Portraits and events, I’ve switched back to DX mostly (2 D500s, and a D800 when needed). Tamron 10-24 f/3.5-4.5 Di-II VC HLD - only gripe is the aperture speed but it is forgivable. 24mm f/1.4g 35mm f/2 50mm f/1.4 Art 60mm f/2.8d Micro 85mm f/1.4d 135mm f/1.8 Art This is the kit I’ve arrived at over several years of buying and trying and selling through a ton of glass. Honorable mention to: 105mm f/2.8g VR 24-36mm f/2 Art 180mm f/2.8d All wonderful lenses but they don’t have a place in my kit, especially when primarily shooting DX now.

I'm very happy with my Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8. My go to lens is the Nikkor 24-120 mm f4. So, I have 14mm-120 in just two lenses. I sometimes need a 100-500 or 200-600, but not very often. I never shoot portraits at less than f5, so the f4 24-120 works well for all of that. The D800 has great low light dynamic range so I can bring up under exposed images. And, with the Topaz DEnoise AI, Sharpen AI, and Gigapixel I can compete favorable with newer bodies.

I shoot photojournalism, portraits, landscapes, scenic, still life, scientific/medical, macro, close-ups, sports, action events, theatre, stage events, social events, astronomy, architecture, street, vacation, and travel. If forced to reduce the two-dozen lenses in my F-mount lens inventory down to 9 lenses, here are the lenses I would choose: 14mm f/2.8 D Nikkor AF 35mm f/1.4 Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 Nikkor macro 85mm f/1.4 D Nikkor AF 105mm f/2.8 Nikkor macro 180mm f/2.8 Nikkor 500mm f/4 Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 G Nikkor AF (the only G lens on my list) 28-70mm f/2.8 D Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/2.8 D Nikkor AF I own and use F-mount lenses from 16mm to 1000mm. I prefer using prime lenses over zoom lenses. My personal favorite 3-lens prime kit is 35/85/180. My personal favorite 3-lens zoom kit is 14-24mm/28-70mm/80-200mm. I do not need or want auto focus and/or image stabilization. I prefer manual/mechanical lenses because they have fewer things that can break. I do not like G lenses because I use my F-mount lenses on film Nikons that require an aperture ring. I primarily own and use Nikon F-mount lenses. I have owned and used Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Vivitar, and Zeiss third-party F-mount lenses. The only third-party F-mount lens that I now own that came close to making my list is the Zeiss 135mm f/2 Distagon.

I recently found out a perfect trio for my Olympus OM-1 (and two OM-4) film cameras. Zuiko 24mm f2.8, Zuiko 50mm f1.4 and Zuiko 100mm f2.8. First think is that these are so light and tiny but produce awesome quality pictures with whatever film I decided to use. Plus you get to double (or to half) the focal length when changing from 24 to 50 to 100 or going backwards. 100mm is great for portraits and closeups, 50 is 50 so you can us it for everything and 24 is awesome for street and landscape. You can fit a body or two and all these three lenses to a small messenger bag and you won't break your back... and you cover pretty much everything else except some bird shooting.

That 50mm f/1.8G is such a strangely nice lens for the money. Even though I have "nicer" lenses in that range, I often come back to it, and I never leave home without it in my pocket. Also, it's just killer for sunrises.

My three favourite lenses on my D7000 are the: Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX - crazy sharp, tiny and cheap, what more could you ask for? Nikon 50mm 1.4 - in good light it's sharp wide open and has beautiful bokeh, but in worse light you need to stop down to about f2 to get super sharp images. A bit of a compromise, but I got it second hand so I don't mind. Nikon 70-200G VR - this is an amazing lens that I use so much. I even put a 1.4x teleconverter on it when I shoot wildlife roughly once a year so it's super versatile.

I'm using an APS-C Nikon 5100 camera. For me the Nikon 18-14mm F3.5-5.6 lens is wonderful. It covers most of what I want to shoot. I do have the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 lens for low light and shallow DOF when I need it. The Sigma 10-20mm F4 works great when I want the super wide angle shots. Last of all the Nikon 40mm F2.8 macro lens is great when I need to go in close.

