a day, pay some Wiz for teleport, pay for buffs not in group ect. So need to spend hours to farm money as you cant rely on getting any from a day grinding in a group. so yes I assume that sums up why most younger players never got into EQ, no make me max level with best gear in game in few hours/days..so actually had to play the game..for years/months to reach max level. EQ = anti instant gratification generation

This whole video is almost the exact conversation I had with my 14 year old daughter about why EQ was so awesome. It forced interaction and when you got a good group you didn't want to log off and end the XP gravy train. I think it took me 2 years back in the Kunark/Luclin days to get to lvl 60 as Enchanter. One of my fondest memories was going with my guild to a higher lvl zone maybe the Hole. We had 2 groups there and I was maybe lvl 47 at the time most of the rest of the folks were high 50's. Bad pull and it went bad fast. All of the casters but me and RL friend who was necro gated out. I kept the the mobs mezzed and necro fed me mana the whole time. We survived and I think only 2 died including the puller. Then we had to wait for all the rest of the casters (10 lvls higher than me) to come back with their tails between their legs. I might have a few details wrong but it was 20 years ago and I still remember the glorious feeling of saving the day.

@@IonBlaze1 That it's something much grander there, far beyond the sum of its parts. The foundation they created allows a community to build and flourish. I remember about 10 years ago an alt Shaman (my 1st favorite class at the time) was puttering around (level 50) and saw someone looking to tank in Karnors. They said they already had a shaman, and I said "trust me." So I went in. Pulled with slow, root parked adds and tanked, debuffed mobs, kept the healers safe and had a blast using all the little tips and tricks I learned over the years. Then the shaman in the group began to understand that Shamans, when played with cunning and making full use of the class tools given, was a far more nuanced class than they thought. Pretty sure that Shammy learned some new tricks. Pro tip: when faced with multiple mobs TAKE OUT THE SHAMAN MOB FIRST! (was charmed in Fire on a POP raid, and I wiped the raid).

One thing you can't find in MMO's aside from EQ1...Bards, well done bards at least. I have to be honest I am really loving your lore stories on your videos. I am not a lore guy but I love someone telling a good story! Keep up the great work!! My buddies are talking about Hardcore wow non stop, I keep telling them EQ did hardcore one life events a decade+ ago and EQ was already super punishing for failure (deaths) so wow hardcore is meh. Eq is the grandad of all mmo's and I remind people of that constantly.

What made this video fun, I forgot about shrink in places like Seb. Later zones had more room to move, but Seb rooms were so small. So we had to become small. Actually, how stupid (and smart) was it that Trakanon had a perch that couldn't even support the entire raid unless they were shrunk? Question, Locket of escape brought back with P99 or did they keep it out? Being bound to PoM as a melee class was the bee's knees. Side note, for the short time I played P99 it was nice to see Europa exists. Or odd. Thundercats meow! Wonder if Udna is still around.

That's one thing being a bard really saved you from that I hated a lot in the actual time when we played like that. Cost of a spell reagent could be the deciding factor on whether you actually use it or just eat the xp loss. Especially symbols. For a long while those kind of buffs were main tank of a difficult group or raid restricted because of how out of control reagents could become. If you fizzled, reagent wasted.

I know its an older video, but I just ran across them, and started watching them. I did end game raiding at the time, had my warrior epic. But my best story was when I looked over the edge of "The Hole" Yea I fell in and it took me nearly a week to get my corpse, a very good DK ran across the hole dragging my body, he even died a bunch of times doing it... We became friends for a long time, and I still have a list of friends I have from EQ. We raided from the start doing the two dragons, and ended in planes of power! It was all a great experience, I really wish they updated the graphics and some other things.

