"To be African american is to be African without memory and to be american without privilege" Powerful and profound. Do you know the source of this quote?

In the 1400s it was documented that the so called "blacks" residing in West Africa were Hebrews. They were eventually sold by their Hamite brothers (Africans) into the hands of the Spaniards, Portuguese, and later the British/British Colonists. The slaves had Hebrew names with the word Yah in their names.

Welcome to the family. The Tikar people have a fascinating history and culture. They were one of the largest kingdoms on the continent prior to colonization. The only reason they were colonized is b/c they were fighting multiple wars at one time. The Tikar is a tight knit community. There is semi-annual homecoming for the descendants of the Tikar people. I had the pleasure of opening my African Ancestry DNA results with my siblings and my 88-year-old mom on Mother's Day! My maternal grandparents immigrated to the USA from the Caribbean from a small island called Nevis in the early 1900s. Our results told me a lot about how our ancestors were enslaved ALL over the Western Hemisphere! (Drumroll...LOL) Well, my brother, I share maternal genetic ancestry with the Bubi people living in Bioko Island (right off the coast of the Cameroon,) and the Tikar, Hausa, and Fulani people living in the CAMEROON!! Wow! It really does give us a different perspective, like filling in a blank that some don't even recognize they have..... Not to diminish the relevance of an MtDNA ancestor, but keep in mind that this is one line that happens to always pass down through the female of the couple each generation. So in other words, you could have one line that came down from Cameroon, but still be 98% from another part of Africa. It's probably not that lopsided, but I just use that example to illustrate a point. It's an interesting fact because it provides a pretty definitive link to a certain tribe/region, but doesn't mean your mostly from Cameroon. Only autosomal DNA will help break it down further and of course that's an inexact science and results are continually updated as the database of DNA samples increases. MtDNA is more exact, but only tells a small piece of the whole story.

No matter how many times I see black people reading their results it’s always profoundly touching, people that are not black living in America it is something you just would not understand.

i'm proud that some african americans are reclaiming their past. i'm descended from fairly recent immigrants, my dad is yoruba and my mother is mandinka. but, we're patrillineal therefore...i'm yoruba. i'm of nigerian paternity 🇳🇬 ghanaian maternity 🇬🇭 and some amazigh (berber) 🇲🇦 background, but...born and raised in america. 🇺🇸

You may only be a small percentage Cameroonian, actually. The issue with that test is it only looks at a small segment of the DNA you've inherited from your mother's mother's mother's mother's mother, and so on. It doesn't look at the rest of your ancestry. So you may be majority Senegalese, but one of your female ancestors was from Cameroon.

@kailam.31635 жыл бұрын
it should still work. There have been African Americans taking the test and we have some European ancestry

It works as long as you don't have a non-African female ancestor. In my case, my grandmother is Jewish, so it's not happening for me.

Turns out we're only a DNA swab from being connected back to each other. I'm Mixed 💜 My mum is from Chile of French, Italian, Spanish and apparently some native descent and my dad is from Imo State, Nigeria 🇳🇬.