Generally I try to be practical with my lenses, when it comes to optical performance and cost vs usage. For my Nikon D800. Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G: Optically not as good as the Fl and with rather annoying focus breathing. It is still a very good lens though. Nikkor 105mm f/1.4E ED: Probably my most used camera lens. Optically very good, with decent AF, build quality is a little bit of a let down but that is the case with most modern Nikkor prime lenses. Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Milvus Not as optically good as the Otus but unless you are pixel peeping you are not going to see much difference. It is optically better than the 105mm though. Build quality is great, having the added advantage of weather sealing, it also has the option of a clickless aperture, which makes it great for video. Of course it is manual focus which is a pain with the D800 so it doesn't get as many outings as I would like. Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 Nokton. I am not a big fan of most 50mm lenses but the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 Nokton is a lovely lens to use. I like that it has a little bit longer focal length. Optically it is good, it has good micro contrast (though not as amazing as some say), it is small and the manual focus is really nice. Tamron 35mm f/1.8 VC, I avoided the 35mm lens for ages because I wasn't a big fan of 50mm and I thought the 35mm would be more of the same. I was wrong, the Tamron 35mm f/1.8 is optically lovely, AF isn't the best but it is still a really good lens. I haven't included the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 (which I own) just because I rarely use it and it does feel fragile. Haven't included ultrawide because I rarely use ultra wides. I have the Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G VR which I bought cheap but it has stayed in my camera bag for its entire life. The 16-35mm isn't the best ultra wide, sharpness is average, build average, VR is nice but the big advantage is 77mm filter, which makes it much easier to mount regular filters.

My 70-200 f2.8 VR II is a much better lens than my newer 70-200 Fl, regarding Focusing, Sharpness, and handling/ergonomics. While the VR II is heavier in front, it is actually easier to balance as you place your hand closer to the body, accessing the Zoom Ring.

Thanks very much Matt for this show off Beautiful lenses very enthousiastically commented about! I feel You're a REAL DIE HARD PHOTOGRAPHER who loves his profession👍💎🎉 One of my best lenses is the Nikon Shift focus 105MM F 2,0. Delivers FANTASTIC results even at F2.0 with stunning bokeh and hypersharp too. The shift focus also give special soft moods in the pic's . And I love the Sigma zoom 150~500MM F 1:5~6.3 APO - optical stabilized with a pretty close focussing range of 2.0 mtr's used for wildlife shots in Dalarna Sweden with great and razorsharp photo's of a young Moose that stood for about 3 minutes in various poses before disappearing👍💎💎💎! Matt, the 180mm f2.8 is 95% of the 200mm f2 and weighs as much as an 85mm 1.4... that’s the lens I went with. I would say the results are so indistinguishable that the added cost and weight isn’t justified, plus it can be had for $500 US all day long on EBay.

@Matt Granger, thanks for great review! you should definitely reconsider the nikon 58 as your 50s focal length lens. I have seen your review on it but a day or Two usage will not do justice to it. It might not be supersharp wide open. But the overall rendering is absolute gorgeous even if the subject is a little out of focus. It's leaps above the 50 1.8 or 1.4 which I also have. I have the 105 on order so really looking forward to using it.

I used to have a Tamron adaptall 80 to 210 3.8 to 4.5 for my Pentax spotmatic back in the day when Kodachrome 20O was king. Now I love my 24mm 2.8 afd on my old Nikon D300s. 36mm equivalent and sharp as a razor. My favourite film camera is my old Nikkormat ft2 with a 50mm f1.4 ai s-c lens. Old school classic. Built like a tank. I thought the holy trinity of Nikon was the 24mm 2.8, the 50mm 1.4 and the 105 mm 2.5 prime lenses. But then I am old school. My favourite recent bargain is a Yongnuo 35mm F2 af. Looks great with the Nikon HB-47 lens hood. Great performance bargain for £70 on Aliexpress. What fun on a shoestring. Additionally extra is my extra sharp all round favourite is my old Nikon 55mm2.8 micro Nikkor.

1 Nikon 200-500 is just ridiculous for the price. The color rendition is much better than the 150-600 and AF speed alone should have it cost double. 2 Tamron 70-200 G2 is awesome. Currently own the G1, shot the 2 which is slightly faster AF but not worth the upgrade cost IMO. 3 Tamron 45mm VC is truly incredible. Shoot down to 1/15 sec with no camera shake. 4 Nikon 10.5 converted for FX 5 Nikon 105mm DC. Haven't tried the 1.4 yet though 6 Nikon 20mm f1.8G. I like the Tamron 15-30 is really good but like using the 20 for astro as well. Can also use for flower macro. 7 Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR. Love the compression and bokeh. Can use for sports and close wildlife. 8 Nikon 60mm f1.8D. This lens can be used as a walk around, macro, and portrait. Better rendition than the G version. 9 Tamron 85mm f1.8VC. The added VC is really a life saver when using the D850. The Nikon 85mm f1.8G is awesome calue but I like the Tamron a little better. Tamron 24-70 G2. If I did more event work I would continue to own it. I find I just prefer the images from standard primes (rendition and contrast) over the zooms.