EQ is the social MMO. everything else after is just sigh. the only other MMO i had a great social experience with was ff11. the character that you made on EQ felt unique as in you made a name for yourself. alot of people complain about the combat uh duh of course its not anything near what todays MMOs have and honestly thats what made it great. it wasnt about toping DPS meters it was about meeting people getting together and playing which what a MMO is in the first place. taking time to wonder around and look at all the old zones and just the rush of all the old memories is a simply amazing feeling even after all these years (LOIO for life!) EQ has a place in my heart that no other MMO will ever come close to. even after making new characters you always find and make new friends to level and bullshit with. They could make the same servers over and over again and id still have a great time with EQ. Sucks they nerfed bard swarm kiting on p99 im pretty sure they capped the mobs to 25? I remember doing 38-46 in OT in some stupid time like 5 hours lol. Another thing that is so crazy on Xegony the auction zone was Gfay while like on Solusek Ro/Ayonnae it was the tunnels

The nostalgia is killing me. Played EQ in 99 through 05 as a ranger. I loved my ranger but I was always a bit jealous of those bards. I think you might have convinced me to play again. What's best server on project 99 to start a new toon?

Newest P99 server is green. But if you want to play ranger, you're better off on Yelinak tlp when it releases this month. P99 will never get to the expansions where archery becomes worth it.

When I was on my first TLP (Phinigel) I played an Ogre Warrior and had very little issues keeping aggro. Eventually, I met some Wizard who couldn't take aggro from me so I got invited to his guild and became a raid tank. I even taught a few of their tanks some things. I miss that group of people in . I had to quit by the time Planes of Power released... edit: See you around in Yelinak! edit 2: /melody 1 2 3 4 5 can keep up to 5 songs going depending on focus effects and what songs are being played automatically these days. 6 songs depending on types of songs and not worrying if 1 or 2 of them drop periodically. I might play Bard on Yelinak. There are never enough of them, or Paladins, or Rogues, or Necromancers. Ranger seems appealing to level up.

@@IonBlaze1 Pro tip: Saving provoke for aggro snaps like a Pally/SK aggro spell. As long as WarriorX got at least 1-3 taunts on the target a DPS class can still pull aggro but, saving Provoke for a push-button taunt + Provoke = back to the top of the hate list. I hope this goes without mentioning having dd/stun proc augments in both weapons for the Warrior. I think I had 2 Short Swords of Ykesha both equipped with the level ~30 and level ~40 stun augment stons. So, 2 stun augs + weapon proc, and manually managing aggro w/ taunt and Provoke for mana dump spam nuking. I held aggro really well even on raids really fast. The only other aggro swaps were by accident with our 5-7 tanks still using dd/stun-aug-equipped weapons.

Was always known as a great Warrior. I went through quite a few guilds to find that one were I felt those players were as good as or better than me and had a strong desire to be always in the top 5 in beating current content. However the saddest thing that ever happened to me, was when I was switching guilds, and shortly after, a few of my old guildmates applied and were accepted to the guild I moved to. After about a year, I had a falling out over raid times and left that guild, and one of those players I was guilded with prior sent me a tell of a frown, then said, the only reason he left the other guild to join this one, was to be in the same guild as me. It honestly brought me to tears, not because I felt proud, but because what I did had such a negative impact on him, and others. That was about 18 years, ago, and to this day when I think of it, I still get emotional.

You've done it Again Mr. Blaze! another good video explaining why EQ was so much fun, and felt so immersive. I might have convinced some of my friends to play the new TLP ! and I referred them to some of your videos to help. Yes, I'd love a new MMO, but... I'd really love to See the EVERQUEST world remade with the Newworld Engine, with some of the quality of life tweaks from the recent TLPs. (cuase bard without melody sucks). I'll never have that same nostalgic feeling that i get from EQ though, im sure... but hey, us Gamers can always hope! . by the way, is P99 green going to be your main choice from now on? hoping to see you and some others on Yelinak TLP :D

Josh Strife Hayes covered EQ in his MMO history documentary's part 5. You can imagine how much it covers in the first 4 parts before reaching EQ. I'd be surprised if he & asmongold don't know that WoW started out as a casual-friendly more-polished version of EQ. I'm somewhat interested in EQ due to how it requires player interaction, but it's hard to get into and I don't need games to be pretty. I tried looking for videos of the kind of interactions videos like yours mention, like getting a buff and tipping the other person, explaining how some fight works with all the needed roles and seeing how people interact while waiting for their HP/mana to replenish. Maybe that'll motivate me to keep trying to get into it. So far I played maybe 2 hours of the live version and half an hour of P99. P.S. altho MMOs usually support and have solo content to a much greater extent than EQ, you can't solo a dungeon/raid for your level in them, so you can't "play the entire game solo".

Thank you for coming by & the thoughtful comment. Your first paragraph is exactly why I'm trying to make these videos. I felt JSHayes glossed over the game. But he's more into runescape. Asmon doesn't like it at all. It is hard to get into. The ui & mechanics are not forgiving or clear. It makes you wait forever to get somewhere. I'm really excited for Yelinak on 5/25. It'll probably have the biggest population of any server & be a more easy way to play over P99.

@@IonBlaze1 Some of the unforgiving parts of EQ don't sound fun or necessary to me. But anyway, I might actually sub to join for Yelinak. I made my comment before watching most of the video, and then I saw you covered some of my points to an extent, for example why pullers are even needed. I don't mind runescape's graphics. Asmon's a bit more of a 'graphics w#0r3' than me.

I would say Free Port was the Auction center back in the day before ECTunnel was. Death-gating is not a term. Dumb RP'er trying to be the gatekeeper of your experience. Mine and a roommates accounts were banned on P99 earlier this year. I was in contact with Staff members about us both playing under the same roof and they made an exception to let us both play. We never shared accounts and often left our games running while we would go to the store or to let our dogs out. My roommate had left for about 20 minutes. I went to his computer to log his character out, so I moved my character to him so he could follow me, I moved him to a safer logout area and a GM appeared and Whispered - I see you have 2 accounts running at once. He then Quoted my exact E-mail from years ago I sent asking for us to be able to play under the same IP. He then said 'It doesn't look like 2 people are playing'. He is right at that one moment I was the only one playing but I was not Boxing - didn't buff myself, didn't help myself in any way. Simply tried to log off. Next response was - Your accounts are being banned. He added some LoL's and Smirk faces as If I had intentionally made an effort to break the rules to gain and advantage. I also record my play sessions every time. I sent a recording of my actions to P99 staff to prove I had done nothing but try to move my roommates character and they never responded. Had numerous raiding characters and thousands of hours - ruined by trying to do a good deed. P99 staff have zero tolerance for sharing accounts or boxing, unless it is their own accounts of course! I've reported many boxers on P99-Green running 3+ characters over the years I've been playing and they were never held responsible for their actions and continued to run around freely months after my reports that included recordings while I would invis follow them around.. We can all safely assume those are Staff members. Don't make the same mistake I did. You must be a P99 Staff member to get away with something as minute as trying to camp your friends character... (Minute as in small - Not time) Wont ever be going back to P99 - I urge other people to play TLP.

It's not just grouping. It's having to literally meet and talk to a person to trade items. It's the need to interact to port or buff or heal. It's the general chit chat that happens when you're sitting on a ferry or meditating, or getting help finding a corpse. I never met so many new friends on any other MMO since EQ classic. To me, human interaction is the core feature of a true MMO. In fact, I would go as far to say that most MMOs since aren't MMOs at all.

I agree playing P99 blue now for 9 years now I find player interaction is one of my favorite parts of the game. That said you aren't reliant on a group for certain classes like Bard, Enchanter, Necromancer, Shaman depending on the zone you are fighting in. That said Enchanters can solo most content outside of raiding content.

Yeah, by the end I was playing EQ 5 boxing. There were some really intense times in a group that I recall. Like the quad exp weekend where myself and a SK kept a group going in PoF, made more than 500 AA in 2 and a half days(Had 1500 AA going into that weekend and that put me in 5th place on the server for AA - by the end of that weekend I was second behind a 6 box warrior - forget his name). Still weird to hear people say they go to level 120. But can understand the issue, why I was multi boxing EQ at the end.

EQ was great because it was a social game, that aspect is no longer present. It's still a social game, but sadly nobody plays it much anymore, most zones are full of tumbleweeds and nothing else. Solo play in EQ is supremely lackluster yet people still do it, 6-boxing or whatever. Some of my greatest moments playing any MMO were right here in EQ some 20 years ago you just cant get that feel anymore. WOW had some of EQ's magic for a while, but it's just a bigger version of what EQ has become