John J - I agree regarding the Nikkor 200-500 because of its color rendition. It’s easily hand-holdable as well. An alternative is the 80-400 which is a bit more expensive but is not a constant aperture 5.6. Great colors as well.

i know the 50mm 1.4g is not an expensive option in this lineup, i have tried it, and my experience is that in it's price range and with it's features, it's probably the worst wide open i've ever seen from any brand so far, in terms of sharpness. it feels to me like finding acceptable image quality for the nikon F mount also means getting serious about the lens choice, i haven't found any generally affordable good choices so far.

For Canon (Ranked): Canon 135mm f/2L (Favorite portrait lens by far.) Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 These are the three I love. I also have: Canon 35mm f/2 (For when I want something lightweight instead of the 24-70.) Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM (Only really have this because it's too much of a bargain not to. Would prefer the Sigma Art f/1.4, but it just isn't worth the extra $850.) Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (Would prefer the Tamron 15-30mm, but I don't shoot wide often enough to buy it.) I would love to get some longer lenses like Canon's 300mm, or the Tamron you mentioned, but can't afford that yet :) The dream team would be to sell the bottom three lenses above and get: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 art Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II Canon 35mm f/1.4L II Tamron 15-30mm (the one you mentioned)

I have also noticed, almost all lenses, new from the factory are not auto focusing correctly. It isn't a big issue as it is possible to correct to some extend in the camera. But, it needs to be done by the customer... It seem to be a great value offered to the customer but is most likely a way to save factory cost. Worse is zooms where you got 4-5 points along the focusing distance and 4-5 focal length and all those should be checked and adjusted by using a dock for sigma and another for Tamron. If you are going to be happy with a 1.4 lens, you have to make adjustment to avoid back focusing as those are not properly managed in the factory. I also got a Tamron 15-30 which was back focusing a lot between 27-30mm. As Nikon cameras just have one value for the whole range, i sent it back for checking. The result was dramatic. The sharpness after manual adjustment at a qualified shop made a change. So, be aware of the work you have to do yourself when you get a new lens. Test it before use as the result may not be what you expected when you rely on auto-focus.

Matt - I have the Tamron 15-30 as well, and love the sharpness and build quality for my commercial use (architecture, RV interiors, etc.). I shoot APS-C (nikon D7100) . My favorites are Samyang 8mm f/3.5 fisheye (12mm f/2.8 little brother) for landscapes. best used at f/5.6-8. Tamron 10-24 f/3.5-4.5 VC HLD again for landscapes when i do not want any distortion. also you can shoot down to 1/4 sec with high keeper rate due to VC. Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 for general stuff. Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 for portraits and distant landscapes. Tamron 100-400 f/4.5-6.3 for wildlife and VERY distant landscapes. Honorable mention Nikkor 40mm f/2.8 macro. Little remark for Sigma lenses AF. My copies didn't have good focus accuracy before i sent them for calibration alongside with my camera body.

Martin Dalpé I rented both the tamron 24-70 & 70-200 G2’s and I loved them both. I used them for a small wedding and I used the 24-70 more and the image quality blew me away. But I like to shoot mostly portraits and outside sessions and I couldn’t afford to buy both so I decided to pick up the tamron 45mm f1.8 VC and the tamron 70-200 G2 and I have been completely satisfied with the results. I think tamron is killing it with the new g2’s and I always said if it’s not a Nikon it’s not as good. Boy was I wrong. My clients love the quality.

I used to have a Nikkor 70mm-210mm, f/4-f5.6D,. Using 35mm film in a Nikon 601AF body, it was a slow, sluggish, soft and, frankly, shit lens. I couldn't afford anything else; but it made me absolutely DETERMINED to NEVER buy crap lenses again. Now, I don't have much money, but I bought a Pentax Asahi Takumar 50mm f/1.4. It's significantly sharper than ANY other lens I've ever owned or even tried or seen the results from online. Ok, so it's manual focus and it's ~40yrs old, but the sharpness of it FAR outweighs the negative aspects of it. Takumar 50mm f1.4 for the win!

Own and used Nikon 50 1.8 G for some time, but didn't like the bokeh of it, so started using it less and less. Bought the Sigma 50 1.4 Art, and use it all the time. Yes, 4½ times more heavy, but it's just such an amazing lens, both for sharpness and bokeh, so it's well worth it! I'm considering adding Sigma 135 f/1.8, as I can't afford the Nikkor 200 f/2 (which would be my dream lens, I guess) now that the 135 is down at around the equivalent of 1250 USD...

I used to use the 85mm and 24mm 1.4 samyangs on crop(D5100), now having bought a used D600, I don't really like those focal lenghts, thus I want to switch to Sigma 135mm and 35mm ART, but I'm not sure about the weight and as I've experienced 135mm is a bit long indoors so might want to keep 85mm, on the other hand I might want to go with Sony's mirrorless and some smaller/slower and lighter vintage lenses, like the Leica 90mm f4 collapsible thing, Zeiss Mirotar 500mm f/8 for telephoto landscapes, Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 or 2.5 mm and then one of their UWA's, 10mm Heliar is great and all but might want to go with one of the older smaller 12 or 15mm ones can't remember exact one but one was like a pancake, the trade-off was field curvature and then again they are a bit slow for stars.-. so 4 lenses, might want to add a macro/macro-ish lens like the Voigt 65mm...

Matt, what are your thoughts on buying FX lenses for DX cameras? Will they improve image quality being that they are throwing a larger circle of light at the smaller sensor? I’m currently getting great results with the 50mm 1.8 G, and I use an old D5000. Just curious, I actually saved up for a D850. But thinking about a D500 as a backup and sports camera being that its a faster shutter speed. Also has good low light. The only lens I currently own is the 50mm 1.8 G. I use it for pretty much everything. Next I want the 85mm then the 105mm. Now thinking about adding the 200mm some day. Something about primes! But I should probably invest in a 24-70mm and a 70-200mm first maybe even a 14-24mm but I’m not sure lol. I do landscape and street right now (actually thinking about going with a Fuji X-Pro 2 system for street and photo journalism applications). Want to get more into portraiture. Also thinking about architectural and real estate photography for versatility and job security (and basically to find job period lol).

Matthew G. Garcia wow you cover lots of options here 😂 For what it’s worth FX lenses are perfect on DX bodies, in fact they perform better than on FX bodies because you get no corner issues as you are only using the best part of the lens, it’s centre.

I really like your videos and appreciate your knowledge. You don't seem to favour an in-between lens, which can be popular. It seems Nikon doesn't think much of it either. I mean the range of 35-42mm, which is my favourite. I like very compact lenses and enjoy the simplicity of not having a zoom always on my camera. (I shoot Nikon D7100 and various Fujis.)

Simon Trezise: There are plenty of 35mm and 50mm lenses available from all manufacturers so I don't think a 40(ish)mm lens would sell. Most of the time I use a 17-55mm lens and a 70-200mm lens, both Nikon brand, which covers most subjects (for me, at least).

My favourite nine lenses: 1) Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM Art - a Phantastique Lens! Colour rendition, contrast, sharpness, bokeh, autofocus - everything just superb! (As Tony Curtis once expressed it: "In two words: Su Poib"). Expensive too! 2) Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art - Just as wonderful, except that the zoom range is too limited. 3) Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary - allegedly not as good as the Tamron G2, but only half the price. And it's still very, very good! (If you buy one, don't forget to buy the dock - it's a must for this lens!) 4) Canon (Sorry, no offence too the Nikon fans) Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM - Autofocus is super silent, super accurate and super fast, and it's sharp too! And compact, lightweight and inexpensive! Only one drawback: The aperture's not impressive. 5) Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM - same advantages as the above. 6) Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM - in my opinion a HUGE upgrade compared to all previous Canon 50 mm lenses! Firstly, unlike all previous models, it's sharp wide open! Secondly the AF is better. Thirdly it can focus considerably closer! (Not bad for butterflies! My current avatar is photographed with it - you can see the full image on fb). 7) Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro IS STM - the one with the inbuilt ringlight. 8) Venus Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide Angle 1:1 Macro - I love this lens despite the fact that it's fully manual (something I'm very inexperienced with) At last a true macro lens with great depth-of-field! It also has a shift function which is nice. Unfortunately it only lets you correct vertical lines in landscape mode, which is a shame. 9) And then I feel I should really mention the lens that I use the most: The kit lens! Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - arguably not the greatest lens in the world, but extremely useful. And of course it has that silent killer-AF! Honorable mentions to Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro USM, which I own, and the extremely expensive Sigma 135mm F1.8 DG HSM Art, which sadly I do not own.
